  1. @CyborgAlienWRYG738 Double check channel 31 in your file. Probably just a typo but 146.520 isn't GMRS.
  2. @WRZF693 I'm not familiar with the GM-15 but yes, offset is the difference in TX and RX. For GMRS it is always +5MHZ and in most if not all GMRS radios will already be set on the repeater channels. All you have to do is enter the appropriate tone for the repeater. Also, try to stay focused on one thread. I answered some of your questions on a different thread already.
  3. @WRZF618 Just to be clear, channels 1-22 are intended for simplex(point-to-point). Channels 23+ are duplex(using repeaters). In simplex, you don't have to use tones but you can if you want.
  4. Josh has a video that helps to show the strong points of CHIRP.
  5. I don't believe that is at all accurate. It seems to me that most repeater owners have been quite generous in allowing us to use the expensive equipment that they paid for themselves.
  6. @WRZE489 welcome to the greater Houston area. I'm east of Houston.
  7. I connect to repeaters while they are available. After that, I take a nap until I get to my destination.
  8. Makes you wonder why they were VEs in the first place.
  9. I agree with this. There are obviously differences between the two but they are both still two-way radio. And no reason why people can't enjoy one or the other or both. People are already doing that. I have many tools to work on the car, no reason we can't have many tools for two-way radio.
  10. I can't say for sure it's the reason but for a while there were some people that were harassing and spying on people with their drones. That may be what caused the change. Seems like there are always "some people" who have to ruin it for everyone else.
  11. With ham you can use more power. When you are trying to penetrate through the trees extra power can help.
  12. He gave you those. Page 48 of your manual (page 48 in pdf anyway) gives this: Use the number next to the code.
  13. I haven't done much mobile programming (mostly desktop) but I have thought about something like this. If I can find the time, I might look into it further.
  14. TX = Encode, RX = Decode. You need to Encode, you don't have to Decode unless you want to filter out everything else but the repeater. It is recommended to leave the RX out until you have everything else working and then add it so you don't have to listing to all the extra stuff on the frequency. BTW: GMRS is not HAM.
  15. As far as I know, you can't assign an offset to channels 1-22 on a GMRS radio. Scratch that, I misread the post.
  16. @BoxCar The mic is third picture on the left. BTW, I'm still trying to decide on a mobile unit. Can you give me some links to the 45W you mentioned? Thanks.
  17. @Kirtelliott Welcome! "Middle Tennessee" sounds like a cool place. Kind of like "Middle Earth" from Lord of the Rings.
  18. Forget the radio, this is really what makes me jealous.
  19. Don't make it so complicated. You don't have to let anyone else use your license. Tell them to get their own license. It's only $35 and no test.
  20. 2.5 miles with houses and trees in between is a long way. This is one place where more wattage actually comes into play. An antenna upgrade usually does help. Height is might always holds true. But when trees and houses are in the way, power is definitely a factor. You may need more power to penetrate the trees and houses. Just this Saturday, I proved that to myself by hitting a repeater 10 miles away with 8w that I could not hit with 4w, all else being the same.
  21. A good repeater is a significant investment. It is up to the owner to decide how open it is. Yes, it would be nice if it was all easy but repeaters are not a primary part of what GMRS is intended for. Repeaters are just a side benefit. I use a repeater almost every day and I'm glad they are available but I'm not about to demand anything of the owners. Rather I am very grateful to them for making the repeaters available even if I do have to dig a little to figure some of them out.
