Thanks Tom.  Do you mean 935 out performs the 905 in transmit and receive distances and clarity?

Being a newbie - I heard the 905 has the "superheterodyne circuitry" (what ever the heck that means) whereas the 935 did not.  I was thinking because of this, the clarity would be better on the 905 (less of a worry about squelch adjustment on the 905)...?  Anyway -  I also worry about the complexity (if nothing more than appearance) of the 935...  wifey would just want to P-T-T, which the 905's simple appearance and lack of buttons, is less... intimidating...?

In any regard, I've only got the one 935 coming - so we'll see.

    Thanks again!

YOU CAN TURN OFF THE DUAL DISPLAY ON THE 935 TO LOOK SIMPLE LIKE THE 905.  HAVENT SEEN ANY DIFFERENCE IN SQUELCH ADJUSTMENT.  YES I GET BETTER TX & RX ON THE 835 INCLUDING LOCATIONS WHERE THE 905 OULD NOT CONNECT TO REPEATERS LIKE FROM  AN INTERIOR SINGLE STORY BATHROOM..

Also just received my Call Sign.  For my first HT, I've ordered a KG-935G  - should be here 10/8...

Because the 935 shares the same battery AND charger as the 905, my future #2 will most likely be the KG-905G - but would like to see how well the 935 works before ordering.

HAVING BOTH MODELS THE KG-935G OUT PERFORMS MY FOUR KG-905G'S WHICH HAVE THE STOCK ANTENNA AND THE 15" NAGOYA'S.  DON'T BOTHER WITH THE KG-905.

I have a Wouxun KG-935G with a Nagoya NA-771G antenna. I can usually hit one repeater (500ft tower) 35 miles away in a 2nd story room standing next to a window. On my back porch I can hit another repeater (60ft tower) 25 miles away. When I'm making contact, it's a weak signal but usually audible. Evenings are better than daytime and moving a few inches can make a big difference. I haven't had a chance to meet any one local yet to try simplex.

My house has vinyl coated steel siding so it's essentially a Faraday cage. Magnets easily stick to the siding. Windows are double pane with no tint.

JUST DID A RADIO CHECKS FROM TWO KG-905G'S WITH THE SAME NAGOYA ANTENNA AND A KG-935G WITH STOCK ANTENNA.  NEGATIVE CONTACTS USING THE KG-906G'S  HOWEVER MADE LOUD AND CLEAR CONTACT WITH THE KG-95G TO A REOEATER AT LEAST 45 MILES DISTANT FROM AN INTERIOR 1ST STORYBEDROOM WOOD FRAME STUCCO CONSTRUCTION.

REALLY NICE PHOTOS AND GREAT REVIEW OF THE KG-935G, MY EXPERIENCE ALSO - THANKS FOR THE TIP ON THE CASE, GOING T0 ADD ONE TO MY NEXT ORDER.  I HAVE ONE KG-935G NOW AND ANOTHER ON BACKORDER MAYBE SHIP THIS WEEK,

Thank you! This is the best explanation I have read to date on the differences between superheterodyne vs SOC transceivers. I am brand new into GMRS and recently received my license. I trying to soak up as much education as I can, to make intelligent decisions going forward. I have been looking at Wouxum HT’s for my first radios. Based mainly on reviews from our favorite YouTube Hobo, I was leaning towards a KG-935G. While it has very appealing bells and whistles, I was surprised (disappointed?) to learn it is a SOC radio… unlike the 805G/905G’s. I am wondering if I may be better served with a superheterodyne 905 vs the SOC 935?

    Thoughts?

I HAVE ALL THREE, THE 805G/905G/95’s. AND HEAR NO DIFFERENCE IN TX  OR RX!  THE KG-935G IS MY FAVOEITE DUE TO THE DISPLAY.  i EXPECT UPS TO DELIVER ANOTHER KG-XS20G THIS WEDNESDAY!  THE ORDER FOR THE SECOND KG-935G STILL SHOWS "PROCESSING" ON BACKORDER.

STARTED OFF LATE 90'S / EARLY / 00'S WITH UNIDEN & MIDLAND FRS/GMRS HT'S FOR COMMUNINATING WHILE QUAIL HUNTING THEN ATER A STROKE PARALYZING MY LEFT SIDE AND ELIMINATINATING ANY HUNTING ACTIVITY I GOT BACK INTO GMRS RADIO WITH SOME KG-805G'S THEN KG-905'S AND FIMALLY WITH THE KG-935'S.  WITH BAD EYESIGHT THE DISPLAY ON THE 935G WAS AN IMPORTANT FEATURE AS WELL AS THE SOFTWARE PROGRAMING BEING SIMILAR TO MY KG-XS20'S & KG-1000G'S.  I CAN ONLY PROGRAM USING SOFTWARE DUE TO MY PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS USING THE DISPLAYS.  I HAD ALS0 PREVIOUSLY USED THE GARMIN RINO RADIOS FOR CLIENT HUNTERS WHILE  GUIDING FOR ELK AND TURKEY IN NORTHERN ARIZONA YEARS AGO.

I've had my GMRS license for nearly a year now.  I've used the Midland GMRS handheld radios for a few wheeling trips with my local 4x4 club.  My wife has complained (rightly so) that the handhelds are really difficult to use while driving, not to mention the limited range sitting inside the truck.  I want to cleanly mount a GMRS mobile radio in my vehicle, but the Midlands don't have a detachable head.  I then discovered the Wouxun KG-1000G.  This looks like it's the ticket!  Before I get this radio, I want to have a plan in place for mounting the antenna.  My goal is to have a nice coax run to the outside of my vehicle (using a rubber grommet on the rear quarter panel of the truck).  From there, I want to run the cable up to my OEM roof rack.  I'd like to use one of the Gamiviti MultiBrackets and attach a swivel antenna mount.  This should allow me to leave the antenna down for when I'm not using it.  When I hit the trail, I can flip it up and go.  When I hit a car wash, I can take it off.  My philosophy has been "buy once, cry once" and that's what I'm going for with this radio project.  I was hoping to get some solid recommendations on:

    • Proper Antenna Mount (screw on, I'm assuming which means I'll need a weatherproof screw on cap for when I need to take the antenna off the mount)
    • GMRS Only Screw On Antenna
    • Coax Cable Recommendation (something I can use for both amateur bands as well as GMRS)
    • Connector Type that would be compatible with this radio, and maybe an amateur radio in the future (I'm not afraid of soldering)

My thoughts are I would use the GMRS mobile radio for years to come.  I am studying for my Technicians license.  If I decide down the road that I want to move to an amateur radio instead of the GMRS, I'd like to not have to re-run coax or resolder connectors and use the same antenna mount.  If this means I have to manually tune the GMRS antenna, then I'll need a proper SWR meter for GMRS.  Any recommendations on that would be helpful as well.

I guess lastly, am I over-thinking this?  I like the idea of re-using a cable and mount,  but if it's a bad idea, I'd like to know that up front.  Thanks for your advice!

    tl:dr:

Some CCRs are really bad clinkers while others work reasonably well.  That's the same situation as anything coming out of China, though.  They'll make anything you ask them to make at whatever price point you want it to meet.  So read reviews and test reports on this (or any) radio.  If they work alright and seem well built then don't worry about the architecture.

    Long answer:

Don't get wrapped around the axle about SoC or similarly the terms direct conversion, direct sampling, SDR, hybrid, double conversion, heterodyne, etc.  The words are thrown around indiscriminately.  Basically a good radio is a good radio no matter its architecture while a bad radio will be bad regardless.  The RDA1846 chip that most of these radios use can perform adequately if the design is sound otherwise.  It's one particular frequency agile wideband RF chip but not the only by far.  There's tons of them now, some that cover HF to SHF.  One I'm familiar with is an Analog Devices part that can TX and RX on 2x2 MIMO from 70 MHz to 6 GHz.  It's not something intended for cheap consumer HTs though.  The chip is $300 alone and a drop-in SoM (System on a Module) is $1,600...

You might generalize saying it's easier to make a straight superheterodyne radio that performs fine but is less expensive.  Mostly it's reliability and build quality that suffers.  After decades of engineering churn there's not much fat left to cut in the fundamental architecture to significantly improve performance so all you're left with is using cheaper components.  So it won't last as long being tossed around but the actual RF performance is indistinguishable otherwise.   But such a radio is inflexible and doesn't lend itself to adaption to something else.

DSP techniques are still evolving and proprietary.  So there's a lot more ways to screw up a direct conversion radio.  Algorithms and firmware are where established companies (Motorola, Harris, Yaesu, Kenwood, whomever) can really distance themselves from competitors.  Motorola is probably using direct conversion in the XPR7000 and EVX models and it works well.  But then again no one other than Motorola knows really what is inside their ASICs to know for sure.

But the guts don't matter, they aren't able to bend the laws of economics, physics or engineering.  What matters is where the rubber meets the road - does it work or not?  And if they can do it other companies can, too.  In fact Harris builds most of the high reliability radios for the military and one portable example, the AN/PRC-152 (Falcon III), is a highly frequency nimble (covers 30-512 MHz and 762-870 MHz without gaps) 5 watt TX SDR that can do several analog and digital modes, some of which (like APCO-25, amongst other things) were added with a firmware upgrade after the radio was accepted and put into service.  That sort of flexibility is why SDR is where it's at.  The reason these CCRs proliferate is once a basic design is done they can adapt it to just about anything.  That comes with up- and downsides.  They can just make them faster and cheaper or they can add interesting form factors or features, whatever.

So you can keep it compact most of the time and just pull it out when you need more gain.   I also have the Nagoya 771 and the performance (extended) is comparable but I like that the Smiley can be made compact and still work as good or better than the rubber duck.

Be sure and check for the proper connector selection here.  https://www.smileyantenna.com/Articles.asp?ID=253

I have a ham radio 70cm "440MHz" band mag mount that I use in the car.  The SWR tests fine on my GMRS.

WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A VUNERABILITY OF A TELESCOPING SECTION ANTENNA IS THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGE WHILE EXTENDED, POSSIBILITIES FOR TO STAY TUNED FOR GMRS AFTER DAMAGE OR REPAIR?

Has anyone used this aftermarket antenna? I was considering it as an upgrade to the factory antenna on my 905G. If it has no significant improvements though I'll probably just stay with the factory antenna... thx

Welcome Mtnman to the group and GMRS.  This post has info on your question.  I get more distance with this 15.4 inch antenna BUT is long and if you carry your 905G I would stick to what it comes with...   I mounted my and it works well in my Jeep out the windshield and I have the roof off here in WNC where the real NC mountains are joking.  I got mine from https://www.buytwowayradios.com/nagoya-na-771g.html and you want the SMA Female and it says it is in stock.  Call them to confirm that is correct antenna and connection.

I just recently received my FCC GMRS license.  I am new to GMRS and reviewed many radios, purchasing a Radioddity DB20-G mobile unit.  I am planning on installing the radio in my truck and was looking at the Midland Micro Mobile Ghost MXTA25 and mounting it to a ditch light bracket; however I currently am using a LT-UT72 19 Inch,VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Super Loading Coil antenna and I am not getting any reception.  Any idea on the best antenna to use?

I live on the Southern Tip of Illinois and see that there is a repeater about 50 miles away in Harrisburg, Illinois and a couple repeaters in Western Kentucky. How do I access these repeaters or are they too far away?

Any advice for the GMRS beginner would be greatly appreciated.

I HAVE A FEW DB20-G INSTALLED THAT I SUPPORT.  THE BEST COMBINATION FOR THAT RADIO I HAVE FOUND IS THE NAGOTA UT-7G Nagoya UT-72G High Gain Magnet Mount GMRS Antenna (462-467 MHz) (buytwowayradios.com) FOR THE ANTENNA AND THE Amazon.com: Pyramid PS9KX Universal Compact Bench Power Supply-5 Amp Linear Regulated Home Lab Benchtop Converter w/ 13.8 Volt DC 115V AC 70 Watt Input, Screw Type Terminal, 12V Car Cigarette Lighter: Car Electronics FROM  ANAZON TO USE IT INDOORS WITH A COOKIE PAN FOR A GROUND PLANE UNDER THE ANTENNA.  TOO HOT OUTSIDE HERE NTHIS TIME OF YEAR.

IF YOU END UP NEEDING A BETTER ANTENNA CONSIDER THE NAGOYA 770G ALSO TUNED FOR GMRS Authentic Nagoya NL-770G High Gain Mobile GMRS Antenna (UHF Male) (buytwowayradios.com) AND CHECK OUT DB20-G GMRS Radio Review and Tutorial - YouTube

I have two KG-805G for the girls as it light and simple to use...I use for myself a KG-905G as I like the groups scan and all the other high tech features.... more then the girls will ever use.  I got them from https://www.buytwowayradios.com and will tell you I had an issue with the first 805G as I THOUGHT IT WAS DOA.  It was not, I used CHIRP software and blow away some key files in the config.  So I got my second 805G and backed up the factory settings first before changing anything...  Then took the factory setting backup and wrote to the first 805G and fixed it... Sent email to https://www.buytwowayradios.com and said it is working now and stop shipping replacement which they pulled off the truck.

I have told others on this forum if you did not do a backup PM me with your email address and I will send it to you.  In fact the President of https://www.buytwowayradios.com email me and asked if I would send him a copy of this backup file for his support team as many of his customers use CHIRP in my case on a Mac no PC's.  CHIRP is not a standard programing software but IMHO better to use for programing over the Wouxun PC program which is limited on cut and paste etc.

Hope this helps... I believe that a radio is a personally choice...  you pick what is best for you and your family.  I like FCC Part 95 certified radios, with good sound and range.  Most importantly a firm that will stand behind the product even when the user like me screws up, no questions asked.  I did feel bad not doing a backup before changing program on radio... I know better being in the software business.  Under full discourser I have twin adopted Chinese daughter here in the USA, now 50 yo with grown kids.  China government is so screwed up but the people are more or better American then us.  Some of the firms in China want to make good radios to sell in US and live under the Communist dictator government.  What I'm saying is I will support free Enterprise even in a Communist country.  Capitalism will win over any other isms.  Off my soap box, thank you for letting me to vent.  OK if Forum ADM delete my post.
