I just ordered a UV-5RM Plus, it'll be here tomorrow and I'll see if it responds differently to CHIRP than the AR-5RM. It'd probably going to be the same radio just with different stickers but you never know. Either way it'd be good to have 2 of the higher powered radios.

    I'll post the results.

I could be wrong, but I was thinking the UV-5RM could not RX airband like the AR-5RM.

I like how you think. Just get mom her own license, isn’t she worth it?

    Good point.

    Dear Mom,

    How are you doing?

The siblings and I know you are short on funds, and cannot make this months mortgage payment, so we got together and chipped in.

You now have a GMRS license! So exciting!

    Anyway, Love you!

    Your kids.

(Yes, im going to hell 8-P )

ok-thank you! I connected to the open repeater, which is a nice victory. No luck on the closed repeater yet, though.

Something that is a bit hard to figure out in CHIRP is it is mostly smart.

If you think of it as a left to right fill in the blanks task you usually get everything right.

    1) Put in the freq

    2) Select mode

        A) TSQL - TX RX same - it will ask for the tone.  Dont touch any other tone or DCTS setting or Cross mode setting, its in there.

            a) Cross Modes are weird.  You select tone->tone and it asks for them, if they are the same it goes, its actually TSQL (or DTCS for digital) and sets the mode for it.

So, im not sure why in the cross mode setting it has an option of Tone->tone, when it just makes it TSQL in the tone mode (same for DTCS), but yeah.

    3) At this point all you need to change on the channel is the offset settings, and if DTCS the polarity if needed.

    4) If any of these are a mix like digital and tone, its best to add freq like in 1), then go to Cross mode and select direction.  It will ask for the tones.

        A)  On these settings, everything before "- >" is the TX, after is the the RX. it will ask for each and set everything else it needs for those options.

Basically, for CHIRP you only have to put in a freq, select something from Tone Mode or Cross Mode, it will ask for the Tones and/or Digital. put those in as it asks, and dont touch anything else in these positions except polarity for digital modes.  Its easy to overthink it otherwise.

This info piece was brought to you by someone on a Friday and already on the way to a shitfaced drunken weekend.  There could be errors, my bad.

Seems that the UV5-RM and the AR5-RM are programmed differently.
The UV is programmed “legally” and thr AR is same, but with additional TX capability into MARS and GMRS bands. In fact, from the 467 upper GMRS freqs all the way through 520.  Just taken note. I got mine from Amazon. Power meter shows a firm 10 watts plus except 12 watts at 144 and 440.

Not sure about the UV-5RM, but the AR-5RM will also RX/TX the 220 and RX the Air Bands.

I just installed my first GMRS mobile radio, and yes (forgive me radio gods), I have been kerchunking some of the local repeaters to see if I can reach them (but at least I do it at a time of day when there is usually no comms traffic).  Usually when I reach a repeater it sends back a 1 or 2 second transmission that ends with my squelch tail.  However, a couple of repeaters are responding (or I think it’s their response) with a really short transmission.  It’s so short that if you bat your eye you’ll miss the green light indicating receipt of a transmission.  There’s no squelch tail and really no audible transmission that I can hear, just the green light.  What causes this different kind of response from the repeater?  Do you think I’m actually hitting the repeater?

You hear the tail you hit it.  Sometimes if its been silent on the channel for a bit and you kerchunk it, the repeater calls out its Ident after you break - sometimes its "off tone" so you might miss hearing it.

Sometimes, like my local repeater, it will ident on tone then repeat it off tone.  Dont ask me why, its how its set up.

Kill your RX tone and try again and see if its actually TX'ing something.

Or you don’t want to hear every kid or Walmart or restaurant in the area on simplex.

All the Walmarts in this region use the "Blue Dot" (154.570) freq.

Sometimes I would sit in the parking lot and prank em by making a transmission "Stockman needed at register 5 for a large item carryout assist"

I generally leave my RX tone off as well, but I have a system where if it gets "noisy" I can switch quick to the same channel with the tone set.

For instance I have my local repeater on CH 038 RX tone off, but if I get too much other chatter, I go to 538 with the tone set.  All the correct RX tone channels are 5XX, XX being the channel I need tones with. CH 046 repeater is 546 for example.

I was at a gas station last year, pumping gas, when I heard my buddy call me on the radio...

As a side, when i moved out here from podunk Virginia my first job was a ramp rat for Fed Ex at SeaTac.  One shitty night we had a late plane and were doing the local sorting onto trucks that would go get resorted for local delivery.  Im in the back of a 20 foot truck with an extendable feed belt and I have to scan the barcode as i grab it off the belt and then stack it.

I scanned one item and then the system went down.

20 minute reboot (at that time, slow comps) then. So we got a quick break, and i popped out a side door for a quick smoke.

We are already on the high security "air" side so this door wasnt really watched, but not to be normally used, anyway...

System back up, and I want to do my job right, so I rescan the last package and the system dies again.

    Another smoke break!

I set that package aside so when were back up and chooching along about an hour later i want another smoke, so I scan it and boom.

I did that 2 more times till we get pulled aside and told not to scan items from LL Bean (they had a funky barcode and package at the time).

Im doing quick glances at the LL Bean item off the side in the truck, hoping they didnt see it.  They didnt, but just stacked it with the rest and called it good for the night at that point.

I was at a gas station last year, pumping gas, when I heard my buddy call me on the radio.  I reached in and grabbed the mic... completely forgot my 300w amp was on (feeding a 7dBi gain antenna) and when I keyed up, I crashed 3 fuel pumps at the same time... like screens turn off and the systems did a soft restart.  I thought for sure I broke them.

Reminds me of a friend who was showing off his wireless security system.  I did a quick google and found the licensed freq for that company.

Told him i could get in, and he set the alarm, so i put the freq in my UV-5R, keyed up, and went through his whole house blinding the system.

Door sensors, proximity sensors all blinded by the signal.. and or Emissions.
