When I lived in California one of my buddies lived in an Apartment but had access to a balcony on the top floor.  He rigged up some EMT (electrical conduit) tubing which he attached to the railing using large hose clamps and attached a Roll up J-pole to it with some zipties.  Worked pretty well we could communicate easily and lived around 20 miles apart.  The rules in his apartment complex forbade such things but he figured it was cheap and easy to take down if needed.  No one ever noticed it though the whole time he lived there.

    Hi
Can you be more specific on what unusual questions are being asked?

I don't think linking GMRS repeaters is trying to make GMRS something it is not and will never be. We have been linking machines for a few years now and its been great. It has expanded the area of coverage from 30 miles to 3 states with the ability to connect to several other states. If you have friends and family in a different city or state you could still enjoy using GMRS with them by simply linking a repeater in each area together. The owner of this site has a nice system in place, check this out https://link.mygmrs.com/map

Funny no matter what Forum linking comes up in it always starts a POTS debate, one that's been beat to death. Nothing I do is over POTS, in fact the Asterisk server is sitting on optical fiber and the nodes on dedicated point to point connections or cable. As an IT professional of 25 years I can assure you DSL is not POTS. Unless you are doing an auto patch to a POTS line or using dial up for your internet chances are your internet has been been off the last mile for years.

    Hi all,
Maybe im stupid, Ive been told that before, but I don't see a problem. GMRS is a radio service for people that want a family or a friendly radio service. People that just want to pick up a mike and talk.

Why does everyone want to make this into something it is not and never will be.

If you need something more than what it is, get an amature license. I dont have an amature license and Im happy with it.

Wow, you got me ranting. SORRY.

Do you have a balcony? I’m in an apartment, but have a balcony. I just ran LMR400 (several) and put my antennas out there, lol. I figured it was better to ask for forgiveness than pernission.

Landlord did ask what they were and I explained amateur radio and GMRS. (I used angle telling her it’d still work if power and all else lost, which would as I have backup power.) She thought it was neat and even asked if I could setup some wireless bridges on rooftop (two buildings here) for their IP cameras. Easy peasy! Hoping to get brownie points and maybe sweet talk her into letting me set my antennas up there, lol. I’d put them in center roof, where can’t be seen from ground, so nobody could see, else might be seen as “tenant favoritism”.

Even though, my landlord loves me, anyway. Mainly because I’m a veteran and she loves all veterans.

    I’m not complaining. :-)
