  1. Correct - A (simplex) channel to talk to other travelers/get road checks/etc, while on the road - just like good old CB Ch19. Discussing it here doesn't matter though, because none of the discussion, arguing, and bragging about who has "worked in the industry" longest is going to make any difference at all.
  2. The MXT275 is about as simple as it gets..here's the down & dirty notes on using GMRS on a MXT275: 1) turn radio on 2) Select channel you want to talk on 3) Push button on mic, point noise-hole at mic, talk 4) Let go of button on mic 5) Listen If you have any other more specific questions I'm sure the community can help.
  3. Everyone in our GMRS group uses MDC so we know who is talking and/or what radio they are on.
  4. I have looked myself (at the last 10 years of enforcement), thats why I dont trust what you're saying.
  5. ...as predicted...
  6. Not that I dont trust you, or think you're making stuff up out of thin air, but i would love for you to share some actual facts about all these others this has happened to. Perhaps a link to the FCC enforcement database entry? Because as I'm sure you know, every time the FCC breathes down anyones neck, for any reason, by law, the FCC must publish that enforcement.
  7. ..Like I said...
  8. Just remember, that as predicted in the proclamation video, "some people" will always and forever spew reasons why Ch19 (any channel, actually) is not "the right choice", and will argue about it as they have for years, accomplishing nothing.. Those people are not invited to join with the rest of us normal people on Ch19.. They can go talk to themselves on some other channel.. My name is Queen Randy and I approve this message.
  9. Just FYI, most radios want 13.8V, and if given only 12V they may not output their full 25W glory.
  10. The T5950 appears to be a (grandfathered) FRS radio, and you do not need a license to transmit on any channels with this radio.
  11. Whoever told you that is either an idiot, a liar, or quite possibly, both.
  12. Is there a way to block/hide a user's posts?
  13. And you base this on... A guess? Anyway, you would be guessing wrong as I have tested the MXT400, MXT500, MXT275 and MXT575 on narrow/wideband. I dont have a fancy deviant meter - the difference can easily be heard with a regular human ear.
  14. It's not "largely" an empty threat, it is 100% an empty threat, based on the FCC's track record.. And for clarification for anyone following along at home, the ONLY penalties the FCC has levied in the last 10 years has been for doing things far and beyond anything that most rational people would even consider doing - and even then, they've only issued a handful.... and least I forget, paying the FCC for a license does not, in any way make anyone accountable for anything. It only makes one accountable if/when they choose to announce their callsign. But as mentioned, I DO agree, that feeding the radio-monkeys (aka dickheads, jammers, malicious operators) is a bad idea, so we can still hug. ?
  15. I agree with that club president and the OP, that talking to jammers/dickheads just lets them know they're doing a good job and gives them the attention that their mother never gave them as a child, but I really want to hear more facts from @WRQC527 about the FCC pulling licenses for talking to unlicensed operators.
  16. They make a MXT500 which is wideband. The MXT400 (which I have owned and used) sounds fine.. The XS20G (which I have owned and used) also sounds fine. Your ear will never hear the difference between an SOC and a SuperHet GMRS radio.. You might notice (a lot) more static/bleed over from other frequencies if driving near high-power transmitters (TV, microwave, equipment control, etc) on an SOC than a SuperHet, but that is likely the only thing you would ever notice. If sound is your most important factor, 2nd only to reliability, then consider the KG-1000G (which I have owned several of, and used in my 2 Jeeps), which has two speakers, both loud and decent quality.
  17. This sounds very serious! Can you tell us how many have lost their license (ham or gmrs) for talking to an unlicensed operator in the last 10 years?
  18. No. We all have to get along like grownups, which not-surprisingly, can sometimes be difficult so usually the bigger repeater wins.
  19. You can do it now. I would just add a note in the description with it's current "test" status. You can update the listing as often and as much as you'd like.
  20. We all know this is absolutely un-true.. Only about 90% of them are like that.
  21. AFAIK no legit place will say anything about the software, but some places will accidentally drop a thumb-drive in the box with the software on it when they ship it.
  22. Me, and most of the guys in my local GMRS-Dork group all use XTS5000s ... Other than the price.. and the size, it is IMO, the best radio you can use as far as performance, durability and quality.. The biggest downside is probably getting your hands on the Motorola programming software and then learning how to use it.. it is NOT easy to learn and it is very ... "deep"... IMHO, I would be sure to get a Model III which has the screen and all the buttons - the only other options that comes to mind is ADP and AES encryption.. ADP encryption is probably enough for 99.999% of people, and AES requires an expensive "keyloader" before you can use it.. but it doesn't hurt to have both options enabled. Many upgrades are software based and you could do them yourself IF you get your hands on that software (different from the programming software) otherwise you might have to pay someone to do them. IIRC, the only hardware based upgrade is AES encryption - but I could be remembering that wrong.
  23. The correct answer is "It depends" .. anything else is only a guess.
  24. The actual, correct spelling is: Magiguhsquirtz.. But the SQ is silent.
  25. yah, thats how picket fencing works. I have several of those MXTA12 mounts and I dont think there is anything inside them that can come loose. .. I think what you are describing is normal picket fencing, unless as I said, it also happens on very close/strong signals.
