  1. I'll second what @WRZD706 said and add that you may want to start with Tone instead of TSQL. This is a common method when first programming a radio for a repeater. That way you hear everything until you are sure you have everything else set up correctly. Then switch to TSQL to squelch out simplex signals. See https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MemoryEditorColumns for more information on this.
  2. Wow! A lot to know before assuming you have your bases covered.
  3. @CTarna Welcome. I think you will enjoy GMRS.
  4. I'm not a big fan of government intervention but the government does have it's place and serves a purpose. @PRadio pointed out some very good reasons why we need the FCC. Without them, you probably wouldn't be able to watch the big game on your TV.
  5. @73blazer Wow! That's the most troubling complaint yet. Stay safe out there.
  6. I'd prefer to keep GMRS analog. I can't afford new equipment.
  7. @JoCoBrian I'm doing the face palm. @Sshannon Thanks for keeping me strait.
  8. That's a great suggestion. I can't remember if it was on this forum or somewhere else but there was a guy that just started using his new radio and someone in the neighborhood stunned his radio. Took him a while to get it straightened out if I recall.
  9. If you are trying to penetrate a bunch of dense trees it will make a difference.
  10. I guess I wasn't clear. GMRS HTs can have a removable antenna and most do. FRS HTs cannot have a removable antenna. I don't understand why a GMRS HT with a removable antenna would be excluded from having this feature.
  11. The non-removable antenna requirement is really weird. Not sure why they added that. @Sshannon do you know why the antenna requirement is there?
  12. I'll second what @WRHS218 said and add that just because the info on the page is "stale" doesn't mean the repeater isn't active. As far as access goes, if you are in Texas try out texasgmrs.net.
  13. In my neighborhood wattage does come into play. It is because of all the thick trees not because of distance. Better antennas on the HTs has also been a big help.
  14. Some of you guys like making me jealous.
  15. That is a good idea. I've done the same thing with fewer columns. Also, I have a few different programs and an excel sheet for each. I have one for when I'm in my home/work area, one for when I travel north, one for north west and two for west depending on exactly where I'm going. This helps to keep the file smaller and more manageable. If I ever take a different path, I'll set up a new one. A friend in my area does the same thing.
  16. There are many ham radios that can transmit on GMRS. It's just not legal to do so.
  17. @WRQC527 Did you mean repeater-builder.com ?
  18. Maybe use the Up/Down vote available in the Technical discussion forum.
  19. @WRZI776 THAT is a cool call sign. I wish I had that one. 1776 baby!
  20. This is why you download from your radio and copy/paste into that file. CHIRP files are radio specific. I can't load my UV-5R GMRS file into my UV-5R8W and vice versa. I can however copy lines from one to the other and then load.
  21. @WRZF618 How far are you from the repeater? You will usually be able to receive from it further than you can transmit to it. Also, get someone to help you and take both radios outside at a distance of approximately front yard to back yard may be enough. Then see if you can communicate between the two. And like @Sshannon said, remove the receive tone until you have everything else working.
