Do you have a 60 to 80 foot windmill tower on your property? Those work well - especially if the actual windmill blades and water pump rod is deactivated. Just use extreme caution while doing ANY tower work.

If anyone has verifiable official documentation that ANY GMRS licensee has ever been given an FCC citation for using a Part 90 Type Certified "transmitter" in Part 95 service, please add that documentation to this thread.

Refer to 95.1705 of the Rules, Section C -2 : "Any individual who holds an individual license may allow his or her immediate family members to operate his or her GMRS station or stations. Immediate family members are the licensee's spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws." They do NOT have to reside in the same household.

Let's add another possibility to the discussion... Stainless steel "L" brackets for NMO mounts - I have used these for 40 + years and never had an issue.

Using a properly mounted NMO places the antenna over a ground plane surface at a proper resonant distance and has a DC ground. If a mag mount is used, the bottom of the antenna itself is above the ground plane surface by at least an inch and the resonant length of the antenna may be off. It also has no DC ground connected to the vehicle body at that point because of paint layers, etc. From personal experience - If an NMO body mounted antenna is cut to a resonant length for lowest possible SWR, and that same cut antenna is then placed on a mag mount, the SWR will be a bit higher. If the antenna on a mag mount is then re-cut to compensate for the additional height of the mag mount above the vehicle body, the antenna will then be non resonant if placed back on a body mount NMO. I have also found that most (but not all) NMO mag mounts have factory supplied coaxial cable and PL259 that are somewhat inferior to what might be used with an NMO body mount from a frequency sensitive and loss per foot aspect.

While the Kenwood TKR820 is not antique, it is getting on in years. Had one in the 90's on 462.575/467.575 at 185 feet using a 10 db omni. Solid 42 miles with an 18 watt output. Still wish that I had it and the programmer to change the chipset. Anyone still using one of these? While it is not specifically covered in Part 95 Subpart E, you may wish to refer to the blanket specifications for all Part 95 Personal Radio Services found in Subpart A: §95.339 Operation of transmitter with external device causing rule violation prohibited.No person shall operate any Personal Radio Service transmitter to which an external device or accessory has been added such that operation of the combination results in a violation of the rules. [if a Part 90 amp is used with a Part 95 transmitter, that may be an implied Rule violation because the amp is not Type Certified specifically for Part 95 use and would not show up on the approved equipment listings.] As always, it is the responsibility of all licensed operators to follow the letter and spirit of the law. A colleague at a broadcast station in Mississippi mentioned to me that their upgrade was completed a couple weeks ago on their 2000 foot tower, by a crew that had three persons killed during an upgrade in Florida in September of 2017. https://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/three-tall-tower-workers-killed-florida-168970

If anyone has additional news of any communications that may have been affected by this incident, please log your observations here. (Amateur, business, public safety, GMRS, cell systems, microwave interlink, etc.) The PBS tower was just under 2000 feet high, so it may not be the same '1000 foot commercial broadcast tower' as listed in the data supplied above. Confirmation from local sources would be appreciated regarding interruption of any communication services.

Since no one on the MyGMRS staff is an attorney, this reply is solely based upon FCC wording and common interpretation in Part 95 Section 1705. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Subpart ( a)( 2): " Any person that holds a valid individual license is eligible to obtain a renewed license, or a modified license to reflect a change of name or address. If the original license holder is deceased, he or she is no longer eligible to renew or modify. Subpart (b ): "Individual licensee responsibility. The holder of an individual license to operate GMRS stations is responsible at all times for the proper operation of the stations in compliance with all applicable rules in this part. If the individual license holder is deceased, he or she can no longer be "responsible at all times for the proper operation or compliance." Therefore, under the wording in Section 1705 as listed above, and other applicable licensee responsibilities that can not be fulfilled if the original licensee is deceased, the license most likely becomes void upon the licensee's passing and another family member would have to apply for an FRN as well as a NEW license and allow family members to operate under that NEW license. The FCC ULS Office can be reached initially by calling 1-888-CALL-FCC and then asking for the ULS Information Desk. Discuss the situation with the agent and they will be able to give information about proper FCC procedures in this case.
