So anyone who offers a positive opinion of Midland products is getting paid off? I’ve got a couple Midland’s and they work great, so can you please call them and expedite my check? I think you need to take two steps back and read what you’ve said. Maybe this place isn’t a good fit for you….

You’ll get lots of replies with ideas and advice, but do yourself a favor and spend some time watching YouTube videos and reviews. This will give you far more “pros & cons” and you’ll actually see the items. Our own Randy has a great channel, with great reviews, and he’s entertaining as a bonus. You’re entitled to your opinion, as am I. I think guys who keep keying up over and over, holding the air for 10-15 seconds of nothing but giggles, farts, or music, and each time cycling through their Roger beeps are just being assclowns. Has nothing to do with “some people” or sad hams, it’s just the basic rule of life - “don’t be a dick”. If that’s lost on you it’s ok.

If you do take the radio, be sure you wear it on your belt.

It seems that is the same mindset of the clowns who keep kerchunking the local repeater and demonstrating their many different Roger beeps.

In the Toyota 4Runner: * Midland MTX575 * Until today I had the Midland “Ghost” 3db antenna mounted in the rear roof, but today I swapped it for the Larsen puck style NMO, which is shorter and seems to actually perform better here in the mountains. Model LP450NMO In my son’s Jeep JK (next weekend) * Midland MTX275 * Pulse-Larsen LP450NMO - mounted to the top of the central speaker bar. It will clear both hard & soft tops and work fine. Handhelds: I picked up the KG-UV9GX, but haven’t programmed it yet. It’s wearing the Smiley Slim Duck antenna We have maybe six or seven Baofeng UV-9G radios and the gang charger. A couple wear Smiley Slim Duck antennas, the rest have Nagoya 701 or 771.

Out here east of Seattle there is a “net” (Annette?) that does social group comms once a week in the early evening. Another night they do a Ham license study group net, to help those interested in getting that license. Seems nice. I do hear the Whisky Foxtrot Zulu nonsense at times, in addition to the occasional jerkoff who needs to play music or make random stupid comments. There also seem to be many wanna-be first responders who feel it necessary to come on to tell us that “WXYZ123 is on the air and monitoring.” I guess they are waiting for dispatch to send them to a call. Thanks for the info. I run the similar Midland “Ghost” on the roof of my 4Runner with great results in the mountainous PNW. I’m hitting the repeaters well. The antennas you and I have will work with his soft top, but not the hard top, which is why the puck. Mostly it’ll be car to car and repeater use for us too. I’m considering pulling my MIdland 575 out of the Toyota and installing the Wouxun 1000 plus unit, then putting the Midland in the Jeep. We shall see how it all works out.

I plan to install a Midland mobile in my son’s Jeep JK and recently found this Jeep owner who installed a Larsen pick antenna to the metal speaker bar overhead. It apparently has no issues with hard or soft tops and should perform similar to the Midland “ghost” 3db antenna. We like that it’ll be an easy install and hidden.

I agree with SShannon that terrain is the main factor. This said, I have the 771G Nagoya antennas on a couple handhelds and it’s shorter siblings on a couple others. I also have the Smiley Slim Duck on two and generally find it performs better than the stock antenna or shorter Nagoya, but about the same as the 771G. I prefer the Smiley.

Maybe I’m slow, but if you chose a less used tone and don’t publish it, potential unauthorized users would have to try each possible tone combination to get access.

I don’t recall CB having any “official” channels except 9 for emergencies. People just started using 17 & 19 for “road comms” and it stuck. Of course, we didn’t have cell phones back in the 70’s either. No amount of discussion on any Internet forum is going to establish anything resembling an official or unofficial travel channel. Heck, with cell phones everywhere the use of GMRS is pretty much down to us radio dorks, outdoor enthusiasts, and off road folks. I think scanning and calling where one hears activity is about the best you can hope for.
