  1. Past hour
  2. how many stop-signs have you rolled through in the last month how how many times have you exceeded the speed limited by more than 1/2 mph?
  3. People would be stupid to admit to anything in a public forum.
  4. Real certified MURS radios are a bit hard to find. However there are plenty of old Part 90 radios that can be made to "work", depending on one's definition, with the right programming. The main issue is the power level. For HT's it's usually 1 watt on low and 5 watts on high. MURS allows only 2 watts ERP. I started this thread some years back asking the question. Interesting answers I got were old Part 90 radios programmed to meet frequency, bandwidth and power spec's were OK if the radios were certified BEFORE MURS was created. I'll bet a fair number of people are using old Part 90 radios, same with MARS/CAP mod'ed Ham gear, at 5 watts. Might find the occasional "mobile" at 50 watts. Oops, people don't really do that do they?
  5. What else do y'all cheat on besides GMRS?
  6. You would have a much better chance getting hit by lightning twice standing at the same place than the FCC knocking on your door with a GMRS violation.. And as Steve Shannon pointed out, there is no organized monitoring VM's for GMRS and i woiuld say there never will.

  8. Do we know anyone local that can take a look at Midland MTX275 that is having what I believe to be mic issues. I cant Justify buying a new mic for $100 when a new unit cost $160. (Edit) I see an ad on here for a replacement mic for $50. Haha
  9. It's just another open source firmware project. The OpenGD77 firmware is not officially supported on the DM-32 per this link. https://www.opengd77.com/archive/viewforum976e.html?f=27& https://www.opengd77.com/archive/viewtopic08de.html?f=27&t=4841& https://www.facebook.com/groups/808920029174333/posts/9172085989524320/?_rdr
  10. OpenGD currently works with a very small handfull off DM radios...the DM-32 is a new DM radio.. I've scoped out OpenGD but there dosen't seem to be much enthusiasm with it.... The DM 32 has a pretty decent CPM, (free download, check it out) and will cover my needs. This radio will not have anything I would desire to change initially but after i play with it i may find some things i woiuld want to change. Also, keep in mind, Baofeng has already had two firmware updates for this radio, so i think they intend to perfect the CPM further.. This radio also has a ton of flexibly on front panel programing, more than what you would get with OpenGD.. The way i evualate OpenGD, it's helping 'some' very limited radios, but wont do anything above and beyond what the DM32 offers..
  11. @WSJF722Geewhizpat welcome to Mygmrs. Good luck with the ham license. I can recommend HamStudy and their app for preparing for the test.
  12. More like less than 0.0000000001% chance - and its not a belief, its a fact that anyone can look up on the FCC website, which lists every enforcement the FCC has done for the last ~15 years. NO - It does not appear that the FCC monitors GMRS YES - Disgruntled and very "sad" hams do report violators to the FCC, but the FCC does not appear to care based on the record of enforcements PROBABLY a lot of clubs monitoring, but see the points above because it doesn't matter
  13. What I gather from some posters of this forum is they believe there is less than a 1% chance of any GMRS operator to be charged with an FCC violation. If so, who would be the ones to find those violators? Does FCC monitor GMRS? Do disgruntle HAM operators report GMRS violators to FCC? Are there any other monitoring programs beside the VM? Just asking for a friend.

  15. The lower wattage for handhelds was usually 5 watts at VHF and 4 watts at UHF and 3 watts for 700/800mhz. It is a RF exposure limit. Many public safety officials use a remote speaker/mic where the handheld/portable is still worn on the side of the body while transmitting. Anything more is considered "harmful exposure". You should stay about 3 feet away from a transmitting mobile radio with a mounted antenna, as most mobiles transmit at 15-50 watts, plus the antenna gain, if any.
  16. That's a deal-breaker for me. I ordered one (a Retevis IIRC) a while back that did have the ability to set codes, but it was limited to 5 channels, so I sent it back. I want to have a set of channels "wide open" and at least one other set with tones.
  17. I am not sure why you are linking me there. I don’t see the DM-32 included in that project either.

    My radio nerd gear

As I build my radio station, mobile and base, I will post the gear. Got my first “BooFang” HAM first…now I am searching for GMRS handset…Wouxun anyone?…had a purchase the Chameleon Yagi…
  19. I set all my radios up with the 5 MURS channels in case I need to use them.
  20. There are a few different things that might be happening. You might have a bad mount, bad (either damaged or just lossy) coax, and bad antennas. The fact that you get the same SWR reading without the antenna might point to the mount and the cable. With no antenna the SWR should be much higher than 2.5:1, but a lossy cable guarantees a lower SWR reading than actually exists. Are there any frequencies where you see a low SWR or does the SWR never change? Does a multimeter indicate problems with either the mount or cable? There should never be continuity between the shield and the center conductor but both the shield and center conductor should be continuous from end to end. Providing model numbers and cable type could help us understand what you have.

  22. What Midland Antenna are you using? Model? And where are you mounting the Antenna?
  23. Just curious: why is the DM-32 preferable to the $50 DM-1701, which can be flashed to OpenGD77 firmware?
  24. Welcome!
  25. Hello…a newbie here…former Marine Band VHF Channel 16 Commercial Fishing Vessel owner…first responder, scanner tracker for wildfires in SF Bay Area…Early warning, evac orders during 2015 Valley Fire, Tubbs Fire, Kincaid Fire and so on through 2018…pre Watch Duty app…with early HAM reporting and, scanner monitoring, twitter fire group reporting on VLATs from McClellan….etc With wildfires increasing in danger, I work with wildfire mitigation advisors, I am GMRS licensed now…will be taking HAM licensing test soon, assessing equipment buys, will be joining the local GMRS wildfire and emergency network that is already established since the wildfires almost a decade ago. Doing radio as data towers tend to shut down with loss of power…I have solar battery back up. i appreciate the help and info I have already received from others here and from recommended radio stores
  26. Mine was all numbers - 793-8--------
  27. I assumed that kind of setup (microwave or otherwise) was on a dedicated portion of the spectrum, outside GMRS, but I guess that does not have to be the case. Have I ever mentioned that this is a great forum?
