  1. Saw this in a registration package today. Was happy they are talking about it this year. Last year they just said get a radio. This year it does say a license is required. See if it affects anything. Last year at one of the events I asked a guide who said he had no license. I tried to explain the rules to him but that not something we can fix anytime soon. Sadly the more popular GMRS becomes I see license' going away just like CB.

  2. Being neither has a true ground plane it may be worth adding a ground plane vs moving them. Maybe its just the picture but i see no ground planes on either antenna. Those are both mobile antenna's so without a ground plane are both not going to do much.

Recently toured a state Emergency Operations Center communications room. Having taxpayer funding, of course there was the generator, UPS, and redundant power supplies....spare parts and radios, and stashed food and water. What I did find interesting though, was the infiltration of TYT/Anytone/Radioddity radios, augmenting the Yaesu, Icom, and Kenwood amateur radio gear. There was a DB25-D set up for DMR VHF and UHF use. Right next to a Costco sized contained of animal cookies and bricks of coffee.

I just had this conversation with a EOC director about the amount of CCR junk in boxes. He stated thats what the ham guys wanted. The county spent alot of money on hardline and installs for the ham club to order and request a $60 antenna on the top of the tower. Its sad that hams are that cheap and they wonder why more and more they are shoved out of any large incident. Sorry your CCR isn't going to work better than my APX8000 in an emergency....

Not that I use the low power channels (8-14), I don't like that they omit those channels from the radio...give me the impression that they're unnecessarily  "censoring" the radio's potential and makes me wonder what else they may be regulating on the unit (imho).

Does no one read any of the rules ? Those frequencies are only allowed in a portable radio and not mobile. Why would midland add them as receive only ? It would jsut confuse 99% of the market. Why would you think they are "censoring" the radio ? they are following the rules.

Love them or hate them Midland has a huge market in GMRS. They sell an out of the box simple devise. I would bet 95% of the Midland users never uses repeaters and if the do use one repeater. The issue is more licensing in my opinion. over 3/4 of the Jeep guys I talked to at the last Jeep Jamboree had no license but had the Midland radio (Many 275). While its required many people just buy what they perceive as needed. Midland will continue to sell GMRS radios. While many don't like them they are ideal for simple GMRS users.

  5. If you had read the rules above you would clearly see those channels are ONLY permitted to TX on a portable radio. No manufacturer will get acceptance if those are set for TX regardless of power. People tend to forget GMRS has specific rules. Just because your FRMS radio has something doe not make a GMRS certified mobile the same.

    (d) 467 MHz interstitial channels. Only hand-held portable units may transmit on these 7 channels. The channel center frequencies are: 467.5675, 467.5875, 467.6125, 467.6375, 467.6625, 467.6875, and 467.7125 MHz.

I know you can't say anything, but it appears they left out channels 8-14, which are the low power channels. If that is indeed true.... Then I'll be looking elsewhere for a radio with all the channels included....But I have my fingers crossed....

None of the midland mobiles operate on 8-14. They are FRS only and only .5 watts. I don't think any certified GMRS radio would have those channels. While the Wouxon has them they are receive only.

The real reason can be easily found within the FCC rules for GMRS. Specifically, the rule in Part 95, Subpart E which limits the frequencies commonly assigned to channels 8-14 to hand-held radios only. Here is the applicable section (from § 95.1763 GMRS channels):

    (d) 467 MHz interstitial channels. Only hand-held portable units may transmit on these 7 channels. The channel center frequencies are: 467.5675, 467.5875, 467.6125, 467.6375, 467.6625, 467.6875, and 467.7125 MHz.

  7. Most common issue with repeaters is too much power and desense. In the LMR world we installed alot of 15-20 watt repeaters that covered alot of the county. LOS is king. If your entire fleet is 3-4 watt portables there is absolutely no reason to install a 50 watt repeater. We spent lots of time balancing the systems we installed to be close to the subscriber. It eliminates false expectations and user interactions. A decent antenna will make all the difference. Sorry but an Ed Fong and a DB404 is night and day. a DB404 with a RT97 on a good site with proper RF line would be a great combination.

  8. I am guessing you missread the DTMF. I say this as the call you listed is for 948.00MHZ.

Being your on a not so good radio it could be interfearance/intermod or some other off frequency channel. If your receiving on frequency I'd verify the call again.

As for code 0. Thats Carrier Squelch. Most repeaters ID with no PL so they dont bother users who use PL.

Not sure where in Texas you are but many repeaters on the 725 frequency.

  9. As said way too much stuff for a control/dispatcher. First option as mentioned is a legacy console of some sort then local control or 4W to the radios. If your only looking for a "light" you could do on the MSI gear with the COR on the 16 pin. I have done this in the past on certain radios for other uses. You would need a relay, 16 pin accessory kit, power source and indicator but can be done. Personally I'd search for a console.
