New model Baofeng appears to be a great improvement
MichaelLAX replied to jc1240's topic in Amateur Radio (Ham)
And here it is: Leader of Oath Keepers and 10 Other Individuals Indicted in Federal Court for Seditious Conspiracy and Other Offenses Related to U.S. Capitol Breach Bringing a CCR to violently demonstrate at the Capitol of the United States of America! Have you NO shame?!?? -
I shied away from D*Star because I did not like the idea that a private party (Japan Amateur Radio Society) owned the technology and licensed it to ICOM. Later DMR was based upon the public domain TDMA digital technology. When DMR came to my attention, I discovered, to my delight, that Radioddity converted their GD-77 into a Baofeng UV-5R style case and hence all my Baofeng accessories would work (primarily my high capacity batteries) and for only $69! With 3 DMR repeaters within range of my home shack, I have not yet dipped my toes into "hotspot" technology. About a year ago, a Ham in Australia developed OpenFirmware technology for both the GD-77 and RD-5R and as soon as I find some experimental time, I will be installing it. So with the RD-5R I have in the palm of my hand: Analog, DMR, 2 meters, 70 cms, GMRS, MURS and MORE! ? And did I mention, all this for only $69!?!

Do you think that using Baofengs is mentioned in the indictment?!? 11 indicted for ‘seditious conspiracy!’ -
I went to program in some local repeaters as a programming exercise with the MXT500 software and I noticed that the DCS tone needed to "hit" a local repeater is missing from the list provided by the Midland software! Another Midland "feature?"

The original repeater! ? -
Ah, you're right, again I did not read what was right in front of me: Tx(400 - 489.995MHz) Still, 70 cms would be of interest somewhat. I wasn't present in the Waiting Room for the Anytone/Radioddity/Retevis Ra-25 series of radios, but they are Part 95 certified and easily "opened" whether by using a keypad sequence, or right there in the included CPS software. So at least they started life as GMRS certified! ? UPDATE: I'd LOVE a db50-G!
-
I'm only looking to be impressed if it can be opened to transmit on 2 meters and 70 cms, like my 20 watt Anytone AT-779UV a/k/a Radioddity DB20-G! Then $399 for ~50 watts will be a might tempting! ?
-
DUH! No driver install needed for me: I don't have a Midland, I just like to play with CPS software and help out when needed. I'm booting Windows as we speak and going to try it out!
-
So the MXT600 will meter out at 50 watts?!? ?
-
Can you please post a download link: I am having trouble finding the MXT500 flavor.
-
Just curious, because you do not show it fired up: what voltage do you apply to it to get these results? 12 vs. 13.x? My home power supply delivers 13.9 volts to my Anytone AT-779UV for its ~20 watts output; my car, only 12.5v.

I don't find your response persuasive. FRS has got nothing to do with it. Even their own marketing information contradicts their statement about "15 high powered GMRS channels: At best, it's a typo; at worst, they're idiots! -

Last time I checked, 15 plus 8 = 23! If you think their statement of "15 High powered GMRS channels" is correct; please show us the mathematics behind it: -

Sharing of personal experiences that he claims to be probative of a much larger point, but which are easily shown to be completely wrong, have no value other than to mislead others. Now if he wants to share how he just has bad luck on the road; then your point is well taken! There is an expression I heard long ago that still holds true today: Don't confuse bad luck with irony! (Alanis Morissette, "Ironic")

50 Watts AND 15 High Powered GMRS Channels?!? I can understand a claim of 8 High Powered Channels (Channels 15 - 22); or even 16 High Power Channels (Channels 15 - 30), but 15?!? I thought we already had a thread on the Midland MXT500; does it deserve two?!? -
I'm shocked to discover POLITICS going on among Politicians! ?

That's why they invented the word: Anecdotal AND: "Never say Never!" ("not once") -- It's SO easy to disprove! @tweiss3and @marcspaz ?

You have a complete misunderstanding of the function of the "monitoring 520" sticker (presumably 146.52, the national simplex calling frequency for 2 meters): He is telling YOU that if you want to start a conversation with him, shout out to him on 146.52! The amount of chatter and/or peeps on that frequency at any particular time is irrelevant.

Radioddity GM-30 battery eliminator
MichaelLAX replied to dirkvan's question in Technical Discussion
I am not sure where @WyoJoepurchased his battery eliminator and/or TYT-88UV, but I purchased my TYT-88UV at Lets Get Ready ($34 plus free shipping plus LGR can give you the codes to open up the 88UV so that it not only transmits on 2 meters and 70 cms, but GMRS and MURS too) and they did not seem to have the "ribs" that Joe references (see photos below). I purchased my GM-30 clone, the Pofung P15UV for $30 at Amazon). Both the TYT-88UV and the Pofung P15UV come with a charging cup for the battery (and wall wort for 110v) as well, so this is an inexpensive way to get such a charging cup with another handy HT to have as needed as well! Joe pointed out to me that the updated Radioddity GM-30 firmware and CPS software work with my P15UV, as well! So I have the 88 in my car as a backup HT (and CTCSS/DSC tone scanner) and I gave the P15 to my 10 year old grandson. -
