  2. Yah, that's @H8SPVMT's fault....
  3. For some reason, it was highlighted as a recent thread. Probably just to make me look foolish. Let he who has never replied to an old thread cast the first aspersion.
  4. Nice, I like that for testing. I'd suggest borrowing one of your friends' GMR2+s for an afternoon so you're not trying to troubleshoot this on the trail. I'd be shocked if the KG1000 doesn't have a tone scan function. Worst case you can use that to figure out what's actually going on.
  5. Some updates removed the old CTC line. Recreated CTC line and added DCS line just in case. I was able to upload it to the radio. And can now transmit. No more "I can't do that" tone I have a Talkpod A36plus that I also programmed with these to lines. I have tested both channel settings. Can transmit/receive on each side. Now just to meet up with some friends that have a Rugged Radios GMR2-PLUS and find out what its using. Thanks for everyone's help.
  6. You're a bit late to this party:
  7. It's not really too complicated. FRS radios and unlicensed users are restricted to 2 watts on channels 1-7, 0.5 watts on channels 8-14, and back up to 2 watts on channels 15-22. FRS radios and unlicensed users are restricted to narrow (12.5 kHz) bandwidth on all channels. GMRS licensed users are allowed 5 watts and wide (20 kHz) bandwidth on channels 1-7, 0.5 watts and narrow bandwidth on channels 8-14 (the same as FRS users), and up to 50 watts and wide bandwidth on channels 15-22 and repeater input frequencies. It's noteworthy that most GMRS or ham radios won't go as low as 0.5 watts, and it's common for the manufacturers of GMRS radios to just leave out channels 8-14. They may or may not renumber the channels. With regard to communicating with your family, you're all allowed to use the same GMRS license, which makes it fairly simple. Use GMRS radios and stay off channels 8-14. Most GMRS handheld radios aren't capable of more than 5 watts anyway, but if yours are, dial it down to 5w on 1-7. Licensed GMRS users with GMRS radios are allowed to communicate with FRS users, and the rules for you remain the same. You don't have to go down to 2 watts or narrow bandwidth on 1-7 and 15-22, but the requirements for identifying yourself by your call sign remain the same. Presumably, if your GMRS radio is capable of 0.5 watt and narrow bandwidth, you could talk to FRS users on those channels, but I wouldn't bother. Some GMRS radios (IIRC) include 8-14 as "receive only" channels, and that's probably useful sometimes. Hand out 5 watt HTs programmed for channels 1-7 and 15-22 to your family and have at it. More than 5 watts is pretty much pointless in an HT anyway, given the limitations of the antenna.
  8. Thanks to WSGH297, WSBM443, WRXS569, (and me, WSDV406) for jumping on the net tonight at the new location of Brentwood 462.600, tone 123.0. See yall next Wednesday at 8pm. Don't be shy. Just key up, check in, and connect with other folks that can hear you. We might need each other one day.
  9. i lost a Windows 10 motherboard two years ago doing a BiOS (firmware) update.. In the middle of the update, my wife's office heater flipped the breaker. It killed the MB. Because i had lots of software (Auto Cad, Solidworks, Cura etc. i got desperate and contacted Asus. At almost the cost of buying a new MB they were able to recover it by replaceing some EPROMS.
  10. You think "some people" would just start a new discussion, in this case, I guess "some people" won't.
  11. Only "some people" would resurrect a 7 year old dead thread.
  12. walkietalkiesoftware.com should have a link to download the "programming tools" for your radio which contains the firmware and upgrade tool, programming software, and he manual. That's probably "the software" they're talking about. But the download for the H3 Plus (both GMRS and ham) are getting flagged by the Windows virus scanner as having a trojan so I'm not going to go poking around in there. (The non-plus H3 download didn't get picked up by the scanner.) Like @OffRoaderX, it's probably not worth it. They don't publish release notes but I saw somewhere the last H3 (non-plus) firmware fixed something with the airband frequencies that I never use. Looks like the H3 Plus 1.0.29 firmware might be the latest, which lets you edit channel names from the radio and fixed the VFO scan mode to loop correctly. I doubt you'd use VFO Scan mode on a GMRS radio and editing channel names is a nice to have, but not a critical update.

  14. Who knows, maybe. I Jeep Rallys maybe. We usually don't call signs during our introductions nor during our conversations deep in the woods. We are "some people"!
  15. I was responding to the comment that there were no USB-C charging UV-5r batteries. Clearly there are and I provided an example. I bought some of these 3800 mAh batteries. They aren't as long as the ones you linked, which I like because it makes it easier to carry the radio in a pocket.
  16. Good point Offroaderx. No critical issues. Always assumed there is a reason for an update.
  17. The crime rate in Avondale, AZ. depends on where you're at. Avondale Proper is miles from where I'm at and is a depressed area. The area where I'm at is Middle/Upper Middle Class and crime is very low here.
  18. Good luck in trying to modify the -2 radio to operate below the T-Band. It will be virtually impossible to find a buyer that can legally operate in the T-Band on a conventional channel. The T-Band can only be operated legally in 13 metropolitan regions throughout the country.
  19. No, I don't know that name. The class has essentially gone away. I guess it was too expensive for most of the drivers and now they are running Miatas now.
  20. Do you notice any functional difference in tx or rx ability on a radio you've "forced" vs. one that's native to that frequency range? Might be fun to try that out between my 880-1 and this 880-2, if it'll let me program it that way.

Can not register on the Forum

I had the very same issue today. Had to post a question as a guest as it would not let me set up a forum account with my call sign. (I quit using VPN on my laptop because I kept having to re-enter login info due to the changes in my ISP address.)
  22. Is there any specific reason you want to update the firmware? ie; is there some critical issue that is fixed with this update? ..I ask because often (usually) the risk of updating is not worth the reward of updating and us radio experts generally will only apply an update if it fixes a serious/major/real issue that is impacting our radio-lifestyle. TL;dr: you probably dont need to apply the update and should not waste any time trying
  23. I have been unable to update the firmware on my new Tidradio TD H-3 Plus GMRS. I have tried both the ODMaster website (web.odmaster.net) and the Tidradio website (walkietalkies.software.com) using both the USB-C cable and a Kenwood style two-prong communication cable. The OD Master site shows to download the firmware with the two-prong cable but gets stuck initializing the radio. The Tidradio site does nothing with either cable. The OD Master techies are apparently looking into this and suggested I "use the software" to update the firmware but did not indicate which software. Any suggestions?
  24. I want to thank all of you for you help. I fiddle with my cable bit and tried the Radioddity UV-5G setting and it worked. WSJF239
  25. I'm running a MacBook Air (2017) with Catalina v. 10.15.7. I haven't been able to update in in years. this is the version of CHIRP I'm using
