  1. @WSFL639 Welcome to GMRS. Lots of mobile radios to choose from. Price and quality both have a fairly large range. The DB-20G is very affordable and is a very popular radio. It goes up from there depending on what you want.
  2. He is wanting to register on myGMRS.com. He can't do that until the myGMRS.com database has been updated with his call sign from the FCC database which isn't as straight forward as you think. Rich just explained this in another thread.
  3. @rdunajewski I wouldn't want to add more work for you but that does sound like a good solution.
  4. I'm sorry to hear you say that. I haven't given up hope yet.
  5. @WRWE456 just because the FCC allows a family to use a single license, that does not mean the registration for this form works that way. Rich can program it however he wants. Maybe he has programmed that way or maybe he intends to some day. I can tell you, as a programmer myself, that not every feature is as easy as people think.
  6. @WSFK616 welcome to GMRS.
  7. @JB007Rules sorry to hear that it has come to this. I know I could never afford such an endeavor and I am grateful for all those that make repeaters available to the rest of us.
  8. RepeaterBook?
  9. That is exactly how it is supposed to work in the US. But for some reason there are "some people" who now think you can't do any until the gobment tells you you can. Don't get me started!
  10. @GreggInFL Your link is to the Baofeng GM-15 Pro. You state that it can be programmed with CHIRP. As far as I can tell, it is still not in CHIRP. Are you able to use a different radio in CHIRP to program it? Thanks.
  11. He said they were "ham-like users" which suggests to me they were GMRS user acting like sad hams. But yes, it they were using GMRS frequencies for ham radio use, that would be one complaint I'm sure the FCC would look into.
  12. If it is that big of a hassle and it is useless, I would just pull the plug and walk away. Spend your resources on something else.
  13. I like to refer to this as a radio's "sense of self preservation."
  14. How and where is the antenna mounted?
  15. @nokones you do love making me jealous don't you. Nice install.
  16. Yep, I watched those two videos by @OffRoaderX just the other day and now I'm thinking about the 805. AGAIN! It would probably be a good one for my wife. She used to work for a company that sells, services, and rents Kenwood radios so she has held some real quality radios in her hand and my CCRs don't quite cut it for her.
  17. I'm still on Baofeng and based on my current economic projections, I'm going to be here a long time.
  18. And read this for a further explanation.
  19. Yep, I've learned to check both places. I think it was about a year ago, not sure exactly, but suddenly a lot of the ones that were listed in both places disappeared from myGMRS.com. I don't know why.
  20. @radiozip that's interesting although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
  21. I keep seeing comments like this between the H3 and the H8. I don't have either but my father-in-law is looking for a radio and I am putting together a list for him. I'll make sure to mention this concerning these two radios. Thanks for the info.
  22. @COBrien keep in mind that super high gain isn't always the best. In general, the higher the gain, the flatter the lobe and the lower the gain the fatter the lobe. In some cases, a high gain antenna can "over shoot the target" so to speak. Just make sure the radiation pattern matches your particular use case.
  23. You may also need to turn on "stale" repeaters.
  24. @nokones I understand your sentiment but as @SteveShannon pointed out, the test actually dose have a lot to do with legal operation. When you get your ham license, you can use whatever equipment you want as long as you make sure your equipment and usage stays within your privileges. With GMRS, it is assumed that the GMRS type-certified equipment is going to do that for you.
