  1. It may not. Load the new CPS and connect to the radio and see if you can download and save the radio's plug. This works with some other radios that get new software. I
  2. My recommendation for good quality coax made to order is The Wireman (thewireman.com) out of South Carolina.
  3. 40 watts vs 20 watts just means your signal had twice the RF density at the repeater.
  4. Wattage increases the amount of RF in the same area but does not increase range to any appreciable amount with UHF radios. I have two antennas I use for mobile communications, a Comet 2X4SR and a Signal Stalker from Signal Stick. The Signal Stalker is the shorter of the two and performs very well in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina. The Comet is used when I'm in more of a fixed location as its slight gain helps.
  5. From my experience with two of the units, they just fail because they are cheap junk.
  6. An alternative for a "higher tier" box ready repeater is the BTech unit. The alternative is to purchase a used commercial unit that has been retuned to a GMRS channel..
  7. 300/350 = 86cm
  8. Retevis has models marked as "commercial," but almost any BaoFeng 888 model (no display) works. You can get the 888s for $9.40 each if you buy 10. https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=fdae2ed02726d8dcb08335e22fc46878f5a9bed62bd4815cee9fd6f2c849ebcfJmltdHM9MTc2MDkxODQwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=2b433dc8-0414-6e56-0a86-2ee605c26f18&u=a1L3Nob3AvcHJvZHVjdHBhZ2U_cT1CRis4ODhzJmZpbHRlcnM9c2NlbmFyaW8lM2ElMjIxNyUyMitnVHlwZSUzYSUyMjMlMjIrZ0lkJTNhJTIyU181RTI3OTMzQzI5QzBBMEFERkEyNEZDQzM3MUMzMUNDQSUyMitnSWRIYXNoJTNhJTIyMzQ5MDM5ODYxNiUyMitnR2xvYmFsT2ZmZXJJZHMlM2ElMjIyNDgzMDg5NTIzOTQlMjIrQXVjQ29udGV4dEd1aWQlM2ElMjIwJTIyK0dyb3VwRW50aXR5SWQlM2ElMjJTXzVFMjc5MzNDMjlDMEEwQURGQTI0RkNDMzcxQzMxQ0NBJTIyK05vblNwb25zb3JlZE9mZmVyJTNhJTIyVHJ1ZSUyMiZwcm9kdWN0cGFnZT10cnVlJkZPUk09U0hQUERQJmJyb3dzZT10cnVl&ntb=1
  9. You can also put a small disc of steel to the top of your cart and use a mag mount antenna base. Hillman 6-in x 18-in Cold Rolled Steel Solid Sheet Metal 11758 at Lowes.com
  10. The ARRL is telling their coordinators to leave the field blank on the 605 and when the applicant can get an FRN submit the form. I think WCARS-VEC is doing the same, allowing the exam but holding the 605 until the FRN is presented.
  11. @TNFrank: As an aid in building a DMR code plug keep everything about one repeater together before adding another. And yes, each repeater needs an entry for every talk group on that repeater. This means you need a TG 4000 for each one as well as common channels i.e. 3104 and 3102. It also helps if you can leave a blank (empty) row between different groups like repeaters in different areas or zones.
  12. At the antenna store. It was an option.
  13. You can get small sheets of steel plate at most home improvement stores. I use a 2' x 2' sheet of steel under my magmount in my closet.
  14. Almost any antenna can be strung up. You'll need to use a nonconducting string or rope. Fishing line like Spiderwire is best.
  15. I had a Star Duster back then.
  16. Chances are you will not be able to maintain contact. GMRS requires line-of-sight or a clear path between the stations. Hills will block all radio signals in the unlicensed frequencies.
  17. I think that issue of the voltage spike was corrected a while back but I'm relying on heresay.
  18. Exactly!!! Your FRN is a REQUIRED entry on the application.
  19. Do a search using your FRN. It will show any activity associated with the number. You can call the FCC and also ask them to check the status of any paperwork in process.

Literraly, there is a TON of options available. I recommend handhelds to start with but be aware they aren't as good as the advertising says. With winter coming on, NOAA isn't a bad option. To begin with, I suggest you look at the program CHIRP and pick radios from their list of compatibles. Next, do a little review on YouTube for some of the ones you have chosen for their reviews. You can come back here for help on setting up the units you have decided on, but do a little research on basic FRS (Family Radio Service) channels and their structure along with GMRS as it will answer a lot of questions out of the gate.11.
  21. My primary VHF/UHF base radio is the Connect Systems CS800D Plus with the BFD panel extended to my desk. The Anytone does not have a detachable faceplate (and no plans to introduce a radio with one) while with the CS it is standard. You need to use the CPS for programming as RT Systems doesn't support it. Overall, I like it better than the ICOM 5100 now relegated to a backup role. CSI is primarily focused on their newest M17 radios but promises many of the additional things promised for the CS800 are still coming. I looked very closely at the 578 but decided the CS800 will be my mobile when I install it in my ride.
  22. What happens if the lifetime holder dies or gets out of the hobby? With a required renewal call signs can be recycled.
  23. I don't think a blanket "does not apply" is true. The FCC has many rules about city regulations and antennas so it would behoove you to do a lot more investigation before stating the law/restriction doesn't apply in your case.
