Has anyone tried the KG 1000M yet?
Craws907 and 3 others reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
Yes, but I cant find anyone to talk to on it.4 points -
I'll take a solid pass. Way, way to much money, even though I'm positive it's a great radio. I used a pair of ICOM MURS handhelds and couldn't get 1 full statute mile out of them. Measured output was 1.2w on high. I sent my son the the school parking lot and he went out of range before he got there. Just for grins, I called out to him with my bullhorn and he could hear that. Could make out what I was saying, but he heard it, which was better than the radios. So, while you're mileage may vary, it's a whole lotta nope for me.4 points

I wanted to share a quick video. I picked up another XTL5000 a few days ago. Got an amazing deal from a friend of mine on a complete system. I did a quick bench test and I am very happy with the power output. The receive sensitivity is amazing, too. I ran this on my bench for about an hour on GMRS and Ham and the unit is still cool to the touch. I am 100% replacing my gear in the Jeep with this.3 points

I personally have not. I’m sure it’s a good radio but it’s a lot to pay for only five channels maxed at 2 watts tx. I imagine it’s the same as the KG 1000G for rx. I wouldn’t say no if it was given to me though ?3 points

Naaa, the REAL arguments are about antennas! Also got a mobile unit for offroad, but didn't find many people to talk with. But around home we have three good repeaters, so plenty to do. I also got repeater-capable handhelds for camping use, and also use one at the home w/ a base antenna positioned in the room for best reception.3 points

@OffRoaderX I don't have a link to the rules explicitly saying it's allowed, but I accidentally paid for (2) licences under the same FRN number and now I have (2) calls. I never use the other one, but it exists in ULS and the feds haven't said anything to me about it yet. I think they were just happy to have their extra $35.3 points

Trying to communicate with local repeater...need help!
CP650 and 2 others reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
are you sure you are using the correct channel "pair"? Its not just "the frequency".3 points -
No PL on 19 or 20 simplex. If using repeater channels, PL 141.3 is generally used for open repeater systems, however not guaranteed. If you program a PL on simplex, you won't hear other traffic on that channel unless they are using the same PL. If you are scanning for traffic, it's best not to program PL because you will hear all traffic, even if they are running any PLs. Hope this helps.2 points

Maybe they're hoping to sell some to walmart drivers? Walmart is known for being a big user of MURS, and in many states a hard mounted radio with hand mic is exempted from hands-free communications device laws....not that you can't achieve this with a portable and hand mic, though. I don't think it's a big change to the firmware between this and the GMRS version... both similarly locked down, just a different range and power level for tx. Being based on the uv920/980 means they already cover both bands anyway.2 points -

I agree with the others. A mobile MURS radio doesn't do anything that a good MURS handheld won't do. Either can be connected to the same external antennas, With a handheld all the controls are in your hand, a feature folks are willing to pay extra for in a mobile radio it would appear, It's possible that the KG1000M has a better receiver than an inexpensive MURS radio, but probably not much different than a decent handheld, 2 watts is 2 watts, regardless of form-factor, 5 channels is 5 channels, regardless of form-factor, If you just want a microphone in your hand, there are ones that plug into the handhelds. It's like they asked "What's a problem nobody has, so we can solve it?"2 points -

Ditto, I'd be happy to try them out if they wanted to ship me a couple MURS radios to test, but the reality is I have no real need that they (or MURS in general) meet that isn't already met with other gear I have ?2 points -

New GMRS User Checking In
WRVF645 and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
I don’t know of a single introductory thread here. If anything you’ll be permanently scarred by the arguments about what kinds of radios are best and whether a roger beep portends the end of the world as we know it, but it’s actually a pretty fun bunch of people. Some of the best introduction to gmrs is in the form of Notarubicon videos on YouTube, although you will also want to pay attention to some of the people here to hear some reasoned differing opinions. In particular, look for his GMRS for Dummies video. Don’t let anyone tell you your radio isn’t good enough. Eventually something someone says may sound like that, but don’t take it personally. You’ll quickly learn what’s good enough for your own needs. Welcome to the forum!2 points -
I was telling Steve (and may have mentioned it earlier), my original FRN was created for managing my amateur license. I created a second FRN for the GMRS license so my wife and kids could each have their own FCC login account to view/manage the GMRS related items without them having access to my account associated with my amateur license. Since I lost my GMRS license info and FRN, I just requested a new license under the FRN I created for my amateur account. Technically, I had two concurrently active GMRS licenses under 2 different FRNs. Though, after Steve helped me with information I needed, I was able to recover my second FRN account, but there is literally nothing listed under it anymore. I have no idea what happened to it.2 points

Looking at the map I don’t see any. There are quite a few in the outlying area and maybe someone here has real world experience in the area. I would certainly try if I were out there just to see if it were possible to reach some. Depending on where out there you are you could get lucky. I would like a Garmin inreach with me if you’re thinking middle of nowhere safety.2 points

Yes. It is listed in public search results for a license in the ULS.2 points

SWR scan on three different antennas
Lscott reacted to MarkInTampa for a question
Let's make it a SWR scan on 4 antennas. Picked up a MFJ 1868 Discone antenna that is supposed to do TX/RX from 50mhz to 1.3Ghz at 200 watts more for a scanning antenna than GMRS but had to run a sweep on it anyway since it could TX on GMRS. Discones are really weird. Looks like a sine wave from 420mhz to 470mhz but SWR never get above 1.6 to 1.1 point -
I know Ram Mounts have many mounting options to include the cupholder idea. Check them out for yourself: https://rammount.com/ Hope this helps!1 point

Don't forget, arguments between hams and GMRS users are always fun too! Although a lot of us fully embrace both.1 point

Is more than one license permitted by the FCC?
SteveShannon reacted to MarkInTampa for a topic
I had my ham license back in 1996 but let it expire. Doing a search on my old callsign (still unassigned) shows it was issued in 1996, expired in 2006 and cancelled by FCC 2008. I didn't remember anything about a FRN when I got my license or if it even existed. When I got my GMRS license in Oct, the FCC site said something about a existing FRN in my name but was tied to a email address from my old dial up provider, phone that doesn't exist anymore and a address long gone but let me create a new one so I guess I now have two FRN's. I clicked on the link you provided and searched my last name and it shows the FRN RegDate was 5/22/2001 (when I wasn't even active anymore) and the same RegDate for my dad who got his license a year or so after me in another state. If I had to guess, FRN wasn't really a thing until 2001 and they moved everyone over to that system but I could be or am probably wrong....1 point -

Thanks at least I wasn’t searching wrong! I take a ZOLEO with me when I’m out there well anywhere outside of normal cell coverage. The next time I heard out there I’ll definitely test things out and see what I can connect to. Just didn’t know if someone already knew of one.1 point

However, if you want a different callsign it is possible to cancel your existing license and get another. There was a guy on here just the other day who has done that four or five times.1 point -
@OffRoaderX I am by no means an authority on this, but this information may help. From what I found, it used to be against the rules, but it isn't any longer. 47 C.F.R. Part 95 Subpart A, specifically 95.131(a) stated "An individual may be licensed as the responsible party for only one GMRS system." Everything I have found suggests that the restriction on having only one GMRS license per individual was removed as part of the FCC's efforts to modernize the GMRS rules in September 2017, primarily to make it easier for families to use the service.1 point

I know multiple FRNs is fine, but wondering if there is anything for us lowly GMRS users specifically prohibiting more than one license. We know the police are allowed to do whatever they want.1 point -
Mobile Unit Wattage
gortex2 reacted to wayoverthere for a topic
I would take the reviewer's results with a grain of salt. Nothing against them (and call me jaded if you want), but I also wouldn't put it past the companies making sure the units going out to be reviewed are "healthy" examples, compared to what gets shipped to the average buyer.1 point -
