BTech GMRS RPT50 - NEW 50-Watt GMRS Only Repeater
gortex2 replied to OffRoaderX's topic in Equipment Reviews
Isn't this a repeater ? If so there is no need for 800 frequencies. 99% of the time a repeater is on one channel and one channel only. -
Lots of threads already on this radio. USe the search above and type in your radios. Here is the first that popped up for me
-
Agree my new work truck is a Nissan Frontier. Trying to jam 4 radios in it was a joke. In the end I had to go with remote head, dual heads to control it all.
-
I tried one of these on a SAR members vehicle, 2021 3500HD DEnali with the sliding roof as yours. It was on a trunked system and on the system with a 1/4 wave worked ok. Simplex was misserable. Since then I dropped 2 NMO mounts in the roof and that mount was given away. There is plenty enough room for a NMO on each side. He runs a 1/4 wave VHF and UHF. At times he does swap out to the Larsen NMO puck on UHF but 90% of the time the 1/4 wave is on the truck.
-
I run the 275/575 in all my Jeeps. I like KISS and that works for my needs. Not a ton of room in a Jeep.
-
As was mentioned a single quarter wave is our best bet. I installed those on many machines over hte years for logging and highway departments. Yes it may get destroyed but they are $10 at most. Unscrew NMO and replace it when needed.

As others have said many of the repeaters you have listed are bogus but everyone adds stuff to this site thinking its some way to "save" a channel or somthing. So going by the site list is really useless. As for why someone may have more repeaters, I'll use myself as an example. Also before you ask none of mine are listed anywhere as I dont feel I need to. They are my property and I maintaint them for my use. So back to my repeaters. I have 2 in my area for a north and south coverage footprint. Both can be accessed from me at home or my parents house. I also have 2 repeaters in another state. I use those when I am in that state as does my family and friends. I also have a repeater for my motorhome so it goes where I go. So I can see how some folks may have multiple. JMHO..

GETTING READY FOR DMR IN MY VERY NEAR FUTURE
gortex2 replied to nokones's topic in Miscellaneous Topics
Yes I run the Uniden CMX760 in both the JT and the 09JK. I have it on the bench from my old work truck just dealing with finding an antenna location on my new work truck. Its small and with 4 multibands on roof already Its been lower on the list. The new JK (18) is for the wife and being JJUSA is all GMRS probably just leave GMRS for now. Tomorrow will be it first trail ride since we got it done. -
GETTING READY FOR DMR IN MY VERY NEAR FUTURE
gortex2 replied to nokones's topic in Miscellaneous Topics
Yes APX series is slick. In our older JK I used to have a dual deck single head. That gave the wife all 4 bands with only one O7 control head. My work truck has 2 dual deck APX setups. So basically I can be on any 4 bands at once on any radio. I have a XPR with HHCH sitting in the shop to install but DMR is basically defunct in my area for ham and commercial in UHF so never put it in. Right now my jeeps all have a mix match of stuff - 09 JK - APX8500 w/HHCH, Kenwood TMD700 (APRS), Midland 275, Uniden CMX CB 18 JK Rubicon - APX8500 w/HHCH, Midland 275 (Jeep Model) and Yaseu FTM400 (APRS) 20 JT Gladiator - APX8500 w/HHCH, Midland 275, Uniden CMX, FTM400 (APRS) 2023 Drag Pak Challenger - 8500 w/HHCH (hidden in center console) -
Why does it matter. Are you paying electric bil, tower fees and such for them ? You ever think the owners just dont care about users or nets on them ? I have multiple repeaters in multiple states. Some are those "300'" tower you speak of. They are my repeaters and I pay for maintenance and upkeep. they are there for me, my family and a few freinds. I can say 100% if you drive by some of them they are dead all week long as no one is there. Weeks are different. No way I'd want to put farmers or any of that on my stuff. Thats what LMR Part 90 is for. Additionally there is absolutely no requirement to have a repeater on the air. 95% of my traffic is simplex. repeater is there when needed. So its used.

In the 20+ years I've been using the FCC site it rutinely has issues. This is nothing new and normally the next day things are fine as it is right now.
-
Interesting. Ive never seen anoy one bash antenna farm on RR. As a matter of fact they are recommended quite often. They did some changes last year but still one of the best places for hobby folks to get stuff. I use Talley and Tessco for work stuff but get alot of non work items from Antenna Farm.
-
I run the same setup on my Gladiator (Soft Top) but with a commercial UHF LMR antenna. Works excellent for its use case (GMRS Simplex and TLMR). On my one JK I also run the same on my Midland GMRS Radio. I can't run either with my hardtop but the JK has no top.

So in a nutshell you want to charge users for a service that some use already with zello. I guess I dont see the need to add LTE to a repeater that is for local use. If I wanted extended coverage I'd either install a second repeater or go to a service I can do other stuff. I have SAR stuff linked to Zello and it works for what it is. I clearly do not understand the facination of making GMRS into ham radio or commercial LMR all the time.

Dallas, TX - can’t get a radio check but hear everybody
gortex2 replied to WSHE504's topic in General Discussion
Did you set the proper tone when you changed to RP20 ? Also are you sure they want to talk to you ? Contrary to popular belief alot of folks use GMRS for talking to friends. Not others. -
Best way to run a coax cable through a car window or sunroof

Best way is not to. Drill a hole. -

Crazy winter but the wx is getting better. Was in Uhwarrie on some private land a few weeks ago and it was great to get the jeep out again. This weekend put the new radio in the wifes new JK. We ended up grabbing a second one as she wanted the "jeep" version of the 275. Happy Wife Happy Life. So I now have a spare. I did get the FTM400 mounted. HEado n molle panel and deck on side wall. I actually made a bracket out of 1" aluminum that uses the hard top bolt holes to hang it behind the roll bar. I have the other JK mounted behind the console and she doens't like it blocking cup hholders. This jeep will stay with rear seat so makes sense. Waiting on some parts for the front end now. Noticed we would align front end and it would bounce around too much. Digging yesterday found upper balljoints shot so next weekends work is ball joints and tie rods.
-
Interesting...just installed one in the wifes JK this weekend (newest jeep in the family) and she even managed to turn it on and get it on he right channel to talk. Amazing I guess being they are junk and all that.... SMH... Oh and she even figured out how to change the speaker from the deck to the control head. Guess I got a keeper here.
-
Most likely becasue none of them monitor the emails on file or they didn't list the repeaters.

I don’t think Midland radios are very good.
gortex2 replied to SvenMarbles's topic in General Discussion
Well, If you knew anything about Midland you would know they have been in the radio business for 50 years. For decades they were a go to LMR radio for law enforcement, wildland and DNR applications. I still know agencies with Midland LMR gear in use. They also have had GMRS radios long before anyone you list on this site. My first Midland was a xstal radio and we had to wait over 2 months for the channel we got licensed to arrive. They were also the first FRS radio to the market when the FCC approved them. Yes part is marketing and they are the ONLY vendor I have ever seen at an offroad show or any event in that industry. Handheld CH. KISS. My parents are in their 70's. They want to pick up a MIC with no buttons and talk. The midland mobiles do that fine for them. For my Jeeps I have the MTX-275 (actually had another arrive yesterday..and wife wanted the Jeep one so it was $10 more than the standard). The HHCH is perfect for a vehicle such as the Jeep. We use one repeater that is mine so dont care about having 50 repeaters in the radio. The wife can jump in and it turns on and if someone say go to ch 4 she turns to CH4. Lastly 90% of the folks we wheel with run Midland as does JJUSA. For that fact its the same and anyone can jump in my rig or hers and know how to use the raidos. What many forgot on this site is we are a very very small user group that gets on a forum. Tons of folks out there use GMRS and have no interest in forums, repeaters, or being ham lite. They just use radios. I have farms all around me that use Midland gear and every tractor, combine, truck has one in it. If I want to play ham radio or outher service I just switch over the my APX8500. -
My reasoning is why is it needed ? Public Safety Radios systems dont use roger beeps and have worked just fine for years. Ive never once seen the reason for it in any of my communications. My repeaters are used all the time and users know how to operate on them. I guess its just how you use a radio or have used one. Ive never had a FF or SAR unit walk up to me and say "hey I need it to beep so I know folks are done". You will also not hear it on most commercial LMR systems. Highway departments, water departments, tow trucks, parks and rec departments all know how to use a radio. As said its all up to the individual, but I dont allow it on my repeaters and dont plan to change that.
-
I dont use it in GMRS, HAM Radio, CB or LMR.
-
That was most of it. Our shop sold lotys of GMRS systems to schools, malls and other small outfits. Mainly because we were north of Line A and even an itinerate UHF split would take over a year to get a license on. GMRS was 5-7 days after we submitted. Sold alot of Midland LMR gear, some Motorola and ICOM stuff.
