Really?! There is that much "everything else on that frequency" in Wyoming?
-
If I understand your point correctly, you are assuming that a FRS Radio has the same receiving sensitivity as a 50 watt GMRS radio and that is not the case.
-
Spoken like a true engineer!
-
If they come without any Tones preprogramed into the Channels and you can program tones from the keypad, you have the latest firmware
-
During an emergency, you can transmit as many watts as you need on Channel 3; although admittedly most Part 95 certified GMRS radios will not allow you to transmit more than 5 watts on Channel 3. But I acknowledge your point!
-
Snap up the $30 TYT-UV88 while they are still available! Compatible battery with your Radioddity GM-30!
-
Be careful: Newly manufactured Baofeng UV-5Rs do not allow transmission outside of the Ham bands. That is why they came out with the UV-5X(G) for GMRS.
-
You sure, @lscott, you are an electrical engineer and not an attorney!?! You sure enjoy being argumentative! Not that there is anything wrong with that! ?

For $30 and free shipping Let's Get Ready sold me the TYT-UV88 Ham Radio HT and told me the codes to open up transmission on other bands. It is very similar to the Radioddity GM-30 (and the Pofung P15UV GMRS only HT, which I purchased from Amazon previously) I initially purchased both for the ability to use it to scan CTCSS and DCS tones.
-
While still cheaper for the Anytone AT-779UV at Amazon and Let's Get Ready* for $99.99; purchasing the Radioddity DB-20G is a good reference point to see if the problem is duplicated or only on the Anytone version. *The Anytone AT-779UV is not listed on the Let's Get Ready website, but they do continue to sell it, and I purchased mine from them: ordered on a Sunday, delivered on that Tuesday and free shipping. FYI: I am not affilated with LGR or receive any compensation for this post. NO affiliate link below! ?

I wondered the same thing. While a privacy code would trap out the "riff-raff" also using Channel 3 from being heard on the rescuers radios, I would think in an emergency, the rescuers want to hear everything, especially those needing rescue who don't know how to initiate a privacy code. AND after all it is Wyoming: how much riff-raff is there on Channel 3?!? ?

I agree, but I would have said it with the model numbers as I have outlined in RED

I was speaking recently on a local GMRS repeater to someone who would only identify with his last 3 digits and his first name. It turns out that the FCC database does not allow the "*" wildcard in its Callsign query; i.e. *123 So I googled it instead with his name and up his full callsign came. When I entered it in the myGMRS Callsign search, I discovered it was expired!

I spoke last night simplex to a Ham based in the Hills above Malibu and he told me their Emergency group has a grant to make Go-Boxes with the Anytone AT-779UV and a rechargeable Bienno 12v battery with a solar controller in it for distribution to homes in his area. Of course he does not have access to the Santa Ynez repeater from there, but he has not encountered any Tone problems on their Ham and GMRS repeaters.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out and in my version of the CPS software (v2.00; as well in the Radioddity versions 2.01 and 2.02) the only option available is called "Carrier." But it was not "smart" in my original programming for the split tone repeater Santa Ynez as it manually entered the default of Carrier (SQ) and I had to manually change it to CTCSS/DCS.

Alright new test: Do you have access to another transceiver such as a Baofeng UV-5R? I do and I have confirmed the following on my Anytone set to the programmed split tone Santa Ynez repeater channel 145.18 and my Baofeng set to transmit on 145.18: First test: Baofeng set to no Transmitting Tone; SINGAL(sic) set to SQ - I can hear my Baofeng audio on my Anytone Baofeng set to no Transmitting Tone; SINGAL set to CTC/DCS - I can see RF (white) on the Anytone meter, but I hear no audio Second test: Baofeng set to Transmitting Tone of 146.2; SINGAL set to SQ - I can hear my Baofeng audio on my Anytone Baofeng set to Transmitting Tone of 146.2; SINGAL set to CTC/DCS - I can hear my Baofeng audio on my Anytone (This is the result I would expect if I drove up to Santa Barbara and it should cut out local interference) Third test: Baofeng set to Transmitting Tone of 131.8; SINGAL set to SQ - I can hear my Baofeng audio on my Anytone Baofeng set to Transmitting Tone of 131.8; SINGAL set to CTC/DCS - I can see RF (white) on the Anytone meter, but I hear no audio I think your Anytone has a problem: It is only related to Firmware if the newer updated version 2.30 of the Firmware you have installed causes the problem, since I have the older v2.28 on the particular Anytone in my shack today. I think the answer must come from Andy at Anytone. Please keep me posted!

@ianM Where do you live?

I will be the first to admit I am NOT a GMRS historian! BUT: the implication of your comments is that: GMRS users are NOT allowed to find folks, whether by repeater or otherwisel they are NOT allowed to "go buy a radio and start calling for people to answer." I cannot find any justification for your assumed prohibition of such activities on GMRS and hence they are allowed to jump on GMRS to find folks, whether through repeaters or otherwise; and/or go buy a radio and start calling for people to answer, even if you personally chose NOT to do such activities. Just so we are not misleading other GMRS users reading this thread.
