Don't they provide legal help if you need it? If so, it might be worth renewing just for that bit of "insurance." Especially with HOAs being the way they are.
It's my understanding that there is a firmware update for the Quangsheng K5 that allows HF and even CW. It's an interesting radio. People can write their own firmware for it.
From what you've described, this sounds like the most likely scenario. Your friend could open squelch on the repeater but now can't, the owner must have changed the tone.
@n2877 The question isn't so much the range of the repeater. You are obviously in "hearing" range. The question is whether or not you can hit the repeater with your radio. As @BoxCar asked, how far are YOU from the repeater and is there anything in between to hinder YOUR signal like trees, houses, etc.
I like that idea. I can't afford the better radios but I do have an old Kenwood TH-75A that was given to me. Just last night I had my UV-5R tuned into a net. Every time someone un-keyed, it let out a very loud and obnoxious noise. I turned on the Kenwood and it did not have that noise. With both of them on and sitting on the table, it was very obvious the difference between the two.
Even though I can't afford the good stuff, it's nice to know you actually get something for what you pay.
If the UV-5R has a tone set on the TX set the same tone on RX for the 905G.
If the UV-5R has no tone set on TX, then there should not be a tone set on RX on the 905G.
@WSCA774 I used https://hamstudy.org/ mostly. They have a phone app as well. The explanations are good but don't hesitate to use google to find out more.
I want to get the ARRL books some day for reference.
