If your antennas are tuned well and the system is working right, then most of the time an antenna isn’t going to reflect much wattage and will have similar output to what a dummy load would. But if you’ve got a shoddy system with a sketchy antenna tune you could easily lose watts before they get turned into rf as they simply wouldn’t make it out of the antenna but would return to the transmitter in the form of heat.

I can’t hit repeaters 10 miles from me but I can hit a couple others that are 25+. I can talk to my north/northwest but talking south/southeast is impossible. Those Appalachian foothills are a bugger. Seems to me 462 mhz doesn’t work as well in the woods as 27mhz

CB antenna behind GMRS antenna (radiation pattern affects?)
GrouserPad replied to GrouserPad's question in Technical Discussion
CB absolutely does require grounplane and its radiation pattern is affected by it as well. But I was curious how the two difffering frequencies would see eachother mounted that close...... be cool if I could run both like that with no ill effects. I figure I'll have to do some real world testing. -
CB antenna behind GMRS antenna (radiation pattern affects?)
GrouserPad posted a question in Technical Discussion
I've always preferred to run my antennas center of the cab to give me the most omni-directional signal as possible. I have a pickup truck and was thinking of running my gmrs magmount 5/8over5/8 antenna infront of a base loaded wilson 2000 cb antenna. There would be about 1.5ft between the antennas loading coils. Does anyone know if this setup will cause one of the antennas to become a reflector of the other and make me extremely directional? What other effects might this cause if any? I'm more concerned about their proximity to one another negatively influencing my gmrs range, as gmrs is what I use to do coms with my home base often. And unfortunately it seems I'm always on the fringes of gmrs service so I'm pretty concerned about the negative effects if there is some. CB is only for interstate road trips and takes a backseat to my gmrs all other times. If this is more in-depth than gmrs ever was ment to be I apologize and you can leave this thread to die in the weeds of the forum. I know I tend to get a bit obsessive about details. I apologize. -

From just listening I believe the only users of gmrs near me are ham radio operators. Which is cool!

I use it to talk to my kids and family when I'm out and about town. Keeps things fun and the kids like it. They holler at me on the home base all the time and ask when im coming home, what im doing and if ill pick them up some ice-cream. Is this the proper use of GMRS? Because thats what I'm using it for. I could use a phone but whats the fun in that?

TYT TH-9800 clicking noise on 2m transmit
GrouserPad replied to Wayfarer's question in Technical Discussion
Ive got a chinese radio that also is right side deaf. I can go to one side and kerchunk repeaters and get all kinds of response from them. But if i go to the other side and kerchunk them, I get no receive back on that right side. It sucks because it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. If I switched the freqs to the same on both sides and key up on the "deaf" side it will transmit fine and the other side of the radio will pull in the rx perfect but the right sidee i tx'ed from will not. I sent it back. We will see how the customer support is. So far so good and good quick response for return shipping labels and what not. So I'm hopeful. -
Nice! After messing with it on my cell I think I’ll have to fiddle with it on a home computer. The site is hard to navigate with an iPhone.

Can you enlighten me as to what app that is showing your “radio path study” ? Looks cool.

Doesn’t upset me a bit either. Wish him the best with his radio and I hope he figures out the issue. -

I was told by the amature operators on our local gmrs repeater that you aren’t allowed to use that type of radio on gmrs. -
Well.... I did it.... passed my Tech a month ago

Base station set up with a Btech GMRS 50V2 with a Btech 50w Pro
GrouserPad replied to WSGU764's topic in Equipment Reviews
Absolute most I can get here is 7 miles. Omni base at 40ft transmitting to my pickup with a 5/8 over 5/8 magnet mount. These rolling hills and forests kill gmrs. -
My scenario is two Ocean Kg1000plus radios. I only communicate between my base(home) and my pickup truck. Both using the kg1000plus. Would you guys reccomend turning the companding feature on both radios? Ive read a bit about companding as it compresses the audio and the other radio expands it when received and as a result it helps rid some of the extra noise and hiss from the transmission. Curious what you more knowledgeable guys would do in this scenario. Thanks.

KG-1000G Plus 50W or BTECH UV-50X3 Tri Band 50W?
GrouserPad replied to WRPL862's topic in Equipment Reviews
I’ve got two kg1000g plus’s. Each on a dummy load tx 46 to 54 watts depending on the frequency when measured on a surecom102. Pretty awesome radios. But I do need a scanner to cover the analog frequencies I can’t scan with the kg1000. Although I was able to put most of the Air and Rail frequencies into the kg1000 which is rad af. -
TX'ing on channels 15 through 22 on simplex ok?
GrouserPad replied to GrouserPad's topic in General Discussion
Perfect. Thank you. I realized what I thought was an issue isn’t an issue at all as the channels I was referring to using aren’t “designated” repeater channels to begin with. Although as I understand it these channels can sometimes have active repeaters on them. So I need to be aware of that. Thank you. -
TX'ing on channels 15 through 22 on simplex ok?
GrouserPad replied to GrouserPad's topic in General Discussion
I realize now, that the channels 15-22 are not pre-programmed gmrs repeater channels. When I made my initial post I for some silly reason thought they were repeater channels set with an offset. So essentially this ENTIRE thread is pointless. -

Thank you for your reply. I guess I was kinda confused and now you mention this it all makes sense. I even pulled up the gmrs frequency chart and managed to forget this simple fact you have mentioned. Big DUH moment for me I guess. Thanks again guys.
