From what little I've researched about DMR there's way more to programming them than with the standard analog radios. I'm going to stick with analog for now.

The only thing I have an issue with is not being able to lock out channels I don't want to transmit on. Every other radio I have can do this but not the FT-65r.

No, that's why I like it. I know if I'm talking to someone while hunting /shooting I won't have to worry about others on the channel.

I had a KG-UV9D Plus(I know, it's a HAM radio)and ended up sending it back because Airbands didn't work. Simpler is better for me. That's why the BTech GMRS Pro went back. Too many things that I didn't need like GPS and a compass and not CHIRP compatible. I'm happy with the 805g, I can live without NOAA since I have it on all the other radios.

The KG-UV9G is a nice radio but at $167 it's just a bit out of my price range. Truthfully, the Talkpod A36 Plus does everything I want to do. I have mine programed with GMRS, MURS and I scan local Airbands with it. I could add Public Safety to the scan but that would just add confusion to things. It also has NOAA and FM Broadcast radio. Price point is $35 with a 10% off coupon on Amazon.

Yes but they cost more than I want to spend and IMHO are more complicated than I want to deal with. The 805g would be the PERFECT GMRS radio if they'd add NOAA and it would be easy to do since the 805m MURS version IS VHF.

Why, this radio doesn't transmit data so the antenna has zero to do with it's Type 95e approval. This is also a Superhet radio so the radio circuit is a lot higher quality than my $20 Baofeng radios. Also, not to get off track but I have a UV-5R, 2/UV-82's a Talkpod A36 Plus and a Yaesu FT-65r, all of which get NOAA and 3 of which were in the $20 price range. The 805g is just my first actual GMRS approved radio.

While "Karen" does generally apply to a female "GMRS Richards" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Since "Sad HAM" has such a ring to it I needed something with equal zest.

In breaking with my tradition of being such a GMRS "Outlaw" by using my unlocked HAM radios I thought it would make some of the GMRS Karens happy to know that I now have a legitimate GMRS Type 95e approved radio. My Wouxun KG-805g came in yesterday and I got it all set up and ready to go. I'm glad I went with it over the 905g because it has Broadcast FM Radio so I can keep in touch with the local news and listen to music. I wish it had NOAA but I guess for $80 bucks you can't have everything. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it so far and once my Nagoya 701G antenna gets in tomorrow I may do a video on it for the YouTubes.

Ditto, as much "wind" as some here would like to blow about this or that FCC Rule you're only going get busted if you're jamming a repeater, broadcasting on Emergency Service Frequencies or talking about something illegal like a drug deal or other criminal activity. Just talking to friends and family about normal,everyday stuff won't even be noticed by the FCC.

Technically, by Rule your GMRS License covers your immediate family(wife,kids,brothers, sisters,etc.)that live in the same State AND they too need to give your(the)call sign every 15 minutes to stay in compliance. If you don't follow this "Rule" then you know what'll happen......NOT A DANG THING, that's what. Go watch NotaRibicon's latest video on the YouTubes and you'll see just how many and why people were busted by the FCC.

There are plenty of small 30-60 watt solar panels on Amazon that have USB support. That being said it's best to charge a small power station and use that to charge equipment. Generally I like to over provision my solar panels since you'll normally get about 80% efficiency and it's nice to have a bit more power for overcast days. I have a lot of solar videos on my YouTube channel, it's something that I think is a must for anyone who wants to be prepared. Ditto, life is too short to have to deal with a radio that won't work properly. There's too many other radios that do work well so I'd find a different option and give it a try.

CHIRP will work for programming frequencies if you use the KG-UVD1P profile. It won't let you do settings since the 805g is a single band UHF and the UVD1P is a duel band VHF/UHF but I set mine up today with that profile then went back in with the menu to do my settings.

True to form the FCCs like other government agencies have Rules that make ZERO sense. If I'm on GMRS/FRS channels 8-14 with my GMRS radio set to NFM and low power(1/2 watt)the isn't my GRMS radio effectively an FRS radio at that point? Same channel, same bandwidth, same power setting so how could ANYONE know that it wasn't an FRS radio. I think a lot of you guys are way to caught up in the "Rules & Regulations " instead of just enjoying the fun of talking to friend on the radio.

So if I have my GMRS radio tuned to an FRS frequency so that I'm using it as an FRS radio then technically I'm on a license free channel so GMRS Rules(saying my call sign every 15 minutes) doesn't apply since I'm not on a channel where I need a license.

So what if I get a set of FRS radios, do I still need to use my call sign when I'm talking on them?

What about spurious emissions? Is it any cleaner than a new UV-5r HAM version? This is kind of my point in saying the radio shouldn't matter as long as you're transmitting on channels you're licensed for. The Talkpod A36 Plus is a perfect example. It's HAM and GMRS certified so technically if you got the HAM version and unlocked it for GMRS use you'd still be using the same radio, just on different frequencies.

And I'd be willing to bet the only difference is the sticker.

I guess I'm just too Libertarian for some people. I understand that there are "Rules and Regulations" about the frequencies we can use. I just don't think it makes sense to regulate the equipment. I think ALL radios that are manufactured and sold should be "legal" to use on any and all frequencies that a person is licensed to use. That would solve a lot of these issues.

How, pray tell, have I "turned" on you? I simply believe as a Free American I should have the Right to use any radio I want to talk on the GMRS channels that I'm licensed to use. I'm not going to talk on HAM frequencies, I'm not licensed for those. I honestly don't understand why some make such a HUGE deal about the equipment when the REAL focus should be on the channels/frequencies we're using. If you're licensed for GMRS then talk on GMRS, the radio that's used shouldn't matter.
