Logan5 got a reaction from BK in First FRS area post
we could discus how the FCC should have never allowed the bubble pak radio manufactures to include FRS freq's on GMRS radios to begin with. or vicea versa, FRS created the need for radio manufactures to included molded non removable antennas on their radios. I consider the non removable antenna part of FRS to be the most limiting factor, any radio that includes FRS frequency's can not have a removable antenna . FRS at a half of a watt into a "tuned gain" antenna would not be too bad.

given a choice between 600 or 1/2" take the 1/2".
have you ever worked w/1/2"? its not as bad as you think but as w/any cable when retracting a tower you have to be careful w/it.

We enjoyed your role as LT. DAN in the movie "Forrest Gump"... we see that you have been promoted since then to CaptDan...
P/S - Gary Sinise, who actually played Lt. Dan in the 1994 movie as well as having a major role in 'CSI New York', is a fine bass guitar player and tours with "The Lt. Dan Band". He and I share a commonality - we both play bass guitar and we both have owned Fender and Cort basses.
Now, if there was just some way to attach a mobile GMRS antenna to a Fender Jazz Bass, I'd have it made.

Dan - Thanks for the feedback. Rich is aware of the fact that the forum needs a little fine tuning, yet, and he does that when he can... however, as I understand it, he is working over 60 hours a week and things like this may take some time.
For the time being, please bookmark the main site in your bookmarks or favorites file and hit that in your browser if you have to go back or simply open another tab and be in both places at once.

During a field operations briefing in the upper midwest last week, an FBI spokesperson told a gathering of agents, "Once we find Jimmy Hoffa's body, then and only then can we concentrate on finding Jimmy Buffett's lost shaker of salt."
He was immediately transfered to a remote Alaskan outpost.

Just now figured how to get into both my networks it took me a long time to figure it out.
Plus doing it after I had a good nights sleep helped calmer heads do work best, had to
put my thinking cap on.
Thanks for the response

After a little research, it looks as if the battery for the KG-UVD1P and the rest of the Wouxun radios of that body size are the same. Makes interchangability in the field a little easier.

Speaking of combo radios -
I just picked up a Cobra PR-950DX in excellent condition at a garage sale. No corrosion in the battery compartment, no scratches on the case and the belt clip is still there. It even had the original owner's manual. Two watt output on the GMRS frequncies and I tested it in an urban area and got 2.7 miles to a Kenwood 4 watt portable. CTCSS codes are accurate and frequency stability seems to be right on the money according to my UHF frequency counter. I know what you are wondering... how much was it? --- How does $ 2.00 sound?

I'm running about 40 watts into 30 ft. of RG-213. (Shack is on the 2nd floor of our house.) The antenna is a Comet commercial antenna with 9dBi gain.
I could probably get the antenna up another 10 ft or so (it's about 25-28 ft now) but I was impatient and didn't want to wait for assistance.
I run a BPQ32 BBS with ports on HF and 6 meters. Now that was a learning curve! The GMRS repeater will hopefully give some local non-ham friends a way of staying in touch with family w/o commercial infrastructure.

Logan5 reacted to SteveH in MURS pre programmed equipment
I have a couple of Dakota Alert base station radios. One is currently at my brother-in-law's place, across the cove about 2 miles from here. The radios put out a full 2 watts per my meter. I can cover our little town pretty well with an outside j-pole antenna.
Since I do a lot of digital stuff on the ham bands, an appealing feature of MURS is that you can do digital modes. I just audio couple between the PC and radio's speakers & microphones. If I read the rules correctly, you can also encrypt. The telemetry units that use MURS (e.g. http://www.raveon.com/rv_m3_m.html) used encrypted digital transmissions.
In our area, there is almost no MURS traffic (and not a whole lot more GMRS).

I programmed it for 446.000 MHz and it worked. I'm not sure how wideband the ducky is. Now for the Part 97 on a Part 95 radio debate!

Rich - We appreciate the efforts that you have done lately to supply a solid platform for the Forum.
While everyone will have to follow your instructions in the advisory pinned above this post of mine, it will be a much better place to exchange info from now on.
Thanks again...

Iv'e seen these too, so I am thinking a programming cable is available. Without it, only a new user sticking to a contained group will find them useful. You need to be able to setup your own programming. PL's , Etc.

Logan5 reacted to Shriekmau in New to GMRS
From what I understand through reading, the vessel must be larger than a certain size to require a license. There are even notes about using the frequencies inland which indicate it is OK as long as you are not stepping on the toes of those using the channels for official purposes.
Don't know how accurate that is. The FCC website doesn't state one way or the other.
-
Logan5 reacted to Billy in New GMRS Specific HT
I bet that if an FCC check is done they are probably both Part 90/95 accepted. I will do some research on that. I am also sure that the generic Wouxum software would work. The speaker mic and accessories use the Kenwood jack as do most of the Chinese radios. I was just happy to see a new offering. Shows that people have a renewed interest in radio lately and I bet Wouxum did the market research prior to offering this model. I know that is the case locally. There are quite a few emergency repeater groups forming, Ham and GMRS.
-
Logan5 reacted to PastorGary in New GMRS Specific HT
Just an observation, but the external speaker/mic looks to be identical to the one used on the model KG-UVD1P ---- IF that IS the case, then the programming cable for the dual band model might work with this one... However, I'm just going by what I saw in the accessories list on the website - not with actual hands-on testing.

Billy,
Thanks for the info,I had looked at that one a few weeks ago and was going to post about it.I also found one some time last year with the Wouxun name on it that was part 95 also but I have not been able to find it again,it looks like the Powerwerx is a re-branded copy of that one except it has factory default set of pl tones.
I am betting if you find the original Wouxun branded radio with the software it will program the Powerwerx also, good find and if you try one out let us know how it works,we need more radios available that are Part 95 certified. It seems funny with the proposed rules changes of over 3 yrs ago that GMRS is gaining more steam and being used more since more info is now online for people to read about.
The only thing I still do not like is the people who refuse to buy the license or say they can't justify the cost instead most say get a ham license.I look at it this way GMRS covers the whole family,a ham license covers only 1 person and not every family member wants to become a ham.As far as justifying the cost, eat one less meal at a fancy restaurant for one month that should about cover the cost...Have a good day

Well, now - that's an interestiong situation...
All you have to do is glue on a couple trebble hooks and an "O" ring and turn it into a surface trolling Musky lure. When a Musky strikes, you can hear it on the other radio that is still in the boat... :D
