Logan5 got a reaction from pfactor in gmrs antenna for repeater
I used this antenna for a couple years. exceptional omni performance. I think it is non-tunable, but comes pre-tuned for 467. It comes collapsed connected by coax that slides inside as you assemble it. It flexes quite a bit in 30 to 40 miles winds, I would expect damage in winds exceeding 60mph. I can not give a better recommendation for an omni as decided to switch to a yagi and a rotor.

Funny lol. Yeah, I'm still upgrading some hardware such as bolts and guy wires and replacing and adding on coaxial cables and other antennas, so, I didn't want to waste my time putting my current antennas back up when I would be taking the mast down a few times. Maybe by the end of this month everything should be taken care of.

Logan5 reacted to JLeikhim in simplex user, using travel tone on repeater input frequency
Years ago, the FCC approved maritime "port operations" on UHF channels with non standard repeater pairs. some of these operations are simplex as well. It is all supposed to be low power.(2 watts) Some of the frequencies are in the GMRS band. It is not unusual for cruise ships to be on these frequencies.
If you call the ship on the radio, be polite and simply indicate interference and request the vessel name and or to talk to the captain to get company contact information. Be sure to ID your GMRS station properly. Use simplex, don't use their input frequency! Mostly I would listen for clues as to what ship it is coming from and contact the IT or Telecom director at the Cruise company by writing a letter (and CC your local FCC field office) and simply request the use an alternate tone.

I went with this galvanized swivel clamp on eBay, $19.99 free shipping new.

Logan5 reacted to LongBeachREACT in simplex user, using travel tone on repeater input frequency
Replying to them by transmitting simplex on the input frequency is illegal, but so is what they are doing, which could disrupt emergency communications, so I think that you could have the repeater transmit back to them on the input frequncy to give them a verbal cease and desist.

Is the FCC's live internet broadcast of the part 95 rules reform archived so that it can be watched later? And if so what is the link? Thank you.

Logan5 got a reaction from WQWI871 in Need help newbie
I do not know your particular radios. but you should consider CHIRP programing software. Is included in many if not most linux distros and is a free download for windows products. When you obtain your repeater info, you will understand the repeater listens on 467 and Transmits on 462 that is the common repeater off set. so your radio should be set to listen on 462 and transmit on 467. a PL or Dpl/DCS tone may be used to activate the repeater, you may also use this or another tone to limit noise of other users on different tone. Make sure you are within range of said repeater and use a mobile or roof top antenna for better results.

I know the two btech mobile radios you mentioned are programed similar to the other baofeng radios. I can try to help, but, unfortunately, I may need more details of what the problem is. I understand you're not too familiar with programing, but, without specific questions, I could only advise checking some YouTube videos or the operators manual. I have seen some programing YouTube videos and I think the baofeng website has manuals.

Yes. The minimum power necessary to carry out the communication.

Logan5 reacted to rdunajewski in What's permitted close to the Canadian Border?
Line A and Line C restrictions were removed from the GMRS rules proposed in the WT 10-119 Report & Order. Next Thursday is the FCC meeting to consider the R&O. GMRS operators still are not allowed to communicate with foreign stations, so I asked the FCC to exclude Canada from this restriction just like they did for CB radio in the same R&O. Basically there is the same service on the Canadian side (slightly different rules, no licenses) so there's no actual interference anymore. Back in the day these frequencies were for public safety and/or business use in Canada so it would have caused problems. Now, it's almost the same service and type of users so there's no reason to keep the ban in effect.

Logan5 reacted to rdunajewski in want to register but no call sign.
The forum registration is tied to your myGMRS account. So in order to create a forum account, you would have a full myGMRS account as well with access to the repeater listing information.
We opened up guest access to allow new and prospective members to be able to ask questions and decide whether they wanted to participate in the community. Once they have a valid GMRS license they are free to sign up and have full forum access.
To answer the poster's question about contacting a repeater owner, you may look up the repeater listing and click on the owner's username. That will bring up their profile with the mailing address attached to their GMRS license with the FCC. We don't expose their email address to non-members for obvious security reasons. In fact, the only reason we show the address is because it's public record with the FCC, so it's already available to the public.

Yeah, that's it. And I apologize if my last response was blunt. I was just trying to say that just because we all have "boundaries" of what we should do, that doesn't mean we have to exceed those boundaries. If the post creator has questions for the repeater owner, I'd advise to either make sure they check if the owner has any contact information provided, perhaps try to post the repeater (as I have seen a couple posts here, actually) and someone may reach out to them, or, if someone licensed is in the area of that repeater, perhaps they can try to reach the owner on the post creators' behalf. Those are a few ideas to help without exceeding our privacy boundaries.

Logan5 reacted to pfactor in Another Newbie Saying Hello
Radio is up and running now and hitting three repeaters with crisp clarity. I had a programming glitch which I need to shout out to Gary, (ATL-60, WQYU407) for taking time away from his already busy schedule and keeping me focused.
Thank you sir!

I just submitted my comment to the FCC, just waiting for them to approve it and post it on the site. Then I'll share the link. In the meantime, I'm attaching it here so everyone can read what I submitted.
I found some inconsistencies in their Report & Order so I tried to drive the point home on a few issues. Overall I am very happy with the rules they proposed as they're a lot simpler when you consider how bad the current set is. They also were thinking about destroying GMRS as we know it, and they backpedaled on virtually all of those ideas.
I re-read their report and they seemed to use the survey I submitted back in 2010 in their decision to continue allowing the repeaters. I think they weren't aware there we so many still in use, and over the past several years there have been many more added to this site. So thank you to all the repeater owners who posted here, that definitely made a difference!
I don't think they will really consider many changes if any this close to the meeting (May 18th), but they did release the draft ahead of time so I wanted to fight as hard as I could to sway them in any way possible. If they were going this far with digital data, there was little reason not to allow digital voice in my opinion. Also, the data emissions were limited to bubblepack radios anyway, which is completely unfair.
Hopefully we get some of what I asked for, but either way I'm content that the service hasn't been completely trashed like it almost was.
I urge everyone else to post a comment, however short it is. The FCC did listen to your prior comments, and the proceeding is still technically open. Feel free to reference my comment, agree or disagree with what I had to say (but please consider the reasons I gave for my opinions before outright disagreeing with them).
I believe we have until May 8th to have our comments read by the FCC for this meeting. There seems to be a 10-day sunshine period where they won't consider any new filings before the meeting. So please post a comment ASAP.
Click on "+ New Filing" on the left side of the page. Fill out your contact information, optionally your callsign, type is "Comment" or "Reply To Comments", and attach a document (Word, PDF, etc) with your comments:

AH, nothing like a good book.
digital for text and location, so I can use a digital capable radio but only for this part.
glad to see they are going to separate the FRS from "us" . that will be a relief from all the crap around here.

Logan5 reacted to AA3RT in how many gmrs licenses in your state?
I realize that this topic has been dormant for some time however I just received my GMRS license and was curious as to how many licenses there are in the District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia area as I reside in southern Maryland but am close to both DC and VA.
Active licenses only:
District of Columbia: 81
Maryland: 938
Virginia: 1673
