  2. That's what I hear when scanning in Los Angeles: Lots of traffic control and other related activities, presumably at construction sites, and Wal-Mart on Green Dot. Some personal and Spanish language on MURS 1-3
  3. Detachable antennas are acceptable if you have a GMRS License. They are only prohibited for up to 2 watt FRS HTs.
  4. I have to admit that I had no knowledge of what that was until I stumbled one day on a "net" on one of the GMRS Channels between 1-7 and asked them what was the net about! He did give me a link to go read more about what they offer and I find it very interesting. That being said, I have not chosen to join these groups in any specific way. I just remember the Mexico City earthquake of 1985, which killed more than 10,000 people. Many of us Hams here in Los Angeles, including myself, worked to receive messages from those in Mexico City to let family and friends here in Los Angeles know that they were safe (or otherwise). I would receive my share of these messages and phone to the local LA phone number to pass the message and usually they would ask me to forward a response back to Mexico City, which I was happy to do over this net. So my comment was that I have activated Channels 8-14 on my DB20-G mobile GMRS transceiver, not so that I can communicate on those channels on a day to day basis (even at Low power). But in the unlikely event I hear a station on one of those channels requiring assistance, I can crank up to 18 watts to hopefully have them be able to hear my response offering assistance.
  5. As I am sure most of us know, Channels 8-14 were classic FRS only channels at 0.5 watts and were added to GMRS with the same power limitation in 2017. I once asked someone on this Forum the question of their value and I was told they used them in situations where all of their users were in close proximity of each other, and they experienced less interference from others. I am just glad I can access them when and if I need to respond to someone with emergency traffic on those channels.
  6. I've heard of a Prolific chip in USB cables, but not prolific mode. Is that the same as Promiscuous Mode in DMR? If so, for $69, hard to beat the Radioddity RD-5R DMR/analog HT, which is their GD-77 in a UV-5R style case and now there is the OpenGD77 Firmware project that supports this radio, too.
  7. I would think that a "net" on a paid membership repeater system would allow non-members to participate in the net. That is how it works on the PAPA System Ham radio repeater system when it hosts nets. Certainly, you could check into the net and then politely ask that question.
  8. Thank you for that information. So, if I can hold my radio in my hand, I can transmit on Channel 8-14: I think it is historical as well: before 2017 only FRS radios could transmit on these channels at 0.5 watts, and in the 2017 reorganization, GMRS licensees gained these privileges as well.
  9. Who said this? Certainly not the FCC: The popular answer provided in these venues commonly focuses on the wattage limitation imposed by the FCC on these channels. The typical line of reasoning is that these channels have a one half watt transmit limit, and high powered mobile radios simply can't reduce their power to such a low level, so therefore they can't transmit on those channels legally. While the wattage theory does make some sense, and the inability to go below one watt may indeed be the case with some mobile radios, this answer is not actually correct.
  10. Where is your quoted material from?
  11. That is why those photos of The Proud Boys and The Oath Keepers using Baofengs during the J6 insurrection are just classic! ?
  12. Some people like to have the last word. I'm happy to let you do that, but if you keep injecting new information that is either: 1) incorrect; or 2) insulting or otherwise used to give a negative impression... Then you are going to get a response from me. You've had a chip on your shoulder about my responses right from the start, but so be it; that's why Heinz makes 57 varieties! You opening post appeared to me to be based on either a bad choice of radios or incorrect assumptions or both. When I asked which radios you were referring to, your response was "No." When you responded to another than you use the GM-30, I replied "wrong radio" which is factually correct for what you asked in your opening statement. Your response was: "Chill out dude! You asked me to list all the radios I've looked at, which I correctly foresaw would lead to a flame about brands." Wrong twice: no one here is flaming about brands! Of course there are no technical GMRS limitations for what you desire and you even acknowledge that in your opening statement: "For almost all the radios I've looked at, i'd need to go into the programming and rename CH 4 "CLUB" and add my CTCSS codes, thereby losing the generic CH 4." It is just some manufactures sell ketchup and others sell mustard! Do you really have to come on a GMRS forum to confirm that advertising and marketing material over-sells their capabilities (500 channels)? If you do, then have the patience to read differing responses to your concern. If you are insulted by these facts and feel like you have to lash out at me with name-calling, slurs, misconceptions and/or insults, then that reflects on you, not me. But given how you said in your Opening Post: "Please, don't go on a rant about FCC type certs, i just want to understand the mechanics of it" it is clear to me that you were already in a defensive posture about how some of us were going to respond to you. So to put it in your phraseology: And PS: If you need more information about 500 channels and Tones, etc., watch @OffRoaderX's video: Privacy Tones, Sub-Channels & CTCSS Codes
  13. No, that is NOT what you posted; but you are entitled to ask additional questions, just not in the misleading pretext that you had already asked them before: The way I showed you to program your GM-30 allows you to talk to both CLUB members and non-Club members with the same "CLUB" settings in Channel 4 without having to "keep entering and deleting the CTCSS codes anytime I wanted to use CH4 with non club members." *You now want to add another channel 70 to do the exact same thing as Channel 4... And, Jeff Lebowski is The Dude!
  14. As Ducky said in "Pretty in Pink"
  15. That's MR DUDE to you! And when you ask me for advice about the Radioddity DB20-G, that I do own (the clone Anytone AT-779UV), my answer will be: And here's an early Christmas gift to you:
  16. Ask for a refund! ?
  17. I foolishly googled: barn system
  18. When I asked you to let us know which radios you are considering, you declined; but yet told another inquirer that you have the GM-30. While I have a clone of the GM-30, the Pofung P15UV, I realized that I am not the best person to advise you about the GM-30 and deleted my responses. Good luck to you with your GM-30.
  19. Ah: Bay Area Repeater Network = BARN... I thought maybe it was covering the Central Valley agricultural areas.
  20. No matter how many question marks you put in your question, does not make it more important than any other question. Since you will not supply us with the factual basis to your inquiry, I must answer your question with my anecdotal experience with those radios that I have purchased and/or used: You're using the wrong radios.
  21. Please provide a link to the "BARN" system in California. Google did not find it on its first page
