  1. Socalgmrs a question. What brands do you own? Or did you build it yourself like Hams of old did? Pardon me, that was two questions. Maybe that is causing his lack of response.
  2. Hmm. I worked with power conditioners for control equipment. That was AC. I wonder if they have these for DC.
  3. It's a government website. That means done by the lowest bidder to the minimum standards (did quite a few Fed project from CDC to bureau of prisons). I had no problems but the next person might not be so lucky.
  4. You pretty much defined a sociopath. I'd never go that far without a through psychological exam. But...
  5. That didn't come up in my google search. Thanks Steve
  6. As some may know, I'm new. As i read I often see terms I don't understand. Some times I can figure it out from context. The term "desense" is one such example. Is there somewhere I haven't yet found a glossary of radio terms? And if not, perhaps one of the HERD could start one that could be added to by other gurus.
  7. Little update. The possible issue of looping coax isn't increased SWR. It's noise. Apparently depending on how and where the loops are it can be an issue. So, if you avoid loops, you avoid problems. By the way, someone mentioned that GMRS is so simple it should need a lot of explaining. Well, I've been involved in firearms for over 60 years (first .22 rifle on my 10th birthday). While I would never claim to "know it all", I do know a lot. So, to me it's all pretty simple stuff. But when a newbie shows up on a forum the last thing you want to do is prove how superior you are by saying things like "it's so simple even a caveman can do it" (yea, I have read that exact comment). People don't now what they don't know. The smart ones ask. The smartassed one's respond with distain. But fear not, I shall continue to ask "stupid" questions, even when I am no longer stupid.
  8. Hmm, perhaps I am unwelcome here. My off road vehicle is a Jeep. The same CJ-8 I've been driving since 1982. In the past 40 odd years I have been helped and helped pretty much every brand of vehicle. Including the unstuckable Unimog. I suppose there are Jeep owners who adopt a superior attitude because they have built Jeeps. But if you check the undercarriage you'll find they have never left the asphalt. Once you get on the trail it is all just good natured ribbing between owners of different brands. And yea, many aren't ever going to know all the ins and outs of "radio". That's not their focus. GMRS to them if an adjunct to their hobby. Much like CB was and still is to some. Just a better means of communication. Beats yelling down the trail.
  9. Nope, never left the dock. But it was one heck of a piece of maritime history. Sadly after only three, if I recall correctly 1/2 trips to collect "magnesium nodules" it was mothballed and has now been scrapped.
  10. Not sure if this applies, but the social security site shuts down at night.
  11. Maybe out of line, but when an agency feels threatened they usually do something to punish the public. Happened here when voters drastically reduced property taxes in the 70's. Eliminating regs could chaos and that could be the punishment for having their power and numbers reduced. If this is unacceptable, mods please eliminate the post.
  12. Was on the Glomar Explorer when it took a lightning strike to the derrick. I was on the port bridge wing. You could "feel" in the air just before. Really disorienting afterwards. That's as close as I ever want to be to a strike.
  13. Depending on where and how you mount the NMO mount drip loops aren't necessary. The folks I'm working with are a Marine Electronics shop that was started in 1960 and still run by the second generation (he's 72). I'm pretty sure he knows all the ins and outs of antenna mounting. I imagine most folks here would kill for this kind of resource.
  14. Finally got down to the marine electronics store. Quite a learning experience. They don't usually do a lot of GMRS stuff, but certainly have everything needed to install them . they also can make up a custom coax. Unknown to me was that there are a number of different types, including some that are designed for high heat environments. Stranded and non stranded. Made a lot of recommendations on coax routing, grounding and on and on. Frankly, it was overload, but they said to just call with any questions. So, for my NMO mount and coax I need to get an accurate measurement and let them know and they will make it up. Apparently, it's a high complicated five minute job. I had figured I would get a premade coax longer than needed and just loop the extra and stuff it out of the way. Apparently it's not a good idea to loop the cable.
  15. Welcome. As a recent member I invite you to follow me down the rabbit hole. But fear not there are signposts and helpful denizens to both add clarity and confusion. Just avoid that darned cat.
  16. I live in a port town. For my entire life I have driven past a marine electronics store. Not needing "marine" electronics (radar, sonar, gps and its predecessor LORAN, and of course radios). I never had a need to visit. But as it turns out the store carries all sorts of GMTS, FRS and HAM equipment. And not just for boats. i called yesterday and found out that not only do they have probably everything you find all your needs met in one place. Plus and more importantly, they are more than to share decades of knowledge and experience. Heading down tomorrow with a list of needfuls and more importantly a list of questions.
  17. Honestly, an adult trying to entice a child online or on air concerns me. Maybe it's all innocent. Then again...
  18. And, if I'm correct, that would work with the Midland MXTA26? I should mention that my Jeep is an old CJ-8, think Jeep with a small pickup bed. I've got tube bumpers front and rear. I've seen lots of mounts for roll bars that are 2" should work on a bumper tube.
  19. And, the questions continue. I have decided not to use the mag mount. I found a mount for my pickup that attaches easily to existing bolts. It has a 3/8" hole in it, but that is adjustable. So just what type of antenna, guessing it wouldn't be a ground plane type, would work? Specific model recommendation appreciated. Also, I'm considering a rear bumper mount for the Jeep. Would the same antenna work for both?
  20. Ahh, the mystery deepens, even as the veil of ignorance is lifted. I've been involved in most of my hobbies for decades. I had forgotten that the path to knowledge takes a lot of effort and brain cells.
  21. As a newbie I was a bit confused about the overlap of FRS and GMRS channels. Perhaps that is where the confusion springs from. I have heard call signs on FRS channels so that doesn't help.
  22. Like I've said before I'm new, and I recently (re)discovered I had a pair of GXT100's I had bought for emergencies and never even turned on. I was wondering, is the reason things like the GXT1000 aren't repeater capable is because of their low wattage doesn't support duplex? If I'm correct you need duplex capability to use repeaters. Educae me if I'm on the wrong path.
  23. Okay, thanks for the info. I'm in SoCal so I'm looking for a local "club". Anyway to find out how you have set up your ESG?
  24. Ahh, I tried searching antenna and was overwhelmed. Just a thought as I am aiming for commonality. Would the same techniques that work on a jeep work on other vehicles?
