  1. So far the folks getting into our neighborhood network just use the appropriate call sign and first name. That way no one has to memorize all the call sign. We pretty much know who Sal is even if we have three.
  2. Well, it's take a few weeks getting all the bits and bobs to complete my mobile radio setup. This involves (for the present) one radio, Radioddity DB20-G, cup holder mount, four antennas, one mag mount, an NMO mount (permanently installed on one vehicle), a AC to DC power pack and an old unused Max Expedition Fat Boy pack. My primary vehicle is a Toyota Tacoma. So, the NMO mount is permanently installed on the rear of the truck. The other two vehicles '82 Jeep CJ and '78 Ford LTD II Sports Touring Edition will use the mag mount as will the "base station". Four antennas because I couldn't find a satisfactory way to carry one, so those live in each vehicle and my den. Although I likely will install some sort of permanent antenna at the house. With this setup I can simple grab the bag and have everything I need to be up and transmitting in just a couple of minutes. I'm in the programming phase with the radio. Currently using factory software. Frankly the programming is a heck of a lot simpler than what I used to do with process control equipment, just repetitious as all get out. But, I have tested tested all of the installations and my SWR ranges from 1.01 to 1.03.
  3. Doesn't sound like an issue. Sounds like that's the way it's designed.
  4. Along this line, I always wear gloves while handling blued steel firearms. Or they get wiped down immediately. I can rust blued steel in a heartbeat. So while I prefer the look of blued steel I mostly own stainless. Even with that my old bicycle gun has surface staining. I gave up removing it and just accept it as "patina".
  5. Okay, here's a silly question. Why can't the collection and use of gmrs radios be a hobby? Folks will say they're for use as an adjunct to other "hobbies" such are hiking, off roading, fishing, hunting, etc. But I'd bet more that a few folks here have considerably more radios than they actually need for these activities. The whole programming thing seems to be an area that sounds hobbish. Then you get into setting up and maintaining repeaters. Other than for your personal use that sounds very much like a hobby. GMRS clubs, well that's definitely in hobby territory. Personally, I'm looking at it as just another hobby for my retirement years. Another new field to study and learn. And actually for the most part cheaper than some of my other hobbies.
  6. One other factor would be the individuals own sweat. The "salinity" of folks sweat varies. We ran some tests using a conductivity meter across the palm of numerous folks and the numbers were all over the place.
  7. Not a Sears, but for some reason Uniden comes to mind. For quite a few years mine sat on a shelf in the garage. It finally went during one of my clean outs.
  8. One of the things I mentioned when I started here was how tight my neighborhood is. I wondered about this very idea. But decided to get better educated before jumping in. Because of the fairly short distances I don't think any sort of repeater is needed. I'll continue to watch this thread for ideas.
  9. I can think of one advantage of answering your phone home with your mic. Here using a handheld phone while driving illegally (never enforced but still technically against the law) but using a hand handheld microphone isn't.
  10. Re ISO "certification". The idea of ISO looks good on paper. But in reality is pretty much worthless, especially when dealing with foreign made materials. There isn't really any sort of enforcement to insure a product touted as from an ISO facility actually meets the standards. This is especially true with products from China.
  11. As a newbie here but an old fart who dates back to dialup and bulletin boards I can tell you anytime you are a newbie you need two assets. One, thick skin. There are always "individuals" who get off proving they are superior by belittling others. And two, a well developed BS meter that allows you to learn which sources provide good info and which supply BS by the truck load. I've found that the need to prove superiority and dispense BS tend to go hand in hand. Are there such "individuals" here. Of course, they tend to want folks to think a forum is their domain. They tend to repeat their "party line" over and over and over again. But once spotted simply ignore them and it will be a great resource. One way to separate the wheat from the chaff is to start a topic and ask a question. The mentoring type will answer with good info. The self appointed experts usually start with derision.
  12. I guess my biggest surprise is that they are USB. You know "UNIVERSAL" Serial Bus". That crazy idea that port and IRQ selection would be a thing of the past.
  13. Good heavens. Latest OS and we're assigning ports like it's the 80's. Next someone will bring up serial ports and IRQ's
  14. Used to be a guy locally that kept a gator. Sadly he tired of it and dumped it in a nearby lake. To save it the local authorities finally caught it a few years later. Then it died and the zoo has had a "stand in" since. Yep, the environment was so bad that the gator had the audacity to grow once it had space and all the food it wanted.
  15. Worked, thanks.
  16. Technically a "rounded rectangle". But whose counting.
  17. Yea, but if I go out to Mygmrs.com it shows there. So, there is that. Honestly, the adverts don't really bother me, I've gotten pretty good at ignoring stuff like that. The one things that does bug me is when you go to a site (that and spell check that makes changes like site to sight) and they request you turn off your ad blocker or you can't see their content. Kind of dumb, cuz most folks who are blocking ads will just navigate away. Few things are so important on the web you can't live without them.
  18. Ok, I'll just drop this here. Have premium. Made sure I logged out, cleared history, logged back in. Still seeing advertisements. Admin, please investigate.
  19. If it's blue tooth, could it use your vehicles sound system as a speaker?
  20. I know you're in another part of California, but down here thieves, amateur or professional, do not fear video surveillance. On my camera app there are videos of thefts taking place. None are ever even investigated. Simply put the police won't arrest, the DA won't prosecute and thus the thieves never do any jail time. And they know it.
  21. Well, I split the difference between collect and accumulate. I acquire. I do this by the simple means of impulse buying. When I was younger purchases had to be planned and saved for. These days I simply see it & buy it. Turns out I have "acquired" some of my favorite things that way. Now some could say impulse buying is simply giving into momentary lust. But, one of my favorite things I "acquired" do to lust (and at the time nothing more) I have been married to for 52 years.
  22. Actually my preference is a .45 Colt Blackhawk.
  23. Sadly in the L.A. Metro area thefts from vehicles is rampant. And they take anything that isn't nailed down. They may toss it later, but they are going to take it. My particular vehicle is a Tacoma. One of the most popular pickups to steal, or just steal parts from. My property doesn't have space to park off street. So, while I have an alarm, kill switch and physical locking devices to prevent theft of the vehicle, it's still wide open to smash and grabs. Anything tempting in lain sight just ups the chances. I could go on and on why this is so, but the reality is there is no enforcement of the laws regarding vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles. Oh, you can go online and file a report (at least the trees won't be harmed) but it will never been seen by human eyes.
  24. Sun city, my cousin died there.
  25. Hey guys, if I irked some of you with my teasing I apologize.
