  1. Oh my! That would just encourage me to use that 2m frequency for a daily net or something like that...

...or better still, use it as the output frequency for a DMR repeater!

Lol. I generally use it at the other walmart to ask if any employees know where (this) product is. I look around, but, sometimes can't find what I'm looking for. And, It's tough finding employees sometime to ask. I'd cross band it, but, it won't reach that far. Almost, though.

  2. Yeah, but, I feel that breaking multiple rules is worse than breaking less rules. Rules are rules regardless, and, some may feel that one rule is just as bad as three or four, but, still. They're not even using a tone, It's open. But, I suppose nothing is going to happen with a worldwide chain like Walmart, and, It's not like Walmart is going to listen to a mere customer. I think they should at least use a tone, though. And the guy wants to tell me "don't program that frequency into your radio because the manager may wounder where you got the frequency" as if the frequency was private and owned.

  3. So, the walmart employee talked with me today. They use FRS/GMRS 5 sometimes, but, he told me the frequency the team generally uses which is 2m. I knew another walmart used that frequency, but, didn't know that one did, too. I'm curious what they think / know of the rules if not all (or any) of the employees are licensed.

  4. Yeah, non removable antenna sucks. The 2w limit is nice, but, I don't know how long It'll be before someone releases new combo radios with that change. Ashame that all my handhelds are still in like new condition because I use them lightly, so, I'd probably keep using mine up for a while anyways. And those Dakota Alerts are neat. I'd get a couple if I had the spare funds, but, I've been spending a lot on other radio supplies lately.

  5. So, I seem to be having issues with any repeaters more than seven or nine miles away. I'm using a 9' vertical fiberglass omni on about a 33' mast, and, my TYT TH9800. I reach local repeaters just fine on low, but, I tried to reach a repeater today to check into the net, It's the alternate repeater as the local one was down. It's about 15 miles away. I was pushing 50w and couldn't reach it first. The signal was detected by the control, but, couldn't hear. I was able to reach it barely, but, enough for them to copy what I said the second time. Most of the regular check-ins and net controls know my setup and thinks It's odd that I've been having issues reaching repeaters that distance. I know my equipment is pretty much entry level, I can't afford an antenna over $100 and a base or mobile over $500, but, I still thought that was odd. Any ideas? My meter shows power and SWR is okay. Echolink is nice, but, not all repeaters have that mode. I know various factors such as weather and terrain play a part, as well. However, as I said, most regular check-ins know my setup and terrain, and, they think It's odd.

A side note, any free coverage maps for amateur repeaters similar to RF Finder? (It's not free)

Okay, I found k5ehx.net. And I didn't notice until now that Repeater Book does that. I generally use the app, so, didn't know. Well, some repeaters.

  6. I'm looking for a  Tactical type U94, amplified or non amplified, that accepts a 3.5mm plug such as a mobile phone headset or a mono acoustic headset. I've checked a few YouTube videos, but, they never seem to mention what exactly the plug is. One did mention a milspec plug, which seems to be about the size of an auxiliary or rca plug. I'm looking for one with a 3.5mm plug and one with a two pin kenwood style plug.

  7. US Navy and Radio Operator, Harold Cantrell, age 85 went missing July 05 2017 in the Daytona Beach area. He went missing from the Health Center at Indigo Palms Assistant Living around Dunn Avenue and Clyde Morris. Harold is reported to be last seen by foot with diabetes and alzheimer's. Harold was wearing black pants, white on black long shirt, black US Navy ball cap. Harold is equipped with a "Tile", a bluetooth and GPS enabled device that can alert other Tile app users of all Tiles within a 100' radius. Although Harold is elderly with health conditions, he is still fit and can move fairly quickly. I don't know how bad the alheimer's is, but, I would suspect that if he hasn't traveled too far and is still okay, he could be around public centers such as shops. That's just an assumption.

There's word that his wife is located in Flagler County and his childhood home is Illinois.

Apologies for reporting this here. The announcement was made out to radio operators in the area and search teams a moment ago. I can't do much to help but what ever I can do, so, just thought I'd share here for anyone in the area. Also apologize if this isn't the correct category.

  8. I want to apologize to the team for the recent thread flood, by the way.

As far as I know, the handhelds such as UV-5R and UV-82 series has the FM Radio and Monitor / Flashlight enabled by default. A recent UV-82HP I ordered has the FM enabled, but, the Monitor / Flashlight is not working. I see no feature mention in the Chirp, stock software or radio menu about this issue. I have contacted Baofeng regarding the issue (as well as a couple other issues because the radio seems to be a return) but, I wanted to get anyone's opinions here in case I'm missing something or is it just defective?

PS, sorry if this should be in Technical.

Edit: I found the problem. The Monitor / Flashlight button is kind of bent off of the board and needs a new soldering. I hate dealing with exchanges, so, I'll take care of that. I just thought I'd check, reminds me of a programming cable that I ordered. One of the pins on the USB part was not soldered at all. I also cut one of those plastic clips for bread bags to fit underneath for better support. It seems that when pressing the rubber button on the outside, it puts strain on the inner button contacts on the board. And I don't press hard, it was like that out of the box.

  9. For the TYT TH-9800, (I assume for similar models such as the TH-7800) does anyone have ideas on adding any sort of beep or tone with the crossband repeater mode so that I know when I'm reaching / out of range? Although I understand just because I hear a tone doesn't necessarily indicate how well I'm being heard or hearing the other peer(s). I couldn't find a roger beep. And the PTT ID or Ani doesn't seem to work during the crossband repeater mode.

    By the way, there's some features within Chirp and the stock software for the TYT TH-9800 that I couldn't find in the operators manual to understand what it is / does. Such as;

    Auto Transfer

    Auto Contact Always Remind

    Left Squelch

    Right Squelch

    Right Function Key

    Span Transit Exit Delay

In the P1 functions, (I know those are the programmable keys),

    I don't don't understand what;

    Rev

    Pri

    PPTR

    TCALL

    MHz

    SQL.OFF

I kind of get the Right / Left Squelch and SQL.OFF, but, each band has actual squelch knobs on the radio unit, so, confused me why there's squelch settings in the software.

  10. It seems to sound different with a different duration each time, though. Eh, okay, maybe it is. It's none of my business, though.  I try to follow rules myself, but, I don't like being the type to interfere with someone else that (might) not be following rules. Unless directly asked, of course. Everyone does as they choose at they're own expense. I didn't say anything to those kids whom are back at it after fun with the fireworks, I presume.

  11. I advise to stay away from the DM-5R entirely. I had one for several days and ran it though extensive tests only to find that it is in no way compatible with any mode other than Tier 1, or a bastardized version of Tier 2 where it uses both time slots simultaneously.

The only radios they are fully compatible with are themselves. Using them however will seriously cause interference with any other local operators and/or repeaters.

Yeah. A couple sources mentioned that there was no issue using analog mode on the DM-5R, though.

  12. Not necessarily,Fusion has option to use it with Raspberry pi and other sources that will get you into world wide rooms and there more digital repeaters in the US than you think...William

I don't care for pi much except key lime, but, it has to be more of a cheesecake type than custard. I hate custard, except frozen custard. But, I love cheesecake. Blackberry, blackcurrent and pear pi is okay. Raspberry pi sounds nice, but, I never tried it.

Anywho, I did consider trying one of those Baofeng DM-5R's, because I'd like to play around with digital a bit, but, from all the sources I've checked, it doesn't seem to communicate with other digital radios. It can receive, but, not  be heard. Some radios may receive the signal from it, but, not decode it. I considered one of the TYT MD's, but, the only ones in my budget are single band. I don't like being limited to one band, and, the dual band version is too much for me. There are quite a few digital repeaters around, especially echolink (I don't mean to refer echolink as digital, I know) Regarding a digital mobile, though, those seem to be a bit pricey for me for the need. I usually try to get the cheapest but best value I can without being too cheap in quality.

  13. I question if I received a refurbished unit. Aside from that tape underneath the screen, I've been having mic issues. The transmit hung up twice on someones repeater, and, the keys have either been multi pressing or using the wrong function. PS, does anyone know how I can slightly increase the cross repeater without increasing the antenna height? Maybe a counterpoise somewhere? The range is almost where I need it to be, not very far off.

  14. I've been hearing what "appears" to b CW on GMRS 4. It doesn't seem to be a PTT ID. Although I can decode it, I don't actually know CW, so, haven't done that. Is CW allowed on GMRS?

PS, those kids I mentioned in another thread are really starting to bug. They're using that call tone over and over between each other all day. And last night I caught them doing something.

  15. Do you want something cheap or something that works (decently well)?

I get it, I mean not everyone has money to throw at this hobby, but the best experience is had with moderately good or better equipment. Some of this stuff on the market I would not touch with a 39.5 Foot pole....or an low band 1/4 wave whip....for that matter.

I have a UV5R, it has so many quirks, I consider it a toy more than something that I rely on.

To give you an idea of what "quality" is fine for me, the Baofeng BF-888s and UV-5R's are fine. IF, of course, the 888s would be dual band and the UV-5R was a 16 channel handheld with no display and the many buttons. The radios will not be used as personal radios, I have my better handhelds for that. For the intended application, however, something cheap in my specified criteria is all.

  16. Just food for thought, with the GMRS-V1 you can get the use you want for your needs, to include programming your weather band channels and be compliant with the FCC parts 95A & 15B. The cost of this model maybe more than what you want to pay (currently$54.99) from BTech and Amazon) but at least you will be legal in operating.

The GMRS-V1 is not dual band or a 16 channel no display handheld and doesn't fit my criteria. I don't plan on using GMRS.

  17. I kind of understand about trying to explain something to someone that may have a higher rank or profession, sometimes all you can really do is just go along with it. Even if you do say something, sometimes the higher party will just continue believing that they are correct. Reminds me when I tried to tell my cable provider to not cut that coax because there is cable service in another room beyond the wall. He didn't listen. Lucky for me I can clean that up by adding a coupler and a splitter when he leaves. Anyways, It's kind of two side story deal. One side I'd say only go for it if you feel it could be useful. For me, though, I hardly use more than FM on 2m and 70cm, maybe a little of 6m. But, I don't have much use to upgrade. Although I know a lot of people like to encourage everyone to keep upgrading, and, that's okay, too.

  18. Dang. That would be great, but, unfortunately, it kind of needs to be VHF and UHF, one reason is because I planned to have NOAA programed. I have several Baofeng BF-888s, they generally cost about $14 each. But, they're UHF only. It's good as you described, for people trying to learn, It's nice having very few buttons to mess up something. Especially for the clumsy ones. The PC programmable only radios with no more than three buttons that I can limit power or lock is great for that. I like the small size of those you mentioned. I'm looking for about two to start off with, three would be better, depending on the price. But, three would be a little unnecessary. Hmm don't know why a lot of the dual band 16 channel radios are pricey and the cheap ones are UHF only.
