A reminder that the Extra question pool changes either next month or July. Wait to buy any Extra study guides until they have been updated.

I passed my General test in January and went ahead and took the Extra test. I got 50% on the Extra without even studying for it. I need to start studying again for the Extra.

The new question pool is already available to download for free.
But honestly if you learn and understand the concepts in the old test you should be able to pass the new test. The concepts haven’t changed.

    Good evening,

A friend and I recently purchased the Baofeng UV 5G Plus and used CHIRP software to program some of our local repeater.  The issue we are having is when transmitting it's nothing but static.  However, when just listening we can hear others without issue.  We have programmed the appropriate Tx and Rx codes and I can see when transmitting the frequency will jump up 5 (example, repeater is on 462 and when transmitting it jumps to 467).  Anybody have suggestion on the cause or a potential solution?  This is happening on all repeaters we have programmed in the radios.

    Thanks

Are you on a repeater channel?  You will hear the repeater on the 15-22 channels but you won’t be able to transmit to the repeater. Those channels are setup for simplex and don’t allow an offset. Channels 23-30 (or whatever they’re called on the uv5g) will have the offset.

I have a Radioddity DB20-G. The antenna is a UT72G Nagoya mag base and a pyramid powersupply. I am using this as a base in an apartment on the 2nd floor. I have the antenna setting on the power supply near my sliding glass door. I'm hitting the repeater, but the person on the other end says I'm very quiet. My question is, I have a baking pan but is not magnetic but it is aluminum. Will that still work as a ground plane?

Yes, even though it is not magnetic as long as your antenna base is on it it can work as a ground plane.
Check to make sure that the hole in the microphone is clear and speak closely to it. We had one guy that was very quiet and he discovered that the mic hole was plugged.  Putting the antenna outside could also help.

Boefang BF-888 and pi3b+ Node. What size battery would be required to good run time. 5vdc for pi and 3.7 for 888?

    Thanks for help

What are the current requirements during receive and transmit?

What duty cycle do you require?

What do you consider a “good run time?”

How do you intend to provide the two different dc voltages from a 12 volt battery?

Clarification - I need the cradle / charger- entire assembly.

The cradle is CD-46.  When available it’s sold separately.  It’s apparently in poor supply.  I couldn’t find one available.

The charger for 110 volts AC is NC90b.  It’s available.

DC ground type antennas show a direct short between center pin and shield as a J-Pole does. My question is what type of polyphaser is used on DC ground type antennas? DC Pass or DC Block? Also what type is a Comet CA-712EFC collinear? Are collinear antennas DC ground type? Confused on DC pass Vs DC block polyphasers. Forgive my ignorance, and thanks for your help

Based on this white paper I believe you would want DC Block:

No I thought I was, and just in case I went to the fcc site, copied the call sign, pasted in the browser. It just keeps on saying its invalid. I had to have a call sign to create the repeater book account, which seemed to be fine.  Im a little stumped

I don’t blame you for being frustrated. I’ll report your post so Rich sees it. He’s the only one who can help. I hope it helps.

    Keep getting

"Invalid call sign pattern. Please return and enter a valid GMRS pattern into the Owner field."

When trying to add my repeater to repeaterbook. There's never been an 'owner' field so I assume its wanting the repeater call sign. But I continue to get that error over and over.

Anyone have a thought on what I've gotten wrong here? Im using the website, not the app.

Four letters followed by three numbers: in your case WSBZ540. Are you possibly putting in an O instead of a 0?

That's what I was thinking.  My fully legal hytera radios transmitting DMR would get converted to VOIP in the raspberryPI.  Brandmeister would have no play in it.  All the DMR would be local to my network, but forwarded to the network as voip, though the liveGMRS network.    If that's not legal, I'll just save up for a while and get a hotSpotRadio.

DMR is emission type FXE for voice and FXD for data, but the FCC constrains GMRS to the following:

    95.1771 GMRS emission types.

Each GMRS transmitter type must be designed to satisfy the emission capability rules in this section. Operation of GMRS stations must also be in compliance with these rules.

    (a) Each GMRS transmitter type must have the capability to transmit F3E or G3E emissions.

    (b) Only emission types A1D, F1D, G1D, H1D, J1D, R1D, A3E, F3E, G3E, H3E, J3E, R3E, F2D, and G2D are authorized for use in the GMRS. Equipment for which certification is sought under this subpart may have capabilities to transmit other emission types intended for use in other services, provided that these emission types can be deactivated when the equipment is used in the GMRS.

When scanning I came across 462.620 with people talking on it. Ive tried to get on that frequency but to no avail. I can't seem to find it when I search for it. any ideas to what I'm doing wrong or maybe they just don't like me for some reason. Is this possible a GMRS frequency? thanks for any help

Here are the officially designated GMRS frequencies:

    https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-47/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-95/subpart-E/section-95.1763

As others have said the frequency you heard is 5 kHz off from GMRS.

Thank you for the reply and advice, it is much appreciated. I have two Retevis HA1G GMRS radios coming. I was thinking about a mag base antenna to go with a mobile for my car but just unsure which one. I am trying not dive into it too fast because I would like to learn all I can. I would like to do things the right way, understand what I’m doing and not just grab a radio and jump on the air. I’d like to learn what I can, set up everything correctly and possibly make some friends along the way. Some things have already seemed a little overwhelming but I’m still excited to get into it and to be here. Thanks again!

There are a couple of small 20 watt mobile radios that are very convenient.  They’re not too expensive and they simply plug into your power port in your car. I bought the Radioddity db20g.  It was $87 when I bought it so I grabbed two. 😁

I also grabbed a couple of Midland MXTA26 antennas and Midland magnetic bases when they were on sale.  The Midland antenna is a very decent GMRS antenna, but i converted one of my db20g radios to be a dual band ham radio and the Midland antenna is not good for 2 meters.  In the end I took one of the MXTA26 antennas off the base and replaced it with a Comet SBB-5 for 2 meters and 70 cm.

I hope you enjoy the myriad possibilities of GMRS.

Hey everyone, I just got my GMRS license aprox 2 weeks ago, I'm new to GMRS radios and everything that includes. I am excited to be here as this is all new to me and just recently had a family member to order me two GMRS radios as a bday gift. I don't really know too much about GMRS radios so i hope they will be good enough to start out on. Everyone have a good day!

Welcome!  I hope you have fun!

Hey everyone, i am new to GMRS so forgive me if this is a burnt-out question. Can anyone give me some suggestions on a good mobile GMRS radio and antenna? Thanks!

How do you intend to use it?

    What's your budget?

What's your background?  Are you someone who likes diving deep into the minutiae of a tech hobby or do you want something you can plug in, stick to your roof, and plug into your cigarette lighter?

Think I overcomplicated things by mentioning a repeater.

Don't beat yourself up.  Although a repeater wouldn't increase range compared to an external antenna, it would be more convenient if he wants to move around while talking on the radio because he could just carry a handheld without being tethered by a piece of coax running to the antenna.

Hello, I have a RT-97 repeater that is setup and I want to get the repeater ID program setup for it. I am looking for a link to the repeater ID setup.

The RT-97 doesn't have one.  If you have an RT-97s there's a port that can be used to add something that will ID automatically.

He/she didn't mention anything about a repeater. But it was on those lines of thoughts. I mean when we camp, although I want to be in the trailer next to a radio. That rarely happens. Gotta cook, tend to fires or sit outside with the brew and mellow.

You’re right.  He has back problems that limit the distance he can walk so he stays close to the RV.  He wants to put up an antenna on the RV connected to his handheld and wondered what kind of antenna and cable to use.
A Midland MXTA26 antenna and magnetic mount to a steel cookie sheet on the top of the RV would be simple, but connecting with a cable might be a hindrance.
This would be a good use of a Retevis RT97s repeater.
