Trying to raise a copy on the repeater but not getting through. What am I doing wrong?

Question

Hi Folks,

I am completely new to this game and I am trying to get into the conversation on the krell 675 repeater.

I am using a Radioddity GD-88 handset with a small rubber ducky antenna. I have set the radio to receive on 462.675 MHz and I can hear some conversations loud and clear. However, when I transmit I get no response. I am assuming that nobody can hear me for some reason. I live out in Nine Mile Falls and am working on the top floor of my house.  I have 2 questions;

1. When I transmit should I be sending on 467.675 MHz. When I key the PTT switch I hear a brief burst of static on the receive frequency but nothing else.

2. Is the reason that no one can hear me related to the antenna? I have a 15in one ordered and it should be here tomorrow so I can try then.

I have the radio set to transmit on high power (theoretically 7-8W, actually probably 5). I have the CTCSS tone set to 77.0Hz for both receive and transmit. Any suggestions on how I can test to see if it is the antenna or some mistake I made in the settings?

I would be grateful for any advice you can offer. Can't wait to talk to you all.

Thanks,

Pete (WSDZ496)

How far away is the repeater and do you have line of sight.    An ht has a range any where from 1/2 a mile to more than 40+miles.  It’s all in the line of sight.    I’d say drive closer to the repeater until you get through.

also like already asked is your ham radio open to gmrs frequencies? Some are some are not.  Some have a way to unlock them some do not.  I’m not familiar with that exact radio.  I’ve never spent any where near the $175 price tag on any radio not even a 50w Motorola so I have no clue if it can or is unlocked.

For repeaters you transmit on the 467 channels and listen on the 462 channels. That's the 5MHz split or shift.

The antenna is key for all issues. It's not always the length of the antenna as it is the tuning and height above ground. Your easiest antenna fix is to invest in either an antenna you can put outside, as high as possible, or one in your attic. Another option is to buy a mag mount antenna you can use in your vehicle or put it on a cookie sheet or large pizza pan. Again, this needs to be as high as possible but accessible if you also use it for the vehicle.

The krell 675 repeater has a tone of 77 hz.  Make sure your ctcss is on and set to that tone.   You should have no issues getting into that repeater from that location.   If you're still having issues,  I'd try asking on their Facebook page.   Search for Inland Empire GMRS operators.
