My granddaughter is at the age where she enjoys talking to me on GMRS using her parents radio or sometimes her grandmother's handheld. Good times.

It must be nice to have money to just throw away like that.

I know a guy here on this forum that regularly/ALWAYS gets 200+ miles on all of his radios.. He apparently does this by purchasing every radio ever made and if it does not get 200+ miles, he just throws it directly into the trash.. All of his "friends" also do the same thing, so this method obviously works.

WRHS218 got a reaction from Raybestos in GMRS Repeater Requests
There are a few repeaters in my area that I have requested access. One of them I requested access twice in a year and a half (private repeater). The owner states that you have to give him certain information including a valid phone number so he can conduct a phone interview. Of course, I never heard from the owner. I don't care enough to look into it more. The rules for requesting access was a red flag but I tried anyway. On the other hand I have requested access on some other repeaters, not in my area, and received permission in a day or two.
If there is an open repeater listed, with tones, that requires you to request access and I don't hear from the owner I will just use the repeater. If questioned by the owner I will then ask permission on the air. That has never happened. I don't understand why there are still owners that have repeaters listed as open, with the tones listed, yet they still want you to request access.
I don't tend to play well with others and my use of radio is to make quick contact with people I know for a specific purpose. If repeater owners go the route of drama I don't get mad, I just erase the info from my radio and move on. It is their machine so they can have their rules. On the HAM side, if some moron wants to critique my radio usage I just finish my transmission and ignore them.  I don't use radio, Amateur or GMRS, for meeting random basement dwellers in the darkest hours of the night so I don't really run into those type of repeater people very often.
    Don't take it too seriously.

I have not had any problems with my Q10H yet. But I have had other brands of radios act up. though usually just reloading stuff fixed them. I've had Icom and Yaesu radios have glitches too.

I thought about that too, but thankfully a reset fixed it. I don't think a reset will help with kill or stun.

I think both radios need to be the same brand or use the same compander tech AND compander has to be enabled on all radios wishing to benefit from the tech.  Otherwise, it sounds worse instead of better.  It's been awhile since I read about it and I don't know anyone personally who uses it due to the compatibility issues.

My first thought is if the radio received a remote stun or kill. Page 108, 109 in the manual. Though random glitch is probably more likely.

The new fangled radios are all computers now.  And just as any computer might need the occasional reboot so do radios.  Having to do the reset is just a step farther.  I had to do it on one of my Wouxun radios that was acting weird.  Fixed it up and I just hooked it up to the computer and reflashed my channels back into it.  5 minutes and done.
But this would be a serious problem if it was an emergency.  Good old fashion radio guts with no computer can have an advantage sometimes.  Same goes with automobiles.

The logical assumption is that there’s are CTCSS tones or DTCSS codes somewhere that you don’t realize are there, either on the FRS radio or on your other friends radios, or the radio is transmitting on frequencies the other radios are not receiving. We can’t really know for sure without more information, such as you posting a screenshot, a chirp file, maybe a device like the SW102 showing the output power and actual frequencies of the transmissions that others are not receiving. But we can speculate a bunch:
    Bad programming.
    Bad firmware.
    Both.
But here’s something to try.  When it’s transmitting and other people’s radios don’t seem to receive it, put your UV5R into “scan for tones” mode to see if it’s actually sending with a tone that the other radios filter out.

O,K. The bag works fairly well, Put both cell phone and my Hytera HT in the bag.  Tried calling my cell phone, no ring, straight to voice mail. So i'm assuming the cell phone is protected.   The HT???,,  Within a few feet of the bag i can break the squelch with another radio, 20-30 feet away, no go.  My guess, the bag is supressing 50-60 dB of signal.   Would be interesitng to take the bag with cell phone in close proximity of a cell tower to see what it does.. Maybe someday, but right now, gonna go grab some breakfast.  😅

That would be a full violation of the eff sea seas rules/regulations.  I can't imagine those breaking the law would decide to use these frequencies illegally and for illicit purposes.  They should have their licenses takes away.  As soon as you here them ID themselves you should write it down and report them.
