  1. Matty - Thanks for stopping by here at MyGMRS. The FCC database takes up to 36 hours to update. When you are able to register later today or tomorrow, set up your account here and you may wish to start a new inquiry thread in the General Discussions area about your needs. You will probably get many suggestions from our very experienced membership. In the mean time, if anyone has recommendations, please post in this thread until Matty can get registered here. Welcome to MyGMRS...
  2. Amazon has some issues with non technical persons editing and publishing technical descriptions. Some of their tech data can be misleading if you don't look very carefully and reason logically as to exactly what they are trying to say. If in doubt, go directly to the manufacturer's website for tech data.
  3. Tom - in a day or two when the FCC database updates and the MyGMRS software can verify your new license, please register at our main website located in the link below. Once you are registered there, you can establish a user account here at the Forum where we can better interact with you about any operational questions that you may have. 5. Thanks...
  6. Thanks, John... please keep us advised.
  7. Ken - When the software catches up with the FCC database and you decide on a permanent username and can register at the main site and here in the Forum, please let us know what your new username will be. Thank you. MyGMRS Staff
  8. This posting thread is fine for your question, Dave. `
  9. Averages lately are running 2 to 5 weekdays before it shows up in your account.
  10. You may even pick up some neighborhood baby monitors...LOL...
  11. ` You mean that it looked a little like this? - - - http://img.izismile.com/img/img1/20081222/nuclear_power_02.jpg
  12. If you follow the statement in your first paragraph above, you will be in compliance. Not sure what type of equipment you are using, but if you are using 2 to 4 watt portables simplex, not many persons will hear you anyway...
  13. We noted a fairly short server issue this morning (Oct. 18). Rich took care of the necessary maintenance and we're back up and running.
  14. No paid memberships at MyGMRS. This software version has a break-in point for that title regarding a "post count" and length of time being a member. The Moderators here do not have access to that system, so we can not tell you exactly what those two parameters are. You can go to the main Info site and PM Rich D. through the Contact button to ask him, if you wish.
  15. Ken - From what I gather, your radios are not repeater capable. In other words, in order to trigger a repeater, the radios transmit 5 Mhz higher than the receiver frequency and usually with a selectable access code that the repeater needs to turn on. As an example, if a repeater is operating on the frequency pair of 462.550 out / 467.550 in with an access tone (CTCSS) of 71.9, and your bubblepack radios are on "channel 15" ( 462.550 both T & R ) with or without any CTCSS, you will not activate the repeater and if someone else does use the repeater, your radios will not interfere with that operation because of the power differences between the repeater output and yours. Just make certain that if you do use "channels 15 to 22" in your radios that you ID with your callsign after each communications string and anyone hearing you will know that you are licensed. If you ever upgrade to repeater capable radios, then before you do access someones repeater, get permission first.
  16. Thanks, Ken, and Welcome to MyGMRS. Now that you are a forum member, we moved your thread into the General area...
  17. Hello, Ken... thank you for the inquiry. GMRS frequencies are not much different from FRS - except for the output power considerations, license requirements and wideband emission being common. You already know about the ID requirements, but let us furnish you with a link to GMRS regulations so you can bookmark it for any references that you may need in the future. LINK >>> http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?rgn=div5&node=47:5.0.1.1.5 Please understand that as a licensee, you can apply for MyGMRS membership at our main website and once that is processed, you can register here as a full forum member. GMRS Usage

One license will cover everything that your immediate family wishes to do including repeater operations, either your own or a system owned by someone else used with their permission. Remember to ID your communications with your call sign after each contact is finished. You can review the stipulations here: http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=72b61b708f0ce25ea78b21b0aed4e95b&node=47:5.0.1.1.5&rgn=div5#se47.5.95_1179
  19. I just purchased an excellent quality, previously owned, Kenwood TK-380 Series Two for $75.00 from the local Kenwood dealer. This came with a like-new NiMh 1700 mah battery and the KSC-24 multi format charger. This radio is Type Certified for Parts 90 and 95 - and I'm sure that other deals like this may be available elsewhere. Also review the Kenwood TK-370G - It has very similar features.
  20. The radio in question once carried Part 90 certification and, as published in one of the Commissions websites nearly a year ago, that Part 90 cert. was revoked. The reason escapes me at the moment - anyone remember the details back then?
  21. Something that was discussed recently at a Civilian Policing Instruction Class was regarding supplemental civilian communications during a local or regional disaster or long term emergency. One of the advisors for the class mentioned a situation where an amateur volunteer group responded to a disaster scenario several years ago and brought along a 2 meter 'suitcase repeater'. Due to the heightened alert level, local Public Safety personnel saw that repeater sitting next to a van, cleared the area and sent in a bomb investigation robot to verify what it was. This took up manpower and resources that could have been utilized elsewhere for the actual emergency. IF anyone intends on using a portable repeater that will be visible to law enforcement personnel, make certain that the agency in charge of disaster coordination knows about the repeater, it's description ( and photo of it ) so no one takes the piece of equipment for a destructive device. We live in a world of suspicion and paranoia these days, so be prepared for this eventuality by listing your portable emergency communications systems with the PD or Sheriff's office technical advisor, well before any emergency takes place in your area.
  22. The Forum and the main site were both down for a couple of hours earlier today. We received a note from Rich indicating that things are back up and running again.
  23. Staff Note: As stated many times in the past, CURRENT GMRS Rules disallow the use of digital equipment on GMRS frequencies. As Paul mentioned, If a digital system is to be established, a Part 90 license will be required (and frequency coordination will be needed unless a simples itinerant frequency is selected).
  24. Hello, Ray, and welcome to MyGMRS Forums. You have that a bit backwards... understandable for a new user... To access a repeater in the GMRS service, your radio equipment transmits on the 467.XXX frequency and receives on the 462.XXX frequency. Your radio would also have to transmit the CTCSS or DPL access tone or code to trigger the repeater. Also, your radio would also usually be programmed to receive the CTCSS or DPL tone or code transmitted by the repeater to keep from hearing bubble pack radios all the time. It would help if you tell us what Brand(s) and Model(s) of radios that you have so our members can help you with Brand and Model specific info.
  25. We heard about a lady who was ripping off clients financially by holding fake seances... and giving false testimony to the police investigators. This lady, who was 4 foot 3 inches tall and weighed 85 pounds, was arrested and jailed pending a court appearance. However, she was so small that she squeezed through the bars in her cell and walked out the back door to the jail. The police put out an all points bulletin that read, "Small Medium at Large."
