  3. I used to work with a guy who had no less than 8 mobiles in his personal vehicle. He had pulled the passenger side seat so that he could install a homemade "console" that also held his Laptop and 3 radios, along with his converta-com amp. He also carried at least 3 portables with him most days. I remember asking him one time how many radios he could talk on at once. I also remember that AAA cancelled his membership because he requested too many jump starts. Some people can take anything too far.

  6. two caveats before you go and order QRP gear... 1. As you note, you are not allowed to transmit. 2. Actually getting a contact is not that easy and may require a LOT of time and effort. It is a little like fishing, some people are cut out for it, others not so much.

  7. Get your Ham license and buy a 7 MHz (40 meter) HF QRP radio, a small 35 ah battery, a folding or rollable solar charger (optional) make a wire antenna you can toss up in the trees. Call Mayday. No one local will hear you, but many people throughout the nation will and you can ask for help. I have had someone give me grief about this in the past, saying it doesn't do any good to talk to someone on the radio who is 3 states away and my response is always the same.... if I'm stranded in the mountains of Virginia, someone in Georgia, Maine or California can call 911 just as easily as someone in a nearby town.
