  1. Some information in this old thread was based upon the old (pre April 2017) regulations. The new regulation wording allows simplex fixed location to fixed location operation on the 467 mains as long as the RF out of the radio antenna connector does not exceed 15 watts. The new Part 95 Fixed station regulations do not limit the type of antenna, antenna gain or ERP while using the 467 mains. Refer to 95.1763 ( c) for the new operational content, which does not restrict fixed to fixed operations on the 467 mains - as well as 95.1767 (a ) (2) for power requirements of fixed stations. Note FCC Part 95 Definition: "Fixed station. A station at a fixed location that directly communicates with other fixed stations only." *** Fixed stations operating on the 467 mains are not limited to repeater access only under the new rules ***
  2. ( Check 95.339 for additional specifications on this topic. )
  3. Your GMRS license is your authorization to own and operate a repeater. Monitoring all 462 and 467 main frequencies for awhile is a good idea to check to see if any channels may be in use for other repeaters.
  4. 95.1767 ( a) ( 1) - "The transmitter output power of mobile, repeater and base stations must not exceed 50 Watts." [ As measured with properly calibrated equipment at the output connector on the radio or repeater, operating on the 462/467 MAIN channels.]
  5. 5 AM Central Time, Saturday, January 26 - 14 degrees below zero with wind chill at 27 below zero. Colder at my Midwest location than in Fort Yukon, Alaska. Several years ago, the morning air temperature was 27 degrees below - a lady went out to her car to go to work, saw that one tire looked a little soft - kicked it and it 'broke'. It is so cold here that Scotsmen in the area are starting to wear pants. I tried to take the garbage out, but it didn't want to go. Pet stores here are starting to sell Penguins. Police told a robber to freeze - and he did. Mail delivery persons are watching out for dogs AND Polar Bears. It is so cold here that hitchhikers are holding up pictures of thumbs... Now, where did I put my golf clubs?
  6. There is some good info about that radio in another thread here in the forum. If that info doesn't answer all your questions, please let us know in this thread and we can take it from there... scroll down until you see the posts about the V1 - Click >>> https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/1312-good-2-way-repeater-ready-radio/
  7. Just a couple thoughts - you may have already considered these, but I'm including this for persons with TK-880 (8 pin mic) radios that may not be aware of this: Option 1: TheTK880 series has the Operator Selectable Tone set up menu available through the software 'edit' tab. Once you have the tones in place that you may need, then go to the "Key Assignments" drop down menu and assign the two arrow keys to the right of the "A" and "B" buttons to select the tones. Option 2: Go with an actual KMC 36 mic from Kenwood to solve the scan issue. Good luck...
  8. Just one quick search showed the following statement in Georgia Bill 673 which went into effect in July 2018 - - - "The hands-free law does NOT apply to the following electronic communication devices and the following devices can be used by the driver when on the road: radio, citizens band radio, citizens band radio hybrid, commercial two-way radio communication device or its functional equivalent, subscription-based emergency communication device, prescribed medical device, amateur or ham radio device, or in-vehicle security, navigation, or remote diagnostics system." Other states may have differing wording of their laws and should be researched individually.

  10. For those MyGMRS members who celebrate Christmas, from the staff at MyGMRS - A Very Merry Christmas.
  11. Just to add to what RCM mentioned - GMRS was not involved in the FCC Part 90 rebanding plan from a few years ago because it is a Part 95 service - not Part 90. Therefore 'wideband' operations on the MAIN channels listed in your post, is the normal operating mode for most licensed GMRS operators and for most repeater operations. Welcome to the Forum.
  12. In general terms, it is at the discretion of repeater system owners to list their equipment in any such web location that they choose and to maintain up to date details as posted in the various databases. Since it is the owner's responsibility to maintain up to date details or to remove any listings that are no longer active, the databases are only as good as the information the owners supply or delete.
  13. I can not address that question directly because I have no 'ham' radio experience. However, the Kenwood commercial radios are just that - designed for Part 90 and Part 95 Commercial use. That may answer your question. Keep us up to speed on your progress... and as with all used equipment, the transmitter should be tested 'officially' for frequency tolerance compliance before connecting to a broadcasting antenna. (Part 95.1765).
  14. Looks like you will also need the Kenwood KPG49D software. Really easy to use... Since it is a firmware 1.5, you may see an alert that it is not a software target radio. Disregard that alert and continue. Hint: when you get the software loaded, the radio connected to your new USB cable and the COMM PORT checked as active from the setup tab... hit the "MODEL" tab in the software menu screen. Click on "Model Information" and a drop down menu appears. Normal settings would be - Model Type: TK880 Frequency: 450 to 490 Radio Format: Conventional Option Board: none Fleet Sync Enhanced Function: (Important that this check box IS NOT CHECKED)
  15. Members of the Moderation Staff have noted the 'discussion' - we are leaving things intact as-is (for now) however, we trust that this disagreement or misunderstanding is now resolved and no further outbursts will be placed here. We must all remember that this Forum is made up of persons from all areas of the US and word usage and regional phrases may not be the same in all locations. Let's all be a bit more tolerant and understanding. We are all here to share and to learn and if there are any disagreements, please use the Private Messaging feature here in the Forum to calmly discuss any details that may be unclear between individuals. Thank you for your cooperation.
  16. I'll agree about Kenwood... Our Chaplain Response teams in 6 states use Kenwood exclusively. In the 12 years that we have used Kenwood equipment, we have never had a failure. Numerous TK880-1, TK-880H-1, TK863G mobiles (Part 90 and Part 95 certified) as well as TK-370 and TK380 portables - also Part 90 and Part 95 certified. We also have VHF licensed operations using TK-760 and TK-780 mobiles and TK-260G-1, TK-270 and TK-280 portables. All equipment listed above is easy to program for simplex or ALL types of repeater access and are wideband or narrowband as needed. Software and cables are available from many sources and the software works with operating systems up to Windows 10 (no DOS requirement for the models listed above).. I would also recommend the PCTEL mobile 5 db, center loaded NMO antennas - MUF4505 or the ASP76551.

  18. PROCEDURE: Click on your own name from the top right of the main forum page. A drop down menu appears. Click on "My Settings" and a settings page appears. From the LEFT side menu, click on "Email and Password" and an update page for resetting email and password appears. Under "EMAIL ADDRESS" - make your changes in the "New Email Address" block. Confirm the NEW email address in the second block and place your CURRENT password in the third block. BYPASS all other blocks on that page and hit the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of that screen. NOTE: You will have to CONFIRM the new email address by following the software prompts, so MAKE CERTAIN that your new email address is typed in correctly in both blocks - or you may be locked out. This procedure is common with 'IP BOARD' forum software. If this procedure does not work for you, send a PM to Rich to look into it for you - WQEJ577 https://forums.mygmrs.com/user/1-wqej577/ IF you do have any OTHER issues with this process, go to the main repeater listing site and hit the CONTACT button to have Rich reset things for you. The Moderator staff at MyGMRS has no administrative access. Main Site: https://mygmrs.com/ `
  19. We hope that the various manufacturer marketing departments, who read MyGMRS postings as guests, take seriously what is being discussed and consider making the equipment that they are producing, more licensed operator friendly rather than limiting the functionality of their products.
  20. We hope that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving holiday. Please use caution if you are traveling - especially in areas of the US that are seeing abnormally cold temperatures and freezing precipitation. Have a good day and be safe. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The MyGMRS Moderator Staff
  21. Side Note: Our MyGMRS Moderator (spd641) has a system in Blount County that seems to have coverage from just north of Birmingham to around Hartselle along I-65. Not sure of the east-west coverage.
  22. FYI - That would be a project for Rich - if he could find the time to assist. The Mod Staff at MyGMRS will not be involved in any type of legal or procedural advisories due to individual liability issues.
  23. While AM / SSB are listed in the Rules as being acceptable, there is no practical use for them regarding GMRS operations. If anyone has had an AM CB radio on in a car in the past 5 years or so and heard the 'white noise' generated by the "new and improved" LED traffic signal lights, the noise all but cancels out any signals inbound that you might wish to listen to. The other noise sources these days that affect AM /SSB are many and getting worse each year. Noise blankers and ANL's help some, but I don't believe that any manufacturer would develop a GMRS certified radio, which included AM / SSB, with the background noise as it is these days. Also, if the signal is strong enough, AM / SSB at any frequency may occasioanlly demodulate in home electronics equipment, such as stereo systems and computer speaker systems, causing hard feelings with neighbors.
  24. Interesting question. The Mod staff will let Rich know that there is an inquiry waiting here... Thanks for the post.
