What unique channel groups and scan groups do you find useful?
WSHH887 replied to WRNU354's question in Technical Discussion
Why create scan groups? Well as a departed friend used to say to such comments, "because I can". The cougar crouch lives. RHIP Bestlever. -
Most of the guys taking the course had spent little to no time outdoors. They suffered and complained. I think attitude was a lot of it. We knew they couldn't kill or seriously maim us. Well, we hoped anyway. There were times we weren't entirely sure about that.

Keep talking guys I am learning a lot. The bit about gain effecting the pattern is new to me. So if using a 6db antenna and a 3 db antenna you would mount the 6 db lower since its pattern is "thinner"?

I think you misunderstood. "Call anyone" is simply putting out a general call to see who is still up and running as a first step to self organization. After recent events I'm not sure how fast or well government organizations will respond. Even Red Cross takes time. You have to start with what you have. GMRS is fairly short range in simplex. You start close to home and work out. Best case scenario you are going to have days before any help arrives. As to who might be monitoring, well relief assets may or may not, but it's sure worth a shot. Experience has taught me that in bad situations you try anything you can think of some stuff works some doesn't. You take what works and run with it.

The drunk afterwards was good. But the course? This s from a kid who grew up hunting, fishing, etc. Did you have anyone go exactly 180* backwards on your map & compass work?

Aircrew survival training. That really sucked. I did mine at Hurlburt. Where did the Army send you?

I'm not a "prepper". But living in earthquake and fire country (until the Palisades fire I didn't consider this fire country), I am prepared for such eventualities. So who would I call. Pretty much anyone who would answer. In a disaster information is vital. And authorities do monitor the full spectrum of radio communications. Both to send help and to obtain information on the scope and severity of the incident. In short the same thing folks originally used CB for.

Here's part of the secret. My next door neighbor bought there house. But the wife grew up in a house, still owned by her parents at the other end of the block. The husband has several cousins and two uncles living across the alley. The house up the street on the corner is owned by a third generation. A few door down it's second generation, along with one being rebuilt across the street. Even many of the folks who are "new", meaning last 15 to 20 years, grew up in town and we seem to know their aunts, uncles, cousins, parent an grand parents. You see until just recently there were only two high schools in town. One a public school, and the other a Catholic high school. And, most of our parents and for the younger folks grand parents went to one or the other. I mentioned previously about finding a marine electronic store. Turns out the owner was only a year ahead of me in high school. Neither of us put it together initially. We ran in different circles. And to top it off, my high school teacher for Trig and Calc was the same one my dad had. The first day in trig class he asked me if I was related to that red headed Frank kid. Apparently my dad was an even bigger smarta## than I was.

Well now, your treatise on channels might seem complicated to some, but by reading carefully and after digesting the information I have a better understanding. I especially liked the transmit and receive frequencies for the repeater channels. I'm not sure these little GXT's are preset to transmit on the repeater frequencies and thus repeater capable. They do say you can assign a "privacy" code which I take to be the same as a tone. I'm still working on installing the DB-20 but I'm learning a heck of a lot with jst these little handhelds. Keep funneling the information. Thanks.

Explains why the antennas on Mount Wilson are different heights. You know this is turning into one of those "the more you know, the more you know what you don't know" situations. Turning into quite an interesting rabbit hole. Again, thanks Steve.

Sounds like a wireless version of the old phone tree. when I moved here in '79 my Nextdoor neighbor explained they had one for the block and a bit beyond. Something happened you would call the person above and below you. They call the next one. If that person doesn't answer you called the next. Worked great as long as the phones did. Being a long stable area most of us have our neighbors cell numbers. It's not as organized anymore (the motivating force passed a few years ago). But e keep tabs on older less firm folks. Plus we just like to gab.

That works on so many levels. But what is this rain thing of which you speak? I've heard tell of it. But always thought it was just a legend.
-
Okay, now I have to learn about propagation patterns. Just a thought, but would changing the elevation between the two antennas help? Recall seeing Mount Wilson, where all the broadcast antennas are, as a kid. It looked like a darned porcupine with all the antennas. I wonder how they dealt with propagation pattern issues.

Okay, while I am not interested in setting up a repeater, I find the topic interesting. So, other than cost what is prohibitive about using two antennas fairly close to one another?

WSEN940. Thanks for the info. It's starting to make more sense. The instructions I received were sparse to put it mildly. I put a spreadsheet together that shows the GMRS channel versus the midland channel. I'm going to incorporate the chart info you provided. It helps me to learn when I can arrange things in a way that makes sense to me. Again, thanks.
-
WSEN940, I just checked my midland instructions and the chart shows the midland channel and the frequency. It doesn't show the gmrs channel. So are the gmrs 15 to 22 shown on your chart repeater channels? I know you can change the ctss on the radios. all of my channels have the ctss off from the factory. More learning and fun in store. If I'm wrong I'm sure the HERD's will straighten me out. Thanks

Thanks Steve.

Antenna Wiring - Outback 2020 - A Useful Find
WSHH887 replied to WSEN940's topic in General Discussion
If you do use one of the under body car plugs to route wiring, silicone the underside at least to seal out water and dust. If access is possible do the inside as well. If water migrates into the vehicle, rust and possibly mold will occur under the carpet. -
Are these, in principle, the same thing as the old coax switches one used for multiple inputs to a TV with a single input?
-
Ahh, I continue to learn. So this explains why my GXT1000 have fifty channels when only 22 gmrs channels exist. No once I get al my parts and install the DB-20 in my truck I'll see what I can do about accessing those other 28 channels in the GXT's

Ahh, paintball. Or as I like to call it spray painting ball. I did it in the beginning in the 80's? All guns were single shot. Then we added small magazines above the barrel. Next came the wonders of pump action. I added a buttstock by modifying one from a pellet pistol shaped like a S&W model 41. My lust for getting smacked in the face with paint balls satisfied I retired when the full auto mega magazine rifles arrived. Skill was no longer a requirement.

Not lazy, you are just a thinker who solves problems. But, what if you drop the cover in the grass while slipping the radio in?

Radioddity & Retevis - Return process broken [updated]
WSHH887 replied to Wayfarer's topic in General Discussion
Something I have noticed on several forums. Folks will scream bloody murder if they get bad products or services. But most remain quiet as church mice when things are good. I take rants with a grain of salt. Then there are those who never have a good word to say about anything. Those are flatly ignored. Which is too bad because sometimes they do have valuable information to pass on. -
In all my years of hunting I have only worn camo a very few times. On the other hand my kids go full on camo. They figured out that either a good blind or proper stalk and spot techniques far outweighs hiding in plain sight. Both had been to Marine sniper school. So for the most part if they can see it they can shoot it in the areas we hunt. what I get a kick out of is folks who go full on camo, then put on an orange vest. Now you'll hear experts say some critters don't see color. But they sure as heck see shades of grey. And is you grew up watching black & white TV you learned to assign colors to grey scale images. Pretty sure critters can do something similar. Or at least learn that shade of grey is dangerous.
