Hello, Randy, and Welcome to MyGMRS Forums... nice to have you with us...

One of the reasons that owners request permission of licensed users is to actually verify IF the license is active and to log the mailing address of the new user in case there are "issues" in the future. Another reason that goes along with this, is to provide a checks and balances system to keep private access code data private so it doesn't end up on the net where unlicensed hackers can get to it and create chaos,

First cruiser I was assigned in 1970 had a GE two channel radio in it very similar to the ones in your second from the last photo. Repeater Ch1 - Car to Car Ch2. Those were the days when a 600 watt ERP VHF highband repeater could be heard daily 140 miles away. No cell and pager harmonics destroying the receiver sensitivity.

Hey, Tim - if you have any pictures of the old equipment to share, save it at a place like Photobucket and place the link here in a new post. Thanks and Welcome...

Hello, Tim, and welcome to MyGMRS - Regarding several of your questions here and in the other thread, you may wish to visit the LAGGROUP main site to register there using the "Create Account" on the right center of the main page. The LAGGROUP Association covers most of your home area in Illinois. Please allow several days for activation by the administrator - his work schedule is intense some weeks. Once registered, there will be a database available to you for repeaters in your general area including owner contact data. Register through this LINK >>> http://www.laggroup.info/ You can also check our main MyGMRS Repeater List at our main MyGMRS website for your area to see if any repeaters are listed within 5 to 25 miles of your home location. Access to repeaters is generally dependent upon your portables or mobiles and the height of the repeater antenna structure that you are accessing. Once you have permission and have the proper repeater dual frequency pair and access code programmed into your equipment, you may see an 8 mile portable access and a 20 to 25 mile mobile (25watt+) range. This could be more or less depending on variables. Best of luck with your projects.

Any Experience with these setups... ?
PastorGary replied to PastorGary's question in Technical Discussion
That's correct... not allowed on Part 95 GMRS or in Part 90, but I have seen this in operation on a ham repeater network MANY years ago in Maryland. Repeater # 1 was conventional. Repeater 2, some 45 miles away, was reverse in some way. Repeater 3 another 40 miles further out was conventional again. A mobile hitting repeater 1 would also trigger # 2 and # 2 would trigger # 3. Each had a 1 second difference in hold timeout. I don't know what offsets they were using because I'm not a ham and only had a passing interest after the system was mentioned by a friend. It worked, but I was told that sometimes the FM capture effect between #1 and # 3 during band openings would render the system useless. -
OK, Doug - That clears things up. If the local Frequency Coordinator Service for Part 90 operations can be contacted by the group leader, the coordinator may be able to go over Part 90 operational protocols and find a way to get a proper Part 90 system license for them, so they can get their own equipment. The Sheriffi's Department Radio Shop or contractor can help with getting the group and the coordinator together. They can either incorporate and become a non profit agency OR one ranking person in the group can get an INDIVIDUAL Part 90 license for an appropriate number of repeaters, mobiles and portables and authorize users to work their own Part 90 system under his or her supervision. Allowing unlicensed operators to use YOUR GMRS system puts a big liability target on your back... and as you mentioned, the Sheriffi's Dept. Part 90 license has nothing to do with Part 95 systems. Best of luck with things....

Hello Doug and Welcome to MyGMRS. The Search and Rescue group is in technical violation. Each member of the group must have their own individual license - unless the system is being used in a true emergency. Then stipulations in 95.143 must be followed until the emergency is downgraded. If you know who owns the repeater, you may wish to have a face to face with them to do a very friendly reminder of the regulations. IF the search and Rescue group is INCORPORATED with elected officers, they can apply for a Part 90 license and do it the right way. If it is just a casual group of volunteers, then they have some additional issues to overcome regarding Part 90 licensing. Please keep us posted on things.

Simplex repeater dual antena seperation
PastorGary replied to truevil's question in Technical Discussion
Hello John, and welcome to MyGMRS. There are some technical factors that dictate spacing without using a duplexer, so if you can give us an idea of the brand and model of repeater and the antennas that you are considering, we can look at the RF characteristics of that equipment and be a bit more precise in our answer. A "general" rule is 30 feet, but that may vary with regard to specific installations using specific equipment. Thanks. -
As I understand it, after the ceremony, many guest antennas lined up on the walkway and gave the happy couple a 'standing wave'....

Patrick - Welcome to MyGMRS and thanks for your feedback. Our Administrator will check out your post soon and get back to you.

Around my area burying hardline or coax is not a good idea because the frost line in this area is at just about 6-1/2 feet. Unless the cable is inside 1-3/4 inch conduit there will be expanding and contracting of frozen ground in November and in March and cable for communications gets cut up, so it is just not run underground here. In John's area, I don't believe that the frost line is as deep as it is here, but still exists. I have heard that running even the best transmission line inside thick wall electrical conduit can create some really wild SWR's.... Never had that experience personally, but it may affect the inductance component of the cable and result in an impedance change.
