Methinks many Part 95 certified radios can receive outside of GMRS (but of course, not transmit) and even act as Public Service scanners. I'm pretty sure my Pofung P15UV (clone of Radioddity GM-30) can do this, but I gave it to my 10 year old Grandson to try and spark a bit more interest from him in lieu of his FRS "bubble wrap" HTs. I know my Anytone AT-779UVs can do this. Thinking of ways to get more Hams interested in GMRS before they commit to a GMRS hardware expenditure; and got your interest peaked! Now how about GMRS/MURS crossband?!? hahaha ? Admittedly hard to find a MURS radio that also receives UHF.

Here's a hypothetical: If a licensed Ham programs his 70 cm rig to transmit on 446.0 MHz and receive on 462.5625 and a licensed GMRS user programs his HT to transmit on 462.5625 and receive on 446.0, is their conversation within the FCC Rules for both services?

You just got your GMRS license, now you want your own repeater?

Three questions: 1) How long does it take before I become an established GMRS user; and 2) If experimenting is to be frowned upon on GMRS, wouldn't it be better for you to explain to us less-established GMRS users, what established GMRS users use GMRS for? and 3) What is the difference between an established GMRS user and an established GMRS user ID? ? -
Where's that?

James: I notice using the MAP function on this website that for Dayton there is a repeater on 462.625 with a PL (that I will not share in public with non-members, but if you go to the Map function and click on Tipp City 675 and scroll down the information listed on the center of the map, you will find the PL), whose owner is shockdls and his email address is listed on his Profile page. Interestingly enough, if instead of using the Map function, you go to Repeaters and do a database search for Dayton, Ohio, the following two additional repeaters come up: Dayton 575 Dayton 700 Belt and suspenders, I suppose! ?

Not a very satisfying result from my further inquiries to Radioddity Support. Radioddity's first response to my request for a firmware installation tool: When I responded: The following was received by me early this morning:

ANYONE NOTICE KG-935G SOFTARE PRINT BUTTON?
MichaelLAX replied to TOM47's topic in Equipment Reviews
First I purchased the Pofung P15UV for about $26 because it would scan tones and was Part 95 certified and it was a clone of the Radioddity GM-30. Then I discovered the TYT-UV88 for $30 as a Ham radio that also scanned tones and could be opened up to transmit. I use this in addition to my Anytone AT-779UV mobile to go GMRS/Ham war-driving to find repeaters on both GMRS and the Ham bands. At the end of the day I am not sure I really need an HT that has that much sensitivity; but for sure it would have to work on 2 meters, 70 cms, GMRS and MURS. I'll think about it some more. -
I am beginner, got my call sign and radio; Now What?

ANYONE NOTICE KG-935G SOFTARE PRINT BUTTON?
MichaelLAX replied to TOM47's topic in Equipment Reviews
Does Wouxun have a super-het UHF/VHF Ham HT that can be opened to transmit on GRMS and/or MURS? I recently purchased the TYT-UV88 and opened it but it clearly has $30 limitations -
ANYONE NOTICE KG-935G SOFTARE PRINT BUTTON?
MichaelLAX replied to TOM47's topic in Equipment Reviews
This "trick" is for the 935G, correct? Are you saying that this trick will allow the 935G transmissions on non-GMRS frequencies, but you advise us not to do that? Is the 935G also VHF and does this trick work on VHF, too? As I recall, the 935G is not a superheterodyne receiver, but a SOC; is that correct? -

But immensely valuable (with no legal "dubiosity") during an emergency! Are you the "IanM" that posts reviews on Amazon? -
See the firmware in the post above and let us know if you can figure out how to install it!
-
Perhaps, indeed! I read through the Question and Answers section on Amazon about this rig and indeed, Radioddity kept responding to users who needed a firmware update to email them (without posting an email address - hahaha). Having communicated with Radioddity on past products I have purchased from them, I wrote them last night and in the wee hours of the morning, Nora replied: I responded to her on my inability to use P51 CPS programming software to update this firmware, because the program will only open XML files and this file has a KDH extension. During the interim, here is the firmware file and maybe someone else can figure out how to install it: UV-5X_P51UV_M51_V01_210427.kdh

Whats with repeater users needing permission on GMRS?
MichaelLAX replied to w4thm's topic in General Discussion
With all due respect to those forum dwellers that love to debate endlessly: "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" I'll accept the FCC as the best source for my position that there are 30 GMRS channels: Q.E.D. FCC - General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) This is my last word on this subject in this thread! -
Back in the early 60s, I was a member of the Skokie 6 Meter Indians (AM - next door to Evanston) -- I bet that group changed its name a long time ago! WELCOME to GMRS!

Whats with repeater users needing permission on GMRS?
MichaelLAX replied to w4thm's topic in General Discussion
There is a person, let's call him Person A, that I enjoy communicating with at the west end of the San Fernando Valley about 15 miles due west of me. He is in the shadow of the usual repeaters that would be available to us, so we need to communicate Simplex. But 5 watts will not do it, so I need a channel that will allow me to use my 18 watt High setting. Of the choices between 15 and 22, Channel 20 is our best choice, as none of the major repeaters available on 675 can be heard in the West Valley. There is another person, Person B, who lives near San Diego, 110 miles away to my southeast and I can use the Santiago Peak 675 repeater on Channel 28 to communicate with him. I cannot communicate with Person A on Channel 28 and I cannot communicate with Person B on Channel 20. There is no way I can be convinced that GMRS only has 22 channels available for our use; because in reality it has 30! -
Both of those radios only receive FM (narrow or wide). I am not sure of the receiving limits of the GM-30, but the DB-20G can be opened up from GMRS to receive: 136-174 and 400-470 MHz. I did find this Glossary, but some of your acronyms are not defined: Radioreference Database Glossary

Looking at some Los Angeles frequencies: I see FM, and NFM for Wideband and narrow FM AM for primarily aircraft; and P25 for digital, P25 mode.

Whats with repeater users needing permission on GMRS?
MichaelLAX replied to w4thm's topic in General Discussion
Lastly, if I am having a simplex conversation on Channel 15 with a FRS user, he lacks the channel capacity to join me on the repeater on Channel 23; he only has 22 channels and is missing Channels 23-30! In short: FRS has only 22 channels; while GMRS has 30. So if you only program your radio to Channels 1-22; you're missing out on a lot of other communication, a result to which you are also entitled ? Admittedly, my original comment was said somewhat tongue in cheek! -
Radioreference.com? It seems to be offline right now when I try it.
-
Unfortunately, for me, that link only gets me a "setup.exe" file like it did last time, which only installs a CPS programming program and does not include any updated firmware. I guess we have come to a dead end for @jlwilkers and perhaps he can reach out to Radioddity, or wherever he purchased his UV-5X from, to obtain the updated firmware (and perhaps post it here when he obtains it).
-
Here is where I am at a loss, not having an actual UV-5X to program and why @jlwilkers is frustrated and asking the question about downloading a firmware update. The UV-5R is notoriously unable to make any change to a PL on an already memorized channel. You must first delete the channel #, go to VFO, create the new channel with the different PL and then memorize this new channel into the old channel #. BTECH recently released their version of the Tri-Band Baofeng, the UV-5x3 which finally allows for these changes to already memorized channels (I have the older Radioddity version, called the UV-5Rx3, which still has this problem): So, if the solution is to "update" the firmware, then @jlwilkers is indeed correct in needing to find a download of, and a tool to install, this updated firmware and we must help him find it!
