  1. Being in compliance with the law doesn't necessarily mean you are morally and ethically correct. Man's laws are often in direct contravention to what is right and just. To put it another way, we have a "legal" system, not a "justice" system.
  2. True it's not a crime. But it is unethical and possibly immoral. Folks doing things "just because they can" without regard to others rights and personal property just makes for unnecessary grief. And as mom would say "it's just plain rude". So ask yourself this question, were you raised that way?
  3. Dude, you're from California. It's getting harder and harder to find real boobies here any more.
  4. I have set up sort of an network in my neighborhood. Now mind you geographically it's an area of about 4 blocks north to south and 6 blocks east to west. Not a large area. In addition it is a long established neighborhood with a lot of older residents who have been here for decades. It's a mix of Los Angeles City and unincorporated Los Angeles County. Jurisdictional issues are fairly frequent with both agencies at times saying it wasn't their area. Sadly, typical for SoCal today. This was motivated by a home invasion not long ago. The mother and child were home alone in the evening. It took the LAPD over an hour to respond. She did get a hold of a neighbor a few doors down after about 10 minutes on 911 hold. By then the invaders had left. The idea is simple. Folks have GMRS handhelds. We have a dedicated frequency. There are a lot of retired folks who can monitor the frequency. There currently isn't any established roster of who and when. But turns out there are more than enough to have it covered 24/7. Had our neighbor just called on a radio there could have had several "experienced" guys there in a minute or two at most. Most folks who are on the network have bought their own HT's. For others several of us have donated HT's. Obviously not everyone is onboard. You still have folks who insist that the police can protect them. This with clear evidence to the contrary. Now there is nothing on paper. No one has a list of folks or anything else. But it has already proven useful in several "property" crimes. Just neighbors helping neighbors. A lot like it was when I was growing up. Back then a kid got banged up (happened frequently when we used to "play" outside) you could go to any house and the adult there in would take care of you. Today that rarely happens due to fear of litigation.
  5. Last trip to RS I needed some buss fuses. The girl didn't even know what a fuse was. She only sold phones. The electronic parts area was a mere shadow of what it once was and in disarray.
  6. Someone mentioned intentionally using a former address.
  7. I used the term stationary to differentiate between a unit that doesn't move as opposed to a mobile unit that moves. Nobody argues about mobile, regardless of how it moves. But stationary (not moving) seems to be confusing. Seems pretty simple. A stationary unit( not moving communicating with another stationary unit ( not moving) both units are fixed. If a stationary unit communicates with a mobile unit it's then a base. Do I understand correctly.
  8. Maybe I am too green to understand, but it doesn't seem all that complicated based on stations talk to mobile units. Fixed stations talk to stationary units that by virtue of being stationary are fixed stations.
  9. Just a thought, but those who have intentionally given false addresses on the license application are guilty of a federal crime. Now the chances of being found and convicted are very slim but I imagine those disingenuous individuals would scream the loudest if caught. Plus it exhibits just plain low moral character.
  10. Speaking of Del Webb, I was always impressed with the commercial buildings his company built. They put brass plaques on them with things like the architect and project manager's names. They took pride in what they built. Sadly today most builders put up buildings that barely meet code and begin to fail as soon as the last nail is driven.
  11. Using existing radios, yes. But if the frequencies were given over to GMRS I'm pretty sure someone would find a way to make one radio do both.
  12. My dad impressed on me the point of using the right tool for the job. https://remstoolsusa.com/rems-164011-contact-2000-electric-soldering-unit/
  13. Boy is the new owner gonna be PO'd when the FCC swat team raids his house at O Dark Thirty.
  14. Personal opinion only. But with the billions (possibly trillions) of gallons of leaded gasoline that was used you'd think we would all be dead. But strangely lead poisoning is quite rare. Yea, we wore protective gear in the tetraethyllead house, but the concentration was so far above what the average person would ever be exposed is enormous.
  15. Regarding soldering. Back in Jr High we had to take several shop classes, wood, metal, electrical and drafting. You learned skills like soldering. Today I don't think they even have shop classes. That's one big reason most kids today can't do something as simple as solder.
  16. Geesh! Paranoia is growing rampant. Thank heavens the federal, state and local governments have access to every bit of my information. That way I don't have to wring my hands and whimper about it. And as to regular folks knowing about me, just ask, I love to talk about myself. Not to mention I have accumulated some really good stories over the last 70+ years. I suppose some one could try to steal my identity but since any fraud committed by such means wouldn't be done by me, I'd just choose to ignore any blowback. I just inform folks it wasn't me so deal with it. Besides, I am an old fart much closer to the end than the start and that makes ME completely unpredictable.
  17. I'm not saying you can't be charged if you change your credit card number. I'm saying your financial institution can't deduct from your account if you tell them not to. If they do, they are liable. I've always notified my bank when I stop an auto pay. Maybe it's unnecessary and all the companies I have dealt with are open and above board. It's your money, take charge of it.
  18. You should get bank statements monthly. If you read those you should know of any "auto" payments. If you cancel something with an auto payment and get charged again, call your bank. it's an unauthorized debit and the bank will kill it and either reimburse it or claw it back. Companies with auto payments are required to notify you, using the contact info you supply, before withdrawals are made. Why pay for a "service" when all you need to do is read your bank statement?
  19. A couple of things about every forum I participated in. You have to have thick skin or your precious ego will be destroyed. Everyone has and is entitled to, even if they don't share mine and are wrong, opinions. And sweating the small stuff is not only fun but educational. Life is full of mystery and controversy. Embrace them.
  20. You had fire? That must have been invented later.
  21. What fun would that be. Some of us look for stuff like that to "fix" for the heck of it. My wife was complaining that the new larger paper towel rolls wouldn't fit her holder. I said buy a new one, she like the existing one. So out to the garage, a full roll of the triples a tape measure and the appropriate sized drill bits. Less than five minutes. She's happy and I got to use tools.
  22. Though here's an interesting one. I'm down on the coast in Los Angeles. Went to the store and turned on my radio. I was picking up folks from Victorville and Barstow which is about 140 miles and over some relatively high (SoCal speaking) mountains. This was not off of a repeater. Radio waves can be some sneaky things. Can't hear someone a block away, but hear someone from over a hundred miles away.
  23. I have a better use for grass.
  24. So if it's "not for profit" do they have do the appropriate tax paperwork?
  25. For the experts, is it even in accordance with FCC to have a commercially operated repeater?
