I've just jumped back in myself after 20 years. I was a part time truck driver back then and always had a radio when I drove. I've never been a real technical person. I went big and installed a Radioddity Qt80 in my Ram and a Radioddity QT40 in my TJR. Learning as I go.

I got the Radioddity CB-27 Pro. I hear cb is dead but it looked fun to play with and it says it’s a Pro!

It seems to be a regional thing. Some people claim it's dead but around the greater Houston area, it's alive and well.

I occasionally will tune my HF rig to the CB channels to just listen. I hear guys from Puerto Rico blazing on channel 9 and I heard one guy broadcasting political stuff on channel 19 non stop lately. I hear plenty of people using AM, USB and LSB but not much heard on FM here in mid Missouri. 

I could buy a CB or just open up on of my HF rigs if I really wanted to talk on CB.

I just drove our little mountain and parked at about 5,600ft elevation trying to make a contact on LSB,USB, and AM. No luck today. I was in my truck using the QT80. Saturday I'm doing a charity ride event in my jeep and I hope I will have the opportunity to test the QT40 while driving the route the coordinators picked out.

I can see that. Makes sense. I occasionally see trucks with the long antenna. My cb brothers lol.

I’m still learning about ranges. It’d seem to me the higher the elevation the more you’d pick up? Kind of the idea of why towers are put on high elevations and taller antennas get better reception?

I'm not a specialist in any stretch of the imagination. But yeah, height is might as in gmrs. I heard a lot of people from around the states and Canada. Not sure why, I just wasn't able to make a contact. I think my radio was running about 45 watts or so

I’m sure some days are better than others… atmospheric conditions and such. And I guess if you’re out of range then you’re out of range.

I spent 20+ years on CB, hehe. I kind of miss it.

The only thing I do not miss is cab drivers and truckers with dirty radios talking between frequencies on sideband and splashing everything 6 channels up and down the dial. I used to get in my car and fox hunt them. Then I would sit close by and key up with a 500W linear. They used to get quiet after that for some reason.

I do miss the skip on CB (dx) as well. Farthest I have ever contacted someone on CB was Australia during the summer of 1996. Sat in my driveway on the mobile rig for that one. It was tough because EVERYONE was trying to contact this guy... but I lived on a hill overlooking Boston Harbor, heh. My base antenna was also almost 130 feet above sea level and it could see everything around it. Used to talk straight to Concord, NH from that base on stock wattage with my Cobra 142 GTL on the daily.

I had 2 mobile units: Cobra 29 LTD and the President HR2510 with the chipswitch... but that wasn't truly a CB radio, per se. Heh.

Agreed. I say have a lot of fun with it. Lots of stuff you can do with CB. I do not recommend getting a heater, though. That was probably bad on my part even though my radios were all verifiably clean on tx!

I thought I could use it for a multifunctional tool.. I could possibly hear about wrecks or construction or other issues so I could reroute. Hopefully come across good folks and have some good conversations. 
 

Biggest concern right now is routing the antenna wire in a functional area where I don’t have to make any modifications…

I think routing cable was easier in older cars. Pull up the floor trim and run it along under there and into the trunk to my Wilson 1000 since I was not a K40 fan.

So far, at 10 inches long, it’s conveniently located on my dashboard. But it works!

I just picked up a "New old stock" Uniden Pro510XL about a month ago. Haven't had a CB in 30 years (it's what got me into Ham radio actually) but its installed in my Jeep JK now and I'm having a ball listening to all the skip just like old times!
