  1. you can expect to loose 5 to 7 percent in range and depending on the audio circuitry in the radio audio can sound good or bad. I have had some in building issues w/NB, also I was running 650 narrow for a while due to adjacent channel interference and found a loss in horizon areas where I could talk through in wide before.
  2. ****addition to previous post**** times on what I heard yesterday. 13:25 there was a 1kc test tone 13:48 some feedback noise. sounded like some one was setting up a radio. 15:50 conversation mentioning "blue mail" nothing descriptive in the conversation though. the partial call sign was WQLA. think I'm going to set up a separate RX unit up there on that PL w/recorder, I think that would help find out who these guys are. still think its a bi-directional link repeater, just need to find the other 2 sides of it. JE
  3. w/reference to this. I was racking some new equipment today at the 650 site and had my machine in monitor to see what it was hearing as I worked. around 12:30 I heard what was described above. hooked up my decoder and waited to see what came up.....532 DPL. these 2 guys talked for a few minutes no call signs or ID they were however using MDC. about an hr later I hear what sounded like some one testing a radio w/same DPL, mostly keying and blowing into the mic. I then heard one of the persons that was previously talking say "502 theta" and then asking for 522. a short while after that I heard a 1Kc tone, like a test tone that was around 14:30 or so. now for the more interesting part............ it sounds like a link repeater, meaning it set up reverse of what it is suppose to be. now I have looked at all the listed machines in NY & NJ and saw nothing listed as theta. also I forgot to mention that I had my portable w/me also in open channel. now at 900+ feet even on an HT I should have heard something on the low side. I'm just sorry that I didn't have my service monitor up there w/me today, at least I could have seen the signal levels and done a split freq search. ah maybe neat time. I did however get a partial call if it was them but I was preoccupied w/other things at the time. I did make some notes will post up later.
  4. ~150 or so.

  6. thats the 5/8 cable?
  7. try working w/1 5/8" hard line. that will knock you out if your not careful.
  8. ran across this looking for a customer. would have to ask on the connectors as I'm not sure what ones would be compatible w/cables. I would imagine it would either be RFS or Andrew/Commscope. http://www.tessco.com/products/displayProductInfo.do?sku=94526&eventPage=2 http://www.tessco.com/products/displayProductInfo.do?sku=397793&eventPage=3 ***update*** connectors are only available from the manufacture. http://www.eupen.us/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=EUPEN&Category_Code=1_2_Conn http://www.eupen.us/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=EUPEN&Category_Code=7_8_Conn
  9. ran across this while looking for something else and thought it would be good read. http://www.srgclub.org/Desense_testing.html
  10. you don't even see the antennas any more. I have had several meets w/field agents over the yrs, the new stuff you don't see.
  11. good luck trying to do that here. short of monitoring, recording, finding the location and then turning it over to the FCC. I find construction co. to be the worst offenders, they buy radios off the net w/whatever freq's in them and royally screw up my week.
  12. both of my machines have 50A PS's. 3.5 A of charge will not be a problem. measured current draw is ~15A in TX W/amps. just an FYI most of the PS out there are rated at intermittent use for max draw. an example would be Astrons 12A supply is rated for 9A continuous and 12 intermittently. the 50's I have are 37A cont. and 50A int. you would need at least what you machine draws in TX plus the 3.6 and I would add 1 or 2 more for head room.
  13. record it on your phone next time and post it up
  14. nope. a little too far away from Trenton to hear any thing, even off my midtown sites.
  15. was out in Freeport LI last night worked ok.
  16. not yet
  17. I meant to post this for a while for those looking for an economical way to back w/batteries. http://www.dxengineering.com/parts/asr-bb-30m I have not bought from this place but it had the best pics as a reference. small and easy to wire, just need a big battery.
  18. did some testing w/cash082. goes futher south that I thought but we'll have to see how clean it is.
  19. I can't even begin to tell you guys about what I see almost regularly inthat respect.
  20. 575 is now at full power. if you haven't heard it before you should now. will be testing all week. I have not addressed the morse problem yet. I took a couple of hrs to rearrange the rack it is in to accomadate the new supply and amp. I have decided to to put a backup on this as it will only cost me for the batteries and some time to do the work.
  21. thanks William. Dan most radios have a way to them into "monitor". Motorola's can be programed to to be either "open"(static) or silent (squelched) and in addition can be mometary or toglled to stay in monitor. my Kenwoods have the monitor "off" or "on" . in addition to that most will also have some kind of visual indication that there is activity on the channel (LED or icon of some sort) this is how most of my radios are set up.
  22. if you go back and look at the clip, the Volly 's were using HT1250's just like mine. as for the freq they were on most of them at least around here have very few options or get a freq in the IG pool. I can name 4 volly 's a school bus company and a "transport" outfit on the same freq just in my listening area.
  23. as a general rule 10% of forward power is the reflected limit. meaning if you have 10W reflected on 100W forward I would consider that to be a bad SWR. you had 2.5W on 11W that is over 25%. that is NG for the radio and will cause damage. now you have 0.5 on 11 witch is ~5%, its OK but would like to see it a little lower. I personally like to see 1% if it is at all possible. did you measure the SWR after the duplexer? most of the time unless there is somthing radiclay wrong w/duplexer the SWR should be a pass through, meaning you should see the same SWR on the input and output. how much 1/2" hard line were you looking for?
  24. your right, PG. there are a few radios that can be "tricked" into going where there not suppose to.
  25. nice machine. you can do a lot w/that. my suggestion if you want to do multiple tones, is to monitor your radio for traffic and leave the others closed. as a general rule I leave my radios in monitor all the time. the exception being when my other half is in the car.
