  1. What will you use for power; or is the property connected to the grid?
  2. What's so long about this link? ?
  3. He knows how to open his DB-20G to transmit on the Ham bands when the times arrives.
  4. We all screw up something in the startup period! Its all a part of the learning curve!
  5. I said multiple times on this forum how much productivity I have received from the $99 retail Anytone AT-779UV, the clone of the Radioddity DB20-G And now I have a second one in my home, too! The only downside is the programming software: it is not so bad the first time you program in your favorite repeaters and Simplex channels. But when you want to easily change the order of Channel after gaining experience, there is no export/import functions to ease this change. Other than that: 18 watts, cigarette light plug, $20 add-on Mag-Mount dual band antenna, $25 Cup-Mount holder (so no drilling or holes) and did I mention it is only $99 retail!?! LetsGetReady sells it with free shipping, too! Ask Bob Yuan about it as it is not listed in their online catalog.
  6. Congratulations! Your new ticket should open up many repeaters to you in a metropolitan area: Take a look at the Anytone AT-779UV a/k/a Radiodiddity DB-20G: For $99 retail, you get 18 watts, instant ability to use base or mobile (cigarette lighter plug, fits in palm of hand and can use cup-holder mount) and easily opens up to allow 440 MHz, 2 meters and GMRS and MURS. I program in all of my favorite repeaters and simplex and scan to find some action! I love to drive to other areas and go repeater hunting and am surprised sometimes that with 18 watts at home (I have two of these for ease) with my rooftop Comet tri-bander, I can hit some of these newly discovered repeaters at home!
  7. I tried duplicating it using my microphone to hit different sequences other than A-FUN -->4-SCAN, but I so far have not been able to recreate your symptoms So far I think you were hearing Radar, but that would not be occurring on all channels.
  8. Can you be more specific as to which issues remains a problem for you?
  9. That's just a UV-5R that claims to output 8 watts; I have its clone UV-5HP. It still has the disadvantages of the UV-5R
  10. Will that dual band Ham Radio transmit on 467.575 141.3? white Mountain is above Santa Cruz?
  11. Try: RadioReference
  12. Sean: Both Callsigns are for the same Licensee in South Carolina! Maybe he knows if it will also transmit on GMRS! ?
  13. I am not aware of any way to get a Wouxun to transmit on Ham bands and GMRS; maybe this one does?! for $30 you can experiment with the TYT-UV88 which is a dual band Ham Radio clone of the Radioddity GM-30, which easily opens to transmit on GMRS (and MURS). these outperform the Baofeng UV-5Rs after you get some experience, you can upgrade to a better radio of your choice
  14. This website (myGMRS) lists the following repeater for Alexandria:
  15. I see you are in the suburbs of Winston-Salem. Using the Map function of this website, I note the following 3 GMRS Repeaters East of W-S: Summerfield 600: 1-Greensboro 675: DBR 575 (Greensboro) Program these 3 repeaters into your UV-5R and go for a drive towards them and see how well they function as you drive back. Do you know how to program your UV-5R? Have you obtained your FCC GMRS License?
  16. Yes, while not an RF type of radio, you can use the Internet, preferably through a wireless WiFi router at your home. In the final years of his life, when visiting my father, he lived up in the hills and had poor cell coverage, but he had WiFi. At that time, the only domestic cell carrier that had "wifi calling" was T-Mobile. This technology allowed my cellphone to log into the WiFi and then I had full T-Mobile cell coverage: incoming and outgoing cell calls and incoming and outgoing texting. An added benefit is that T-Mobile does not charge anything extra for WiFi Calling even when you are located outside of the United States. On my trips to England and France, again, I had full cellphone coverage, both incoming and outgoing calls and texts for no extra charge. Other carriers now have WiFi Calling, but charge when you are outside of the United States. There is also a technology known as Network Radio. I only became aware of it through a Net discussion on GMRS last Thursday night on a repeater that uses Zello for people outside of the repeater's RF range to be able to communicate through the Repeater. AND, one user told me about his less than $200 Network Radio phone, the Inrico T320 4g Internet Mobile Radio WiFi Bluetooth Radio Unlocked GSM Compatible with Zello Real PTT Android 7.0 Network Radio which allows him to put a cell service SIMM card into it to provide for both cell service as well as Network service. Let us know which solution you chose and good luck!
  17. Did you get the software to work for you? Did you try to initially "Read" from the Radio? Sometimes it comes with only 2 channels filled in but if you click the >> on the right it will open a box to allow you to program more channels.
  18. These codes must be used by you to transmit, so that the repeater will recognize you and open its receiver squelch and retransmit your signal. If they only gave you one code, the code for your reception is probably the same, if there is any reception code at all. Receiver codes are optional: If you use it, it will ONLY open the squelch on your receiver to a signal with that code. This helps if there are other transmissions on the same frequency and hence your receiver will not open the squelch to hear those other signals. But if you do not use a code, you will still receive and be able to hear the repeaters transmissions back to you.
  19. Welcome Scott! According to comments on the Midland page for those radios, even though they are GMRS radios, they will not work on the Repeater frequencies needed. I was going to suggest to drive closer to the repeater and see if you can "hit" it and then drive back home and see how long you can maintain coverage. Maybe you can borrow another GMRS HT and try this experiment before you upgrade to a GMRS radio that has repeater capability.
  20. Why would a VFO mode that allows for transmission only on a GMRS frequency disable Part 95 certification? Just wondering...
  21. As I pointed out the source was Amazon comments and that he should double check this feature, which you did for him.
  22. I think that comments about this HT on Amazon indicates that it is not water-resistant. So be sure to double check this feature. And thank you for the CAP/MARS mod links, too.
