Danny, GMRS is not dead - It's just that with the introduction of smartphones, may persons see no need for an alternative method of communication... that is, until the first natural disaster or civil unrest takes place in their area and cell systems don't work. Persons who use logic and have a sense of responsibility to their family do take measures to be able to communicate when all other means are inoperable or unavailable. As I understand it, the number of GMRS license applications and renewals are at a near all time high. That should say something about the direction that many persons, who do care, are taking their personal safety plans. Regarding the issue that you are having in contacting repeater owners in the Palm Springs area, the data in the main MyGMRS website is owner supplied and unless it is updated by them as changes are made, contact may be impossible. The same thing goes for the FCC database.

I'm sure that others here have that equipment as well, so we'll see if anyone who is familiar with the model can assist...

BaoFeng Mobile Dual Band 400-520Mhz 136-174Mhz Radio
PastorGary replied to TimChgo9's topic in Equipment Reviews
After spending 15 minutes in research, I was personally unable to determine if this particular radio has ANY FCC certification. Perhaps others here can expand on that issue before we promote this as a GMRS option. -
Might be helpful to list the radios in question by brand and model so members here may be able to narrow down possible issues.

This is a common occurence in many areas. With the exceptionally high concentration of transmitters these days across the entire spectrum and with more and more 'digital systems' being used, the incidences of "intermod" gets higher and higher each month. When transmitters transmit at the same time in relatively close proximity to each other, the signal beat together and produce sum and difference harmonics and sub harmonics. These random signals can pop up on or near other frequencies and tricks a "scanner" into thinking that there is a legitimate signal there to be received. Many scanners do not have the ability to block intermod and if one component of the original beat frequencies is digital, the noise that is produced in the scanner audio can be quite annoying. There may be other sources of RF contamination, but intermod is one of the high probability sources. Intermod in detail: http://www.midians.com/html/intermod-explained.php

Danny - Thanks for the inquiry - We have no additional information about owners than what they place in the listings. If they do not update info, either manually in the main site, or with the FCC for the Commission database, we have no way to provide alternate info.

Interesting project and thanks for sharing. Our Chaplain Responder group tried something similar with a Kenwood TKR820 desktop repeater with internal duplexer. We had better luck running mobiles and portables on simplex because of antenna height limitations for the portable repeater. Good luck on your project and testing and please let us know how yours works out.

MURS pre programmed equipment
PastorGary replied to PastorGary's topic in Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)
Thanks, James - Much appreciated. -
There may be some gently used Kenwood TK863G radios available in your area - These are Part 95 certified and do an amazing job. I'm partial to Kenwood because in the past 37 years of using Kenwood equipment commercially and on GMRS, I have yet to have a radio failure of any kind.

Hello, Buddy, and welcome to MyGMRS forums. You will probably receive as many different suggestions for equipment than there are members here at the Forum... Choose carefully for ergonomics and programming ease and good luck with your search.

how many gmrs licenses in your state?
PastorGary replied to blastco2's topic in Miscellaneous Topics
763 active in Wisconsin and 378 in my alternate home state of Alabama. -
Hello, Joe, and welcome to MyGMRS forums. Noticed that you just received your license a few days ago. Please go through the Equipment Reviews section of the forum when you have some time. You may find additional opinions in that area concerning the 888 series and other offerings from that company. We are not saying one way or the other as to what equipment SHOULD be used by GMRS licensed operators, however, the majority of members here use accepted Part 95 and accepted Part 90 equipment. Thanks and nice to have you here.

Hello, David, and welcome to MyGMRS Forums. I'm not aware of any members here from that area, but we can see if anyone replies in this thread. Just like to mention that your registration GMRS call sign expired in 2009 according to our database. Did you obtain a replacement license by any chance? -

Hello, and Welcome to MyGMRS Forums. The bubble pack radio range and distance claims are published under "laboratory conditions" from one wilderness mountain top to another. In real world scenarios, you can probably expect an effective range between identical radios, under average terrain situations, of 2 to 5 miles max... and in most cases quite a bit less. As Logan5 mentioned, a cell phone in a specifically designed waterproof bag is your best bet. The only way that I would rely on GMRS ONLY is to set up a temporary base station and gain type antenna at a staging area midway between your river entry and exit points and TEST the radio reception from shore all along that route BEFORE your departure and have someone stationed at that temporary base station during the trip. You also may wish to verify that there actually IS cellphone service in those areas as well - before you venture out. Rarely are any specific GMRS frequenices monitored routinely by official agencies for emergencies. That type of network simply does not exist. Best of luck and be safe...

best place to start looking for a great location for an open repeater
PastorGary replied to Steve's question in Technical Discussion
Just had a chat with a radio tech locally and he said that occasionally when a new system is added to a tower that already has more than one system installed in the same general band space, that some unwanted interaction can result. When installing a new system in an area of high RF concentration, be prepared to deal with things like this, so as not to cause problems for other system owners. -
