  1. Well, your county maybe. That is one fine and professionally built repeater Cory is building!
  2. Also, you can miss the few math questions and still pass the exam...
  3. They are as scarce as hen's teeth these days, but if you can find one the MAHA MH-A302 Docking Booster Power Amplifier is just dandy for HT's. 144/440 MHz Input 1-5 watts Output 30 watts FM Mode only 13.8 volt I bought mine about 13 years ago to go with my ADI AT-600 2m/70cm HT (which has now died an honorable death after years of yeoman service). I now use it to power and boost one of my UV-5Rv2+ HTs. http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/9L8AAOSwHnFVlJgx/$_1.JPG
  4. I wish I had a nice tower for my future repeater. Alas, I'm stuck with a tripod roof mounted antenna at about 42'. It still should be good enough to cover the roughly 10 mile radius I need for now.
  5. You can get the KPG-29D software here where I got my copy: https://hamfiles.co.uk/index.php?page=start Yes, removing the jumper or zero ohm resistor from the back of the front panel and enabling the FPP feature via the software works great! BTW, the -1 indicates that it does have the bands for ham and GMRS use...
  6. There is very little math for the Tech license...
  7. I'd start with http://www.repeater-builder.com/rbtip/index.html On-line service manual: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/86728/Kenwood-Tk-8180.html
  8. Repeaters typically have a few seconds of "hang time" meaning that if you do manage to get in ("kerchunk"), when you release the PTT button you will hear a soft "rushing noise" before the repeater drops the carrier. Please, do not "kerchunk" the repeater without giving your call sign. It's not only a violation of the FCC rules, it's really annoying to the repeater's owner and just rude...
  9. Happy New Year to everyone here (all four of you or so it seems)...
  10. Baofeng UV5R v2+ can be easily programmed for GMRS. Currently < $40 USD. Well, pretty much any of the Baofeng/Pofung portables with keypad may be used.
  11. I don't use Twitter. For that matter I'm not all that interested in "social media" such as Facebook, even though I've had my page for years.
  12. Not too useful for GMRS with a transmit range of only 430-450 MHz.
  13. You need only announce your call sign on the first transmission, then every 15 minutes during the conversation. Normally I will end the conversation with my call sign as well. To simply announce your presence, say something like "WQWU626 monitoring."
  14. Oops! I've edited my reply above to reflect the correct information. Sorry about that!
  15. Check carefully to make certain that it is the version that operates in the 380-470 MHz band. There were four versions produced for different bands of operation. EDIT: I was mistaken about the availability of the CPS for this radio. All the more reason to look for older unsupported radios then. That's why I recently bought two CDM 1550 LS for a new GMRS repeater buildout.
  16. That is precisely why I have both ham and GMRS licenses!
