  1. When a repeater owner approves individual licensees to use a system, it is usually stipulated in an agreement that the approved user will follow Rule 95.119, especially subpart E, or will not be allowed to use the system. It is usually also stipulated by agreement that any approved person, using a privately owned permission-required system, will not divulge system access details info to anyone.
  2. Frank - you beat me to it by posting the alternate web link to Jim's other software. Thanks....
  3. We know that some members here occasionally use Part 90 accepted Wouxun equipment and similar radios, especially for amateur applications. The factory Wouxun software is good, but will not run properly on some operating systems. The freeware aftermarket software called "KG-UV Commander" from Jim Mitchell, KC8UNJ, seems to work well on most PC systems and it may even be more flexible than the original factory software in some applications. As far as we can tell, the Kenwood 2 pin cable, as used on TK-370G style portables, works with this software as does as the original Wouxun USB cable. The link below is being supplied as a convenience. The staff at MyGMRS takes no responsibility for any issues that might arise from the use of data supplied in this link. Please review Mr. Mitchell's disclaimer located under the Download button for additional details. http://www.kc8unj.com/kguv.html
  4. Since this is a city government system, why not just license the EMA/EOC with Part 90 equipment? Using GMRS/FRS for the purposes stated may not be reliable under some circumstances (interference from civilians) and may be abused unless everyone using the equipment is individually licensed and trained properly. I'm sure that someone in City Government already has an FRN for licensing other agencies, so a Part 90 license for a few 5 watt handi-talkies might be best all around. There are several Itinerant frequencies available that do not need frequency coordination and will probably have less outsider traffic than using FRS/GMRS.
  5. If I remember correctly, Coded CW is covered under 47CFR95.183 sub 4 - under Prohibited Communications: "(4) Coded messages or messages with hidden meanings (“10 codes” are permissible);" And also under 47CFR95.631 Sub A : Emision A1A and A2A are not listed.
  6. Occasionally when a Kenwood radio is being taken out of service and will be re-sold, a tech will clear all previous memory line programming. When powered up, "TA" (Talk Around) and 'Test' will show up in the display UNTIL new memory programming is written to the radio through the appropriate software and certain selections are made through the software "Edit" tab and "Optional Features" drop down menu. Let us know what the details are as listed on the ID plate on the rear of the radios (complete Model number and Version). With that info, we may be able to determine if these are programmable with the KPG49D software. [The Staff separated this Request by 'Haneysa' from another existing TK-880 info thread, to create a separate assist discussion.]
  7. James, those bring back memories - The Regency and Bearcat scanners were very good in their day and are still being used by some persons 30 to 50 years later. As I understand it, wideband scanners actually work fairly well on narrowband frequencies as long as the adjacent channels are not being used. However, trying to locate crystals for these vintage scanners these days may be a challenge. But, seeing a 50 year old piece of domestic equipment in operation can be rewarding - especially when showing young people these days how things were "back then".
  8. Pinned this Radio Museum thread to the top of the posting area where new members may see it more easily and participate.
  9. Moved this thread start to the Technical Discussion Area - A thread from back in 2013 may be a place to start... https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/28-wx-alerts-on-gmrs/
  10. Christopher- Welcome to the Forum. There are at least three repeater systems in or near Houston. Please log in to our main Repeater listing site for access details. Two of the systems listed are OPEN and one requires permission. The open systems are for all GMRS operators with an active license. The repeaters that require permission from the owners have contact information in their info listing. [Note: The Moderators at MyGMRS do not have current operational status of any systems listed at the main website. The listings there are up to the owners to manage and update, so any data there may or may not be accurate currently.] Main Site: http://www.mygmrs.com/browse
  11. Some chargers have a slot for the radio that is deeper than the base of the radio, so the portable can be placed toward the front of the stand without contacting the charging tabs. Other charger stands can be rotated on your table or desk so the front of the charger is facing away from you. Place the radio in that rotated charger so the radio is facing toward you and that will also cure your issue. If a portable needs charging, just pick up the portable, turn it so the face of the portable is facing away from you and place it in the charger. While the red/green led will not be able to be seen as well that way, it is just a matter of looking over the top of the portable to see the charging LED for status. This will only work if the charger stand will accept a radio backwards (some batteries have tabs that fit into charger slots to apply proper battery to charger contact pressure.) Modifying a charger by adding a blocking diode to prevent the LED from draining the portable, can create issues in the charging circuit. Your piece of paper idea could, under a worst case scenario, cause a fire. IF you must do something like that, try standard electrical tape over the contacts. Most electrical tape withstands voltage, current and heat that paper will not. This, unfortunately, will require occasional cleaning of the contacts with rubbing alcohol and a swab to remove tape adhesive residue. Best of luck with your situation.
  12. Staff Note - Deleted double post.
  13. When the 10 year Part 90 term was adopted, it was for all renewals, modifications and new applications that took place after the rule went into effect. I missed a Part 90 10 year renewal by 7 weeks back in 2000. The 10 year rule went into effect in November of 2000.
  14. The Moderation Staff has a recommendation for additional Rules analysis and discussions, now that the Commission has voted on the modifications to Part 95 - If anyone wishes to discuss the new Rules and Rules Changes, please start a new thread in this "FCC Rules Discussion" area for each individual Rule, with a reference to the Rule number, description or title in your initial post header. That way, members can easily locate Rules or Rule Changes of interest quickly rather than trying to find specific information mixed and fragmented all in one long thread. Thank you.
  15. This week's Time Travel Club Meeting will take place last Thursday at 8 PM. However, I'll have to take a rain check because the new flux capacitor for the Delorean is on back order and will not be arriving until sometime last month.
  16. Rich and the Moderators were happy to assist in clarifying the policy and procedure. The MyGMRS database updates automatically and IF the FCC data is there, we get it. However, we have no control over the speed at which they update their license database.
  17. Note to Guest Users: To participate in all Forum threads, you must be registered at the main MyGMRS.com website listed below. In order to register at the main website, you must have a valid FCC issued GMRS license and call sign. It can sometimes take up to a week for the FCC database to sync with the MyGMRS.com database, so if you try to register at the main website and get a note stating that the license listed in your application is not valid, please wait a couple days and try again. Once you are registered at the main website, THEN you can also register here at the forum. Thank you. Main MyGMRS.com website: https://www.mygmrs.com/
  18. We have found over the years that GMRS has been essentially ignored by publishers - probably due to the limited audience for such publications and the limited income that they would generate. If any members can assist with specific titles and availability of GMRS specific publications, please add to this thread. Thank you. MyGMRS Staff.
  19. * Staff Note: If the OP ever wishes to post repeater access code and frequency information in this thread, we can move the thread into the Private Discussions posting area first, so the information is viewable only by registered MyGMRS Forum members.
  20. We are pleased to announce the addition of a new Moderator here at the Forum. Scott (Jabber717) has agreed to assist in Moderating at the MyGMRS forum. We have been registering many new members at the Forum each week and we felt that an additional Moderator was needed at this time. Thank you. 21. This is the recommendation as posted in the owner's manual for MicroMobile radios regarding antenna location. A UHF antenna needs a metal surface to 'radiate' off of. The larger, the better. Your bumper choice may not provide enough surface area. Midland Data: " Installing the Antenna To get the best range from the MXT400 an external antenna (50Ω) shouldbe used. The antenna is intended to be attached to the vehicle’s roof, trunk or similar location. Specific installation requirements vary between vehicles. Use the following guidelines to install the antenna.* Where you locate your antenna does make a difference. * 1 Metal surfaces covered by fiberglass or vinyl may affect radio range. Avoid these locations. 2. Mount the antenna as high on the vehicle as possible. The higher the better. 3 . If possible, mount the antenna in the center of whatever surface youchoose. 4 . The antenna cable is 19.7 feet (6 meters) long. Be sure the mounting location will allow for connection of the cable to the radio. 5. Be sure the mounting location is clean and dry before installing the antenna. 6. Route the antenna cable through an accessible entry point, such as a rear door or trunk opening. 7. When routing the antenna cable inside the vehicle, keep the cable away from noise sources, such as the ignition system, gauges, etc. 8. Exercise care to prevent cable damage. Make use of existing gaskets, grommets and weather stripping to protect the cable along its route." Good luck with your project.
  22. You can review protocols and what is required as listed in Part 95A of the Commission Rules located in the link below. Welcome to the Forum and welcome to GMRS radio. http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=72b61b708f0ce25ea78b21b0aed4e95b&node=47:5.0.1.1.5&rgn=div5 If I remember correctly, your radio package MAY HAVE included a magnetic mount low profile antenna. Is that the antenna that you will be using in your mobile installation? There are mobile GAIN style magnetic mount antennas that may give you better performance (range) by increasing both transmit Effective Radiated Power and receiver capabilities - this is just one of many: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FRS-GMRS-4-5dB-MAGNET-MOUNT-ANTENNA-PL-259-KIT-/311666948584 Also, for members here - please review data for the 40 watt version of this radio , Model MXT400 https://midlandusa.com/product/mxt400-micromobile-2-way-radio-2/
  23. Review 47CFR95.631 sub (e) - "(e) No GMRS or CB transmitter shall employ a digital modulation or emission."
  24. If you used the "Contact" button at the main repeater list website, that is the same way that the Forum staff reaches the owner. He is the only one with Administrative access at the website and the forum. Hopefully his weekend schedule will allow him to check messages soon. Main Website: https://www.mygmrs.com/
