  2. Not sure what that graphic means but possibly seeing an aurora in La (as reported by the local “news”) almost seems like it’s a big deal. Guess I’ll see what’s left in the morning.
  3. I have never seen nor even heard of a GMRS repeater setup like this.. where can i find the listings for these thousands of other GMRS repeaters set up this way?
  4. I am confused (nothing new). MYGMRS.com lists a really great repeater near me. I listened to it with my ham radio. Bought the license ordered a pair of radios for GMRS. Now I am listening to the repeater with a 30 cm (462.700 which is channel 21) ham radio until the GMRS radios arrive. Put in the CTCSS codes even the offset though I never transmitted. So I receive the GMRS radios. One is for my mom 77 years old (dad died) she is alone in a rural area that gets patchy cell signal, not always there. Because the repeater is set up on a non dedicated repeater frequency (which is legal on the 50 watt non dedicated channels). You can not set the offset and still be able to transmit on non dedicated repeater channels, you can only listen (offset is preset in the dedicated repeater channels). My point being to contact\Use this repeater (and thousands of others) you have to use a NON FCC\GMRS compliant radio. Which is expressly against the rules. Am I understanding this correctly? Do you know what it would be like to teach a 77 year old to used a UV-5R (bump the vfo button she would never get back to the channels)? The GMRS she can just click through channels.

Hi Wayoverthere, I appreciate the help. The other sites do not provide information on the tone for the repeater and they do not show any repeaters close to South Bay in San Diego. ill keep looking. thank you Leo
  6. Yes they come around every 20years or so. The last cat4 was actually in 2019 so not that long ago. It’s either going to be no big deal or the world is going to end. Either way save the baufangs!!!
  7. Last time this bad of a cme event occurred it was suppose to be in 2005, 19 years ago At the time personally, I didn't care so no memory. But then again alot less electronics were available for the average consumer. So shrug. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk

Hi Shannon, is there a way direct message you or does that happen once I am registered?

  10. I’m running the Midland mag mount (MXTA12) and haven’t had any issues. I’m in a rental so similar situation. Using the Midland ghost (MXTA25) but likely going to give the MXTA26 a try pretty soon.
  11. I've never seen a forecast this bad. At least not that I remember. Any of our seasoned folks seen storms this bad in the last 40 years?
  12. That I don't know. I don't have the ability to program the GM300's to see how it's been setup. I've continued to try and play around, checking the manual and cross referencing things and I'm just, lost.

  14. I’m not an admin. Just a premium member. But your account does not show that you’re Premium. Maybe that’s why.
  15. Hello and thank you for your reply. I have gone to the exact location you have suggested and it displays the same list of clubs on my Mac, on my P.C. and on my phone and none of them show Start a Club as an option. I am wondering if it shows up on yours because you are the administrator or if something needs to be updated in my account to allow my Premium membership to be authorized. Jim
  16. I’ve gotten some cheap magnet mounts at swaps. Also got a new tri-magnet mount new. The later I had to go through and swap out all the steel hardware, screws-washers-nuts, for stainless steel. Check what you have. If it uses steel consider swapping the hardware out for stainless. It will hold up much longer exposed to the weather.
  17. On my phone: click on the hamburger click on browse click on clubs That will show you the club directory. Scroll to the bottom and click on “start a club “
  18. Hello, I am trying to set up a new club. I have read that there is suppose to be a "Start a Club" button on the upper right of the screen, but I am unable to locate it. Can anyone help? Have you set up a club and how did you do it? I am a Premium Subscriber. Thanks, Jim
  19. I have to agree with @WRWE456, more information is needed so we can make recommendations. If you have eight restrictions, then something like the Nagoya UT-72G or Tram 1174 will work well. The Nagoya is 19" long and the Tram is even shorter. The Comet 2x4SR is an excellent antenna if you don't have to worry about height restrictions, it is around 38" long. As mentioned, the center of the cab roof is the best spot. A lip mount on the hood or mounting on the top of the bed rails will work but not ideal or as good as the cab. I agree that going with a NMO mount is best. Go with a magnet mount if you don't want to drill any holes. The Midland and Melowave magnet mounts are pretty nice at reasonable prices.
  20. Yes, that is not clear. Do you mean a repeater for each home, for each to keep in touch with individually, or 1 repeater to cover all the home locations consistently. If that, then it should be somewhat centrally located. Also, the average single- story home is about 25-35 feet to the roof,so 30 feet may really not be much height depending what else is around you. You would want to clear as much in the way of tall buildings, hills and trees as possible. Some mention height above sea level, but that really does not matter, what does matter is height above anything else in your coverage area, whether that area is 50' asl or 500' asl.
  21. It looks like you’re planning to put one repeater in each home. If that’s so, how do the homes communicate with each other? You can’t go repeater to repeater. Or are you planning one repeater, centrally located, with all of the family members bouncing off it with the handheld radios?
  22. That is one negative of using base radios. How long power will last without electricity If you are using baofengs. Buy the battery pack that's let you drop in aa batteries. Have a fresh pack of aa batteries with the aa battery holder. I nice to have is also battery eliminator. At worst if you have gas in the car you can hook that up while the car is running. 23. It's all nothing more than opinions and guesses until you try it. Based on my actual experience, actually using the RT97, I would GUESS it will probably be fine, depending on the terrain as already mentioned. One of the great things about the RT97 vs a "real" repeater (based on my experience using and comparing both types) is the very low power-draw, meaning if you are running it on emergency batteries, it will last a lot longer than a bigger, "better", more powerful repeater. I would also recommend using a good quality antenna, that is correctly tuned for GMRS, and lightly better quality radios - something simple enough for everyone to use, but at least dust and weatherproof. I would also recommend making sure everyone has extra batteries and keeps them charged - a monthly/semi-monthly test with everyone would be a good reminder for everyone to charge and rotate the batteries. EDIT: I forgot the most important part: good quality coax and connectors.. Not just to reduce loss, but to avoid water intrusion.
  24. Th biggest problem is going to be when the retivis takes a dump. I’d never own a retivis anything. It’s only 10w also. Plus do you really need a repeater? Is there a big hill or mountain in the way? You didn’t even mention the important part. Antennas. They mean more than anything else. I’d skip the repeater and make sure every house has a good quality high gain antenna up as high as possible with good feed line. A comet712 running Lmr400 and a 5w hand held will easily do 50 miles line of sight. The repeater doesn’t sound like it’s needed at all. A nice base station at every house would run about $250 total for a 20w radio antenna and coax. And a trickle charger and 12v battery.
  25. Your biggest issue will be terrain between the houses and the repeater. 30' sounds nice but could be worthless in the wrong terrain. Make sure you can get line-of-sight from each house to the repeater and you will be ok. The line-of-sight doesn't have to be perfect like a laser but the closer the better. If you still have trees in the way, more power will come into play to get through them.
  26. Can you get the antenna closer to 50-100 in the middle of the radius, as well as get a repeater with a bit more power? You should be able to cover all 6 houses depending on terrain and obstructions. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
