  1. My money is on number 3. I bet the RT22 has an RX tone set. Seems like we are seeing more and more of these FRS radios being shipped out with tones already set.
  2. It could be that from the kitchen you are actually getting the signal through under the thick part of the trees. There was another guy here a few months ago that was dealing with that same issue.
  3. The signal is line-of-sight and travels mostly horizontal. If there is a window in the attic you may have better luck putting the antenna there.
  4. Do you have a layer of that foil barier in your roof?
  5. Like @N6CST I have a Tundra and went straight to the battery. The grommets on each side of the truck have a nipple top and bottom. I used the bottom nipple on the driver's side. Top was already used. The install was very easy. Running the wire from the cab side made it easier to see where to fish the wires.
  6. @LeeBo I've heard of people doing exactly that.
  7. It's my understanding that you also get unlimited reactions which would be nice since I run out so quickly.
  8. Hrm, a WTF beep. That would be nice. I hope my radio has that feature.

You could not have used a more appropriate emoji.
  10. Yeah, what @Tip10 said. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for picking on people with no arms.

LOL! All randomness aside, I think they turned off your hearing aids. Not looking forward to the day when I need them.
  12. Nothing against Motorola but if I drop a Baofeng I can afford to replace it.

    New to GMRS

I agree with @SteveShannon. If you are in a neighborhood with lots of houses and trees, that's about all you can expect from a couple of HTs
  14. @Rulander welcome to GMRS.
  15. Are you using a repeater channel, that is, above 22?
  16. Yep, that's the meanest thing I've seen @Blaise do.
  17. Some did, some did not. Some had backup power that lasted long enough for mains to come back online, some never lost mains. Some lost antennas, some did not. I had one ham repeater and one GMRS repeater I could still use. Also had some ham friends just close enough for simplex.
  18. Looks like N-type on the antenna. LMR-400 or better is recommended for the UHF band.
  19. I fight this same battle and it can be quiet frustrating. Especially since we just recently went through a hurricane and two-way radios were all that worked.
  20. I have the UT-72 dual band. It works quite well. Since you are using the dedicated GMRS version, it should work even better.
  21. It's a good idea to use your radio regularly to stay in practice. In an emergency stress will be high and the last thing you want is to be fumbling with the radio or worse, a dead battery.
  22. I can tell you from experience, you don't want to go down that path.
  23. With that "kit" he will not need another adapter for a mobile. All he will have to do is remove the SMA adapter being used for the HT. The cable already has a PL-259 which is why it comes with the SMA adapter for HT in the first place.
  24. @WSEG508 If the repeater uses an output tone, use that to squelch out all the simplex traffic.
  25. Always use a lightning arrestor on the antenna feed line. The point is to always try and keep that killer outside the house.
