Over use of call sign announcements on GMRS

I've never heard the likes of such behavior. No ID. Well. How uncivilized. I bet they use DCS tones too. What has this world come to?!?!?!?! -

Does Power Output Matter? (Hint: NO!)
73blazer replied to OffRoaderX's question in Technical Discussion
In most cases I would agree. There are cases where it definitely helps however and I have tested this personally with many different radios. The case I'm talking about is heavy rolling forest, which just happens to be where I live and also where I hunt, hike, camp....I'm not talking a few trees sprinkled around some suburban homes, or a line of trees flanked by fields/open areas, or a lightly forested park, forest, real dense ~70' canopy height forest, many square miles of it. . All the 3-4w radios, even some Kenwood and Yeasu, Btech, baeofang, you name it..., won't do more than 1/2-3/4mi mabey 1mi if your lucky in this condition on 70cm/GMRS/UHF even with a 771G on them. . While the 5.5w 935g or 5w 905G, does~ 1.5mi with perfect clarity, a little more with a 771G, or with stock antenna with some light static. An 10W retivus RT29 (real output on GMRS 16 was 7.2w) did the 1.5mi or a little more, but it's audio quality even when only 100 yards away in open field sucked so bad I didn't know how to qualify it. You've said this many times in here and on your videos, I doubt I'll change your mind, you kinda half acknowledged it however, as I recall in one older video I remember the words something like "may help with ....penetration....penetration" accompanied by a twisting forearm thru hand gesture, so you thought it may help at one point. My real world experience tells me certain what most may consider to be edge cases, it indeed helps. In most cases in most areas, yes, it doesn't matter much. -

The 905G is not CHIRP capable although the wouxun software works fine, but if you plan on getting more radios and wish to copy paste between, the CHIRP is your friend there. The 805 is CHIRP capable. .The cable you want is readily available almost anywhere, Amazon or buytwowayradios.com those will work with the 935,905,805 or almost any other radio or radio brand with a std k1 connector. I would suggest buying not from Amazon as Amazon is rife with crappy knockoffs of this type of equipment that uses perhaps questionable driver or just plain won't work. 805 is IP55, 905 is IP66, 935's are IP66. 55 means dust protected and can resist water jets. 66 means dust tite and can resist powerful water jets. I have a yeseau that is IP55 and I've dropped it in a stream, it was not affected. I've also had a 935 fall off my sxs in my back 40 and lay in a puddle for a month, been run over a few times before I found it, it was not affected at all. So anything IP55 or above would be just fine for heavy outdoor use in snow, rain. -

New to GMRS world looking for advise buying first radio

No experience with that radio. That is a HAM radio that appears to be capable of transmitting on GMRS (otherwise may be known as a SHTF radio). It has a boatload of features that cater to HAM's and are not readily understandable on how to use/configure or even what they are for novice radio users. To transmit on GMRS you would have to manually program all the regular GMRS channels/frequencies. (of course adhering to power limits etc for those channels, if you care about conforming to rules). All the GMRS rules/frequencies are baked in on a true GMRS radio. It is also not CHIRP capable which was one of your listed requirements. (Vero N76=Radioddity GA-5WB also not CHIRP capable) More is needed to recommend anything, but just throwing out Mabey a Wouxun KG-805G ? It's a good true GMRS radio, very easy to use. And mid-price range..CHIRP capable. I prefer the 905G as it has a bit better IP rating but it is not CHIRP capable. -

Well, all depends on what YOU want in a radio. I take it this is a handheld given your previous '2 pack' purchase, as mobiles/bases are not usually sold in 2-packs. Waterproof/ruggedness? May be useful for hiking. Complex or simple interface? Lots of buttons or just simple channel display? Lots-o-buttons lets you program repeaters on the fly in the field. Simple is well...simple. Other listening bands like HAM/MARINE/MURS etc? SHTF capability/unlock (Tx on bands outside GMRS like HAM/MARINE/MURS etc)? GPS capable? Bluetooth/phone pairing capable? FM Radio capable? NOAA alerts NOAA weather channels USB C Chargable as opposed to cradle only charging emergency light? ...etc..etc..etc.... and the list goes on But I second @SteveShannon 's mention of watching some reviews, notarubicon on youtube ( @OffRoaderX here ) has reviewed every GMRS among a few other radios out there. -
One can place a budget on radio equipment?

I personally have experienced this "incompatibility" if you can call it that. They were with Midland GMRS GXT740 radios, probably 2012ish manufactured. While they communicated with the other GMRS radios in our group, the audio sounded...bad...low and more background noise....on both TX and RX when communicating with any other branded GMRS radios (meaning I sounded bad to others using non-midland radios and they sounded bad to me on my Midland) Midland to Midland was fine. Yes, they are now old and they still sound bad when comm'ing with my Wouxuns or Kenwood

You should have used their rubber ducks for target practice.

Most people with GMRS radios have no clue they even need a license as most GMRS radios only mention it, if they mention it at all, in a footnote in the user manual which 99% of people just roundfile along with the packaging. I know people with business radios that don't know they need a license. They just bought a couple of radios off amazon with no idea what they were. They looked simple no display or keypad, just 8 channels. Granted they operate a cabin resort in the middle of nowhere so nobody is going to care.

For those that don’t think the FCC will enforce anything.

I can ask my wife to stop hitting cars in parking lots, but she doesn't need to respond or stop doing it. So, I guess I don't consider asking you to stop an "enforcement action" . But yes, your right, he was issued an NOUO (notice of unlicensed operation) asking him to stop. Before that he was left a notice of interference on his car windshield by the agent. And has a history of this type of action, which he did nothing about and never paid the fine in that case either. -

73blazer replied to warthog74's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
The current FCC enforcement process is they issue a initial notice called an NAL (notice of apparent liability) which lists what you've done wrong and usually includes a proposed, proposed, penalty (called a proposed forfeiture) which is usually a fine but could be take your crap down, stop doing something or hand over your equipment, but all proposed. The target can contest the issue or do nothing, if the target does nothing, the FCC can issue a Forfeiture notice which is in the form of 'you need to pay the fine listed' or hand over your stuff or stop doing whatever your doing or whatever they had decreed . The target can continue to do nothing, and all the FCC can do at that point is turn it over to the DOJ for "collection" which must happen thru a US district court. This usually takes the form of the DOJ issues a pay up notice you appear before a judge and come to an agreement. In rare cases, usually involving big companies, like AT&T, Comcast...etc...you can opt for a jury trial. In the majority of the notices turned over to the DOJ from the FCC, the DOJ does nothing due to lack of resources. They usually only go after the big boy companies or big dollar fines so they can make an example/get news coverage and hopefully detour others. In the case of the original posters PDF, that is a forfeiture order, so after Leon got his NAL, which it says was May30th, 2023, so 2 years ago, and did nothing. And will probably continue to do nothing. The FCC's order says Leon needs to pay up within 30 days, the reality is, they will probably wait 2 years, turn it over to the DOJ, and nothing will happen. -
Either works, but CHIRP is much simpler. In Extra Settings->Frequency Limits match the TX to the RX and .... you have a full SHTF radio, including MURS & GMRS among others, but as others mention, it's now up to you to be compliant with the rules/power limits etc.
-
Wrong on both counts. GMRS is for whatever you want it to be used for. HAM is for whatever you want it to be used for. There are plenty of HAM's who use HAM while off-roading or hiking. There are plenty of GMRS users "making contacts" especially through repeaters. Who cares what they use it for. It's there to be used, for whatever someone wants to use it for. If someone wants to use a log book regardless of service, why would you even care?!

Wouxun in the title...seems to be a trigger for him, was guaranteed a negative response from him.
