  1. It is!  What the graph doesn't show is that I was down in a muddy creek bottom, behind a hill when she heard the conversation between rigs.  She's too radio shy to chime in and inform me she's listening.  All good tho'.  My part of the country is ideal for elevation changes and long distances.

      Fantastic!

Isn’t it amazing what range we can achieve when there is no earth and other serious obstacles in the way?

    Enjoy.

  2. Since there's sparse usage of GMRS in my area, I run w/o any PL tones, except repeaters, of course.

Yes. I have double and triple checked. Sometimes it will open up after a couple seconds, but most of the time will not open up at all.

It's like there isn't enough power going into the radio to open the tone. (My description of what it seems like, may not be an appropriate term). I might try a no tone receive and see what happens.

  3. Are your CTCSS codes matched up between radios (TX/RX)?  I just tried my 76 with an 805G on Ch. 9 and it worked fine both directions.

One thing I noticed as well, is that the radio does not like to receive on the mid channels.

I have messed with the squelch, tested with my GMRS V1 and my Cobra FRS radios as well. I can transmit, but not receive. I can use the 462 channels as well as the repeater channels and hit all loud and clear and Receive loud and clear.

Not sure what it is with 8 to 14.

  4. That thing is hawt! How did you post the pic? Did you somehow shrink it enough to use the forum picture upload?

    Thanks.

Doing a trail run with a gang of off-roaders tomorrow and will be checking range to the repeater via HTs.   25 mi. LOS from where we're headed to the repeater and the same to my house to try simplex with the wife.

Haven't installed the mobile just yet.  Gonna have a 'garage day' and hopefully get mobiles in more Jeeps & others.  Pushing for licensing.  Will push harder if/when it goes to $35.

Tap-a-Talk works best for me to post from my phone.  This pic is from the laptop and I'm not sure how it worked.  Should be able to choose file size.

  6. I tried posting pics and failed. I am not a forum newb. Hoping somebody can help me navigate this forum's needs as far as pics go.

    Wrangler models:

After the CJ came the '87?-'95 YJ. Leaf sprung and weird square headlights.

Then came the best Jeep, the '97-'06 TJ. Coil sprung and proper round Jeep headlights. Just the right amount of modern but still stupid simple. They also made an "Unlimited" variant people unofficially call the LJ (long Jeep) which is stretched similar to the Scrambler. Also the Rubicon model had a better transfer case and locking beefier axles.

'07-'17? were JK's. These saw the advent of the 4 door option which has seen them explode in popularity. It also means a lot of people who would have otherwise bought an SUV to haul the kids around bought these, so a lot of earlier Jeep guys kind of look down on these. You'll see a lot more stupid low profile 24" rims or bought not built mall crawlers in these years. The JKU just means JK unlimited which is the 4 door version. JKUR = Unlimited Rubicon model JK.

The '18+ are JT (Jeep truck) and JL. They are nice and very expensive. I wouldn't want to scratch mine or roll it.

    Non-Wranglers:

XJ is the classic Cherokee. Super dope. I love these. '87-'06?

ZJ is the original Grand Cherokee. These are very cool. Because v8 and you can still wheel them

  7. In the process of installing 1/4 wave NMO mount in the roof of my '99 XJ, connected to a Kenwood TK-8180 either above the mirror or inside the DIN by replacing the stereo I don't use.  Have the Kenwood DIN bracket made for this.

Trail rides with a group and hunting.

  8. Not finding if I posted this earlier.

Will Raptor Liner on the roof of a vehicle change propagation characteristics of a 1/4 wave NMO Ground Plane antenna?  Raptor is not rubber based like many but is poly.  It's posted here somewhere that a molded plastic kayak over the top of said antenna will not cause any problems.

  9. I dont have pictures but there are a ton on RR. Yes radio decks are all bolted to a piece of painted plywood that uses a Steel L bracket to the seat bolts.

Thanks to you and Steve.  Looks like a great resource.  Logged right in so obviously signed up for it some time ago then promptly forgot about RR.

  10. Has anyone installed a mobile unit in the newest body F-Series CC Ford?  Looking for installation hints.  Planning for Kenwood TK-8180 under/behind rear seat with head on remote mount on the dash, 1/4 wave antenna center of roof.

I'll visit YouTube as well but hoping someone here might have a write-up of sorts.

    Thanks.

  11. Downloaded and "installed" the latest version of Chirp to program a BF-F8HP and get nothing but a blank when I open the application (chirpw).

    FILE  Edit   View  Radio  Help

There is nothing to choose like Program, etc to check/set Com Port.  yes the cable is connected on Com 8.

    No Menu, no Setup.. zero.

  12. 8180 has front-mounted speaker while 880 has side-mounted speaker, thus 8180 is easier to fit into car dashboard. 880 has to be located with speaker not blocked, or remote speaker is needed. 8180 has removable head, making it even more flexible for in-car installation.

I finally found a photo of the KRK-10 remote mount for my TK-8180.  Ordered it up.  Should work A1 on the existing bracket on top of my '18 F350 dash.  And with a 1/4 wave 6" antenna in the middle of the CC roof, I expect good performance.
