  1. @BigBangMachine and @WSDF270 Welcome to GMRS.
  2. In what area are you referring to? Call signs are used quite regularly in the Houston area.
  3. @BlackJack082978 Welcome to GMRS. There may be some other listing with repeaters in your area. MyGMRS.com lists a lot of repeaters in Texas but there are also many that are not listed. Some of them are listed on TexasGMRS.net. Do a google search and you may find something. Sorry for your loss.
  4. Did you try setting duplex to "off"
  5. As you lessen the load on the plane, the plane can fly further. CW flies a long way.
  6. I think it has to do with the manufacturers not understanding the spirit of the law in the US, that is, we can do anything we want until there is a law that states otherwise. Instead, they think we can't do anything until there is a law that says we can. The FCC regulations on GMRS do not forbid having multiple channels of the same simplex frequency with a different tone, or no tone on each one. Same with repeater frequency pairs. They give us lots of channels but lock down those channels in ways that are not necessary, and like @amaff said, very annoying.
  7. Remember on Signs when that kid was listening to the aliens through the baby monitor? Just saying.
  8. My work computer is Win10 but I'm afraid to ask IT what their plans are.
  9. Can't say what the problem is exactly but I know that many of us have that same issue. I did hear a short blurb a couple of times. Some people say it works just fine for them. So far, I haven't heard of a fix for the rest of us.
  10. That!!! ^^^^^^
  11. Sounds kind of like the Ch. 15 bug that affected more than one model radio.
  12. I'm glad you can afford the nice equipment. Some of us simply can't afford it and buy what we can. I can save about $20 a month for radios, sometimes. If I try to save for a Motorola, Bird, etc. I will never get on the air. As it is, I have been able to buy Baofeng UV-5R, AnyTone AT-778UV, Nagoya UT-72. With these, I have great conversations every day.
  13. It's not about popularity, it's about technical correctness. It's the same way with Stackoverflow. Answers are "peer reviewed" and the OP can get a better idea of which answers to trust.
  14. In Technical Discussion you can vote on answers. After that, you can sort by vote or by date.
  15. @WSDD519 Welcome to GMRS.
  16. If you can get an antenna up high enough, you'd be surprised how far you can reach. But then again, that can get very expensive if you need to go very high.
  17. @WQNG647 The radio I carry most of the time is the UV-5R8W. Yes, I know it isn't a GMRS radio. There are some newer radios and certainly many better ones but these are very in-expensive and work quite well.
  18. Some of the reasons I'm considering that CB you mentioned with the jumper for 10M. Edit: Whew! 667 posts. Nice to get off of that "666."
  19. @WSCZ240 In the greater Houston area we have a lot of obstruction. Trees, buildings, overpasses, etc. Sometimes moving a very short distance suddenly clears up a signal. Good antennas help, and more wattage to get though the trees, but height is the biggest factor to a good signal. Edit: Just noticed that this is my 666th post. Better post again real quick.
  20. I am not familiar with this particular context but it appears that there is no difference in this context. In certain programming languages, it is used for lambda expressions which I will not go into here because it is doubtful that it has any application here. Have you tried using both to see if you get any practical difference?
  21. Certainly a possibility. As the shenanigans on the air increase, the frequency of tone changes increase as well.
  22. At least he's diligent to do his eye exercises.
  23. That's my problem. I do better on the ground than on top of the house. To get above the thick part of the foliage, I'm going to have to get a lot higher than I can afford right now.
  24. @warthog74 Good thing you didn't have to worry about OSHA.
