  1. There was a post here recently from someone who had changed the settings on his radio. The second point was really only for someone who already owned the MXT400 and wanted to address the limitations (and didn't care about certification). BTW, one of the limitations is PL tones, and changing that wouldn't affect certification. But, you are 100% correct, If someone is thinking about buying the radio and then changing the bandwidth, they might as well buy that exact same radio from Luiton (LT-590), Retevis (RT-900D), TYT (TH900d), or some other vendor at 1/2 the price, and no limitations.

  2. Great write-up! I love seeing real world results. There is a tremendous value to info like this. That fact that you shared the locations helps, too. We can topology mapping to see what the terrain looks like, which will paint a very clear picture. I'm with you on this. I have had terrible luck with Baofeng mobiles, but my BF-F8HP is a fantastic, inexpensive ham radio. I love wheeling and I don't want to trash any of my radios, but if i am going to make a mistake with my HT, I'd rather have it be my $28 radio instead of my $400+ Yaesu. Especially when having the more expensive radio brings zero benefits to the table while offroading.

  3. The rule applies to the user. Though, the manufacturer cannot claim certification they do not have.

  4. Thanks marc, I really enjoyed reading your explanation; I was able to visualize it. And I also appreciate the additional clarification points. I'm a retired computer programmer and network guy, also pc support. Not an engineer, more a mechanic. More breadth and less depth, so analogies like yours are information I always remember; the finer points not so much.

  5. I have seen that thread and some like it. I have two issues. One is, I don't know anyone who has actually done this... so I am hesitant to mention it. Also, the MXT400 is only certified for narrow band and is not intended to be user configured for wideband. Once you modify the the radio, it is no longer a certified radio, thus not legal. If you are going to do that, you may as well just go buy a ham radio or commercial radio and use it. There are way better radios for the same price or less.
