WSAW335 Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Greetings, New to GMRS and am trying to access repeater Atlantic City 675. I have entered the frequency 462.675 MHz, channel number 28. I have the tones (in and out) set at 141.3 Hz. Two tones are available ( 141.3 Hz & 146.2 Hz) I have tried them both. Owner say repeater is an "open repeater". Still can't seem to connect. What am i doing wrong??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, WSAW 335 Quote

What kind of radio? Are you outside where your signal isn't trapped in a building or a vehicle? Are there buildings, trees or other obstructions blocking you from the repeater? Quote
WSAW335 Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 I'm approximately 2.5 miles away from repeater. Radio is a Baofeng UV-5R GMRS. I'm outside with no obstructions. Quote
GreggInFL Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 You need to transmit to the repeater on 467.675. Setting your radio to 462.675 allows you to receive from the repeater. All repeaters have an input frequency and an output frequency. Also, it looks like 146.2 is the tone you want. amaff 1 Quote

For clarity, on the UV-5R-family, you need to set a +5.00 Mhz offset. On the radio, you'll set the direction (I think is the option) to "+", and the offset to 5.000 That way you're listening on the 462.xxx, but the radio will transmit on 467.xxx Quote
WSAW335 Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Thanks, will give the +5.00 Mhz offset a try. Quote
WSAW335 Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Just checked my CHIRP settings and the +5.00 Mhz offset is already set on radio. Quote
amaff Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 I'm guessing you mean for that channel on the radio. In that case, it SHOULD work. There's always a chance the repeater is offline for some reason. In which case, it wouldn't matter what you put in the radio. Can you hear traffic on 675? And do you still hear that traffic with the tone enabled? (IE: repeater channel 20 and simplex channel 20 are the same receive frequency, so on an open (no tones) channel, you can potentially hear simplex traffic even if you're on a 'repeater' channel) Quote

What happens after you push the PTT button? Does the light go green and you hear a hissing sound? If so you are connecting to the repeater. Repeaters must identify periodically. Most use morse code every 15 minutes or so. If you are monitoring 462.675 and hear nothing the repeater may be down. Quote
WSAW335 Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Yes, the light goes green and I hear a hissing sound after I push the PTT button. With that being said, I thought I was hitting the repeater, but being new to GMRS I wasn't sure. Thanks for the clarification. Quote

Others are not obligated to respond to your transmission, so the only thing you may get back is that hissing sound -- especially if you are the only one on the channel. Next time try something like, "WSAW335, radio check please." If anyone is listening there is a good chance they will respond. BTW, pushing PTT without saying anything is called "kerchunking"* and is considered bad form. Don't worry, it's happened to the best of us. * https://www.amateurradio.com/proper-kerchunking/ WRUU653 and SteveShannon 2 Quote
WSAW335 Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Thanks for all the reply's. When I do try to hit the repeater I always ask for a radio check, no "kerchunking" I'll keep trying, maybe there's just not much traffic on it. Thanks again. Quote

Radio checks are what you ask your wife for when you want yet another radio. WRUU653 1 Quote
nokones Posted June 1 Report Posted June 1 Not all 675 repeaters uses the National Travel Tone. Some use other tones i.e. the Atlantic City 675 repeater uses 146.2 Hz in/out. Quote

I've tried both. Quote

It uses the same tone for tx and rx. Quote
WRXB678 Posted November 3 Report Posted November 3 So, what is the final answer for the tones on this Atlantic City repeater 20?I l live in Mt Top PA, but I'm trying to setup an HT for my mom, who lives in Villas NJ, roughly 15 min from N Cape May.
