  1. Not correct. the TD-H8 is like the H3- can be sest for GMRS, Ham, or "NORMAL" (open) But if he has it in HAM... yeah it might scream at him trying to transmit in a GMRS frequency
  2. I have a AT-779UV and really do like it... Only thing I did have to with it it is widen the microphone hole in the handset and adjust the mic gain. the way it came the modulation was pretty low. and yes you can configure it to cover GMRS frequencies if you want.
  3. I knew that GMRS used to be $70... I paid for it once well over a decade ago and then let it lapse. Came back a few years ago and was happy to see it dropped to $35. I didn't know that Armature licenses were no cost before. Really? Interesting.
  4. The biggest question is ... why is GMRS "licensed"? I mean it is a "fishing license" you just pay it, not test, and there you go. But unlike a fishing license there is no limit to break. What is the point of the FCC charging for GMRS "licenses" (I have one and had no qualms about paying it... but still wonder why).
  5. One thing that turned me off of the GMRS-50V2 was that the radio's firmware does not allow you to save the exact same frequency to multiple memory channels with different privacy tones (CTCSS/DCS) using the radio's keypad alone. For instance you want to have two repeaters that use the same frequency (duplex) pair but different tones... I don't know why this is. But I have read that you create a codeplug via Chip or other computer software and upload it to the radio with two saved channels using the same frequency but different tones. So, it might be non issue for some people. The other thing.. I didn't like its smallish and data crowded display screen. But that might also just be me.
  6. what we really needed was the snow pack in the mountains and it was too warm to stick it seems. It was also rather grey today.
  7. Sun finally came out today.
  8. Hmm ok.. but the screenshot you showed earlier of your CHIRP screen seemed correct. Unless you mean you just had the wrong frequency to start with. hope you get it working... or if you have other questions, I hope we can help more.
  9. Not sure what that means... duplex is always +5 Mhz on GMRS.
  10. That is why I said: "What you have should in theory work but maybe you have other noise in the area on the open frequency? Not sure. " Thought that if he is getting other local simplex transmissions on the frequency, it might be interfering with him hearing the repeater. But yes the tone only would get everything on receive.
  11. Try using TSQL in the Tone mode... and 141.3 in the Tone Squelch instead of how you have it. If 141.3 is the correct in and out tone for the repeater that should work. What you have should in theory work but maybe you have other noise in the area on the open frequency? Not sure. or could be you just dont have a good line of sight to the repeater itself.
  12. Most likely adding a different antenna will help. Typically the ones that comes with low cost radios are not the best. It also may matter if you are indoors or not, and if you have a lot of obstructions between yourself and your friend's radio... or the repeaters. Line of sight is key in GMRS. the clearer the line of sight, the further and stronger the signal will be. In an urban area inside a car or home, with buildings and other obstructions, yes your signal will have less reach. experiment with them from different locations. Try to find places where you can get a clearer line of sight between yourself and the other radio if possible.
  13. It is working for me... what browser and device are you using to view the site?
  14. I agree. I guess they think they are making it simpler by just numbering them... and I guess for some users who ONLY use Midland radios (Brand loyalty?) it would be easy to say tone 10... but yeah, nobody else refers to tones or codes like that. My first GMRS Hts were Midland... and well.. I don't buy that brand anymore for that on particular reason.
  15. Hi Johnny, I am not sure if you are looking for a specific club... but the Mesa Crest Repeater Club has 5 repeaters that cover the Los Angels, Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Great club, fun helpful people and fun club activities too. here is the website to the club: https://mcrcsocal.com You can find out about the club there, and there is a video that walks you through how to become a member through our club via myGMRS.
