  1. Not sure why all the concern about phones. If you are there someone likely recorded you on their phone and has already uploaded it to social media.
  2. Sometimes it takes a bit for your license to show up on FCC database. Give it FCC a day and try again.
  3. Freaked my little sis out so much, and she didn't want to tell our parents, she slept on the floor in my room for days. Then they made the sequels.
  4. Welcome to the new world of written communication brought to you by young people with limited education.
  5. Oh great crappy 80's movies will be on all day. Time to make popcorn .
  6. Most folks seem to have no idea what GMRS is. Anytime someone asks about my antenna on my truck the think it's CB.
  7. The sheriff didn't do a 180. If they had been in charge from the start it would have been squashed quickly. Totally different mindset between LAPD and the L A County Sheriff.
  8. Here's the problem with that scenario. This is Los Angeles (I am a life long resident) where currently LAPD and most other police agencies no longer try to arrest criminals. There are lots of reasons why, but basically the citizens voted for this. So even if they can identify a criminal, unless it's a murder(and then it's iffy) the cops don't even bother to respond.
  9. During WWII the Germans used DF equipment to locate resistance radios. But the resistance also used radios to ensnare folks into traps.
  10. Faraday bag doesn't care if your phone is on/off/battery removed. As an aside, late third generation Toyota Tacomas had a fob to open and start the truck. Someone figured out the fob was constantly sending out it's signal unless steps were taken to shut it down. Didn't take crooks long to figure out how to intercept the signal, clone your fob and then just drive away in your truck. I'm pretty religious about disabling my fob, but sometimes even I forget. So, it automatically goes in a small faraday pouch.
  11. There are lots of power supply options today. Jump packs, as I mentioned, can do much more than jump start a car. I use small lithium units for things like my insulin refrigerator. Decades of using frozen media to keep it cool ended when we get usable/portable power supplies. For all the scare tactics about lithium, it's a heck of a lot less potentially dangerous than the tank of gas you drive around all day.
  12. I didn't pick up anything on the repeaters that cover the downtown are and my own. If they are using simplex they'd have to be in a high rise to have line of site with me. So I didn't pick up anything with my radio set to scan. But, I am on the coast so it's a few miles away and if they were on the ground they are in urban canyons. About the only thing happening is some idiot transmitting rap music on 462.575. But we get idiots like that from time to time.
  13. I have Dewalt jump packs in each of my vehicles. These are models with lights, air pump, etc. I already have an adapter made up to power my electric jack. Using the adapter it works well to power my radio. Now this isn't really the most convenient power source due to the weight. But jump packs do supply in an emergency.
  14. Well not exactly a haunted radio tower (although there is an early 1900's radio antenna on top of it), but the old Pacific Theaters building on Hollywood Blvd. is definitely haunted on the roof. Story is someone jumped off the buildings roof to commit suicide. I got the contract to take care of the cooling and heating systems located on the roof. Stuff happened. Things moved without obvious external effect. Sounds (including a scream) would burst forth without cause. Then there was the just freaky way you felt up there. Maybe if there are abandoned radio tower around, they are abandoned for good reason.
  15. Oh come on now! What was it some sort of play Jeep like a YJ or worse yet one of those JK's? Real Jeepers know real very extremely manly Jeeps start with CJ
  16. Fortunately, since I retired I will never have to deal with Mac again. I'm an old DOS dinosaur (like DOS 1.0). I lamented the origin of Windows. Then again I really hate the two, three and four step delete processes that have come about because folks did stupid duff like deleting all the files on an entire hard drive.
  17. Fair enough. I can see the advantage of being able to use one software for multiple manufacturers radios. I'll probably get it and play with it. One thing for sure the instructions have got to be better than the OEM software (really lack of instructions) for this radio. But I'm sort of used to everything from no instructions to chinglish to well written ones.
  18. The DB20 OEM software is pretty simple. What does CHIRP software do with this radio that the OEM software won't? I spent years programming control equipment. Every manufacturer had their own proprietary software. But once you learn the software none were significantly easier than the rest. So far it seems the same way with radios.
  19. Showing respect for someone who passed isn't weird. The world could use more like you.
  20. Well, that's a neater setup than mine. I'm currently using a small backpack for a DB20-G. It's got all the needfuls, (radio, HT's & charger, 110v to 12v transformer, programming cable, and mag mount) except an antenna. I'm looking into a ghost type. I do have an antenna permanently mounted on my truck. Mine isn't so much for portability but more for security. They have been hitting vehicles nightly in my area, so everything comes in at night. I'd really like to mount the radio in the truck, but I doubt it would last a week before some "individual" smashed a window and took it. My currnet mount is a very clunky cup holder mount. Your box set up looks good. And darned if Harbor Freight isn't just a few of miles away.
  21. I think what we need are two lawyers on the forum. They can both read the rules then explain them in layman's terms. After which they can spend eternity arguing whose interpretation is correct (yea, two lawyers can't ever agree on what laws mean, how can we mere mortals).
  22. Stateside things were tight and we didn't have kids yet. But when I was stationed in Spain we even managed to save some. The exchange rate was very favorable, unlike Italy, England and especially Germany. Honestly, that was my best duty station. All the fun and no one was shooting at us. Although, it did come darned close a few times. The ETA really didn't like American servicemen.
  23. Goo heavens, you made that much. I remember my first months take home pay was &147.00. But by '75 I was an E-5, married and getting sep rats and quarters.
  24. Except I then see it descending into to mess that CB is today.
