Lscott
We have a new employee in my department at work. He is a Canadian citizen and commutes daily between Windsor Ontario and Detroit Michigan area but lives in Canada. At some point he wants to get his Canadian Ham license. I suggested for the moment he could get a US GMRS license. The Canadian "GMRS" service is more like our FRS service in the US, with frequencies, power limits and no license requirements. From my reading of the FCC rules so long as he's 18 years old or more, has a social security number and not a representative of a foreign government he can apply for and get a FCC GMRS license. Is my reading correct? If so is anyone here a non US citizen and obtained a GMRS license?
Socalgmrs
I’m pretty sure that’s a no. But I could be wrong. As of 2021 you did have to be 18 and a citizen but may have changed. The application used to have a yes/no question asking about citizenship. You do for sure have to have a us mailing address.
WSEL489
A Foreign National can get an FRN Number, FCC CORES account, and a GMRS License. They may not be a representative of their Government, and must be at least 18 years old. Unfortunately, when I tried to look up any Canadian GMRS licenses I was unable to do so because only USA addresses are supported by the license search utility. kc9pke
47 USC 310(a) establishes no foreign government or representative of such may hold any FCC license 47 USC 310(b) only says common carrier licensees are subject to foreign ownership restrictions GMRS is a non-common carrier service, so long as he isn't a governmental rep somewhere else he's fine holding a license, but ULS will not accept an international address - if he can't accept mail here but has someone willing to accept on his behalf stateside he can use that person's address WRUU653 and SteveShannon
